  • bozzio is a joke

  • @elnino482 If bozzio was such a joke. Frank Zappa wouldnt have put him in his band. You had to be top notch to be in Zappa's band. He is the original drummer to play The Black Page #1. that is a very hard piece to play. almost impossible.

  • @EeeAreEyeKay he sounded good for zappa, but for some reason everything else just sucks...

  • @elnino482 No it doesnt. His music is just too complex for the simple minded. You have to have an IQ to understand it.

  • Bozzio can groove mon

  • Danny. And just for fun: watch?v=x0GhbFqIQCo

  • Both are great. And different. I wouldnt call one a better talent than the other at all. Bozzio has crazy control, and Carey is just a machine.

  • danny carey is a god

  • DANNY CAREY FTW!!!!!

  • Both are incredibly talented drummers and are far better than I'll ever be, but my vote goes to DC, his calculated time signatures and astounding polyrhythms have made him a favourite of mine for years now. Drumming perfection imo.

  • and these arent even the best clips of Danny

  • SOrry but danny is blows terry away.. do you hear terry use such rolls with music he plays along with.. NO!!!! sure terry can solo but your stupid if you say terry is better than Danny!! no way!! lets match em up in the ring!!

  • Lol i love reading these comments. everyone is so willing to compromise and agree to disagree. not like guitarist debates. those debates get a little rowdy.

  • Terry Bozzio leaves Carey in the dust as far as technical proficiency but who cares, I listen to both of them regularly and love what they both do.

  • My favourite personally is Danny. But honestly, who cares. Terry "The Great" Bozzio is what it says. To say that any of these amazing drummers is "worse" than anyone else is foolish

  • Comment removed

  • Both are amazing just different styles. You can't judge who is better it's impossible!

  • honestly who gives a shit, they're both great drummers and they've both got different styles all together, not to mention the fact that bozzio has been playing 15 years longer than danny. stop comparing, start appreciating

  • At 1:55 who was like OH SHIT IT's KORN!!!

  • Unless you are blind and deaf it is unmistakeable that Danny can play circles around Bozzio. Bozzio is a great drummer but lets be real! It isn't even a competition.

  • Im sry i cant choose, both influenced me in so many ways

  • DANNY IS THE ONLY AND THE BEST! NO MORE WORDS!

  • There is nothing...and mean nothing remotely innovative or intricate in Carey's playing.

Bozzio's musicianship and rhythmic interpolations are far superior.

I saw Bozzio w/ Jeff Beck sometime ago. Incendiary!

    Bozzio...hands down.

  • Terry Bozzio clearly playing with three major bands, Zappa, Missing Persons, Korn, all with different styles, impressed me the most. Terry uses everything and makes it sound so good.

  • i bet everyone of you probably think Neil Peart is probably better than both of them too

  • or listen to the black page and then look it up on google or something, terry is playing this note by note, danney carrey does jam and tool is way bad ass but as far as drummers it is like comparing a drum god to a better than average rock drummer come on guys, really

  • @MrShadybeats better than average rock drummer? danny carey is most definitely much more than just that

  • hahahahahahahaha, I hate to sound rude, but danny carrey isnt that good,... at all ive been playing drums for about 14 years now and terry bozzio is so beyond carrey it is astounding listen to bozzio levin stevens, frank zappa, brecker brothers danny carrey probably cant even read music

  • DANNY FTW!!!

  • Danny Carey!

  • Carey, no doubt about it.

  • like i have to be as calm about this camparison as a can,... daney is, well better than terry by a wide margin in every way

  • I really enjoy watching Terry Bozzio. He has great speed & energy and almost looks effortless when he is drumming, & his stage presence is excellent. I also enjoy watching Danny Carey, as he also has great stage presence, technique & more power in his drumming, He is also cuter :)

Perhaps, having videos with just their drum solos only so their skills are featured individually & only?

  • Danny Carey is the "Chuck Norris" of Drums. No way.

  • danny carey duh only cause i agree 100% with element00257"s comment

  • Carey

  • Terry is a great drummer, but for me, Danny is better, most technical in Tool's song ! Vote to Danny.

  • worst choice of video ever.... i have seen terry do everything danny did and better... and now he plays the largest set which is also a chromatically tuned drumset which danny doesnt have the ability to do... if you wanna see what a drummer is really made of you dont look at his ability in a band setting anyways you look at the creativeness outside the band setting or "solos" because in a band setting anyone can learn to do what is done by the drummer (assuming you have any skills at drumming)

  • tomas haake. each of his limbs has a brain. i hear his penis what connects all these brains together.

  • I think Danny is the better of the two. Terry is an excellent drummer, but he justs plays. When Danny performs, he takes the drums and puts his voice into them.

  • danny carey for sure.

  • im no drummer, danny sounds better. i think terry may be technically better but it seems that its just that terry switches timing too drastically. my vote be danny

  • I prefer Mike Patton

  • i love tool but check out "terry bozzio - awesome groove". chould answer any questions.

  • DANNNNNNY CARRRREYYY IS WAYYYY BETTTTTERRRRR

  • @x4aperfecttool Danny for sure. Those symbals are begging for mercy.

  • when i listen to tool, i can hear the thought and detail gone into each new rhythm and beat, danny is as much a percussionist as he is a drummer. a very standout example of his talent and creative odd timed drumming pieces is The Grudge as a whole, and of course the 46&2 solo. danny carey is my favourite drummer of all time and an inspiration, he gets my vote!

  • Danny is way better!!! Danny Carey has some of the most strange time signatures in the world.

  • Danny hands down!

  • Danny wouldn't be the drummer that he is without the influence of great drummers such as Bozzio. However, Danny's drumming carries so much more weight/feeling/substance behind it. He's just a better drummer all around than Bozzio ever was. And, that's not a bad thing.. He just took it, and evolved to the next level.

  • Danny... ALL THE WAY!!!!!

  • as a drummer i have respect for both artists, but in the purest form, Danny can do everything that Bozzio did, and then some, he is just the better drummer

  • @element00257 Agreed, skill trumps speed any day!

  • @element00257 No offence...and i mean it....but you really dont know what you're talking about. Because they play very different styles, there is no way for you or anyone to be able to comment about who is better. Its like trying to compare Paco Sery with Ian Paice. I like Danny better - but even though i've played for 13 years, i cant compare an apple to an orange cause thats just stupid.

  • Danny carey is simply the most talented drummer i have ever heard. If you listen to any tool song youll see that it is his drumming that is giving you those goosebumps

  • Very striking in styles & sets. Bozzio is complex in range with tuning adjustments & exotic rhythms coloring his work even when playing rock. Listen to hear that difference which makes him an original. His footwork is fantastic. Consider the variety of musicians he's collaborated with, listen to their pieces, & compare with anything else then you understand the demands. Although I am more familiar with Bozzio than Carey so it means I have more listening to do. Enjoy.

  • Carey is a dynamic swinger & that may limit him compared to Bozzio. While he also provides complexity it is rarely out of a certain zone that fits his particular signature. His music definitely inspires but he may play to his fans, the genre, or for the bands he is in at the time more than developing his own beat & sounds. It's like you get what is expected from him. I must give regard to other work than what is provided here because that may be an issue.

    Frankly, I like them both.

  • Dan Carey by miles!

  • Danny Carey is pure primitive savagery.

  • Danny Carey is the best I've ever heard. I've given other drummers a fair listen, and none seem to have his ability to play with power, speed, and mathematical precision and timing.

  • I love how danny actually uses all of his cymbals and makes awesome music with them alone. Doesn't need a dozen for flash....just sayin'...

  • danny carey is the shit!

  • Maybe it's unintentional, but I feel like this contest is rigged. None of the Bozzio clips show his best stuff, except maybe the second one. The first clip is a slowed down version of stuff he was blazing on earlier - slowed down for the sake of teaching. Look up "Terry Bozzio US Drag Solo" and tell me it's not bad-ass. Watch "City of Tiny Lights" or his solo from Zappa's '77 Baby Snakes concert. Danny Carey's great, but his fans should be open to his idols - like Terry.

  • @intuantu

Well said with excellent examples to regard. I love City of Tiny Lights.

  • @FranklinBlunt City of Tiny Lights is breathtaking from start to finish! I used to sing and play that in a band. Obviously, I had to simplify the drumming to do so!

  • @intuantu None of the Danny clips show his best. Watch his live performance of triad and try to keep up with the polyrhythms going on. Its truly an amazing performance. Bozzio is a better session drummer, but Danny is who you want in your band. Both Phenomenal though.

  • @intuantu It's not rigged. They aren't Danny's best clips either.

  • @PoeticJustice05 Sorry, Danny's clips are more indicative of what he's about. Most of the clips of Terry are anything BUT showcases of his abilities. I'm pretty sure if Danny's fans told him he's better than Bozzio, his response would be along the lines of "Thanks, but what have you been smoking?" I know Danny idolizes Terry. Try to argue with this: Danny wouldn't be the drummer he is today without the influence of Terry. Just like Tony Williams, Eric Gravatt, Narada M. Walden influenced Terry.

  • @intuantu I never said he's better than Terry Bozzio, only that the clips of him are not his best. None of the clips showcase the myriad number of awesome polyrhythms he plays in lots of Tool songs. The clips either show him rocking out, which he also does magnificently, or at the end of a song. His best stuff are his polyrhythms and his tribal rhythms, that and his awesome ability to rock out with his cock out.

  • Terry Bozzio, more versatile and can master any style. That's my own personal opionion but both drummers are equally talented in their own way, I'll just lean toward Bozzio a little more.

  • This is my answer based on how I personally interpreted the question being asked by the person that posted this video. I think they are both incredibly untouchable, I personally prefer Danny for his more 'tribal' style because its easier to just 'lose yourself' to the music. But that doesn't mean he's better than Bozzio, just means he's better at playing what I want to hear.

I know you said to comment on the drummers only, but thank you for that terrific Tool footage, amazing audio.

  • Danny Carey hands down! No doubt what so ever! Bozzio is good but he can't touch Danny the untouchable! Carey ranks right along side Neil Peart, Vinnie Paul, and Mike Portnoy. This is no contest as far as this post goes!

  • @drumgod1972 Vinnie Paul isn't even close to Bozzio. Mangini is probably in my top 5 with Carey, Portnoy, Peart, and Marco Minneman.

  • danny carey

  • My vote goes to Danny.

  • It's not a hard decision; Danny Carey for sure!

  • Danny all the way

  • What's the name of the song Bozzio is performing with Fantomas?

  • carey for sure, bozzio has that snippet in there of a carey impression which made me laugh because he doesnt seem to have it in him to play using anything but 4/4

  • carey handsdown

  • Bozzio. If I had to pick one it would be Bozzio. Imagine you had to listen to one of these guys for the rest of your life. I'd rather listen to the Bozzio style. That said, I like Danny Carey too.

  • Sorry...Danny's chops have more clarity. Terry gets "classic" points, but Danny's playing is hands down MORE articulate, thus demonstrating less refinement of "tricks" that he can pull off like Terry.... and greater faculty of technique.

  • Terry is awesome!!!... I like him

  • Carry destroys Bono....

  • Terry used to be my fav for years, but Danny took his place! Love them both, and they are unique in their own way. You can tell... Oh... thats danny playing, or... oh thats bozzio! and thats what saparates a drummer from a guy who plays the drums.

  • I love Bozzio, but his single strokes on the bass in the beginning sounded like utter shit..there was no phrasing

  • Danny Carrey for certain. How can you deny a long lost Hanson Brother that obviously has giants blood in him

  • Danny carrey all the way!!!!! besides the fact that his style and licks are way better he can take his skills and incorporate them into the middle of tools music unlike bozzio who could only produce crazy technical compositions in a solo setting

  • Love them both, but I'd have to vote for Carey. I could listen to an entire album of him just playing drums

  • Danney Carey and those African polyrythms HAHA

  • Comment removed

  • danny is god

  • i can´t choose :S

  • Danny Carey!

  • He was with Zappa... if Zappa thought he was good enough then I am going with Terry on this one

  • The are both amazing. Both can play all kids of wicked shit in crazy time signatures in clinics, but only Carey can incorperate that same kind of musicality and rythemic creativity into actual songs...and not just as a free-time solos, but directly into the groove of the song.

  • you know, to say that one drummer can do something the other can't, is a little naive. Both are distinguished players at the top of their game.

Different Styles? Yea. Like both styles for what they are...but from a technical standpoint, who can say from a few minutes of video who the most skilled drummer is? You can't...Both have pushed the limits of technique, and the above video hardly scratches the surface of what each can do.

My vote: Both are insanely good.

  • sorry but danny is the best and there is no one out there to beat him

  • bozzio is better for technicality, carey is just god though.

  • Kinda wished you woulda put The intro and a little farther in for Ticks and leeches by Tool. That song just blows my fucking mind on drums. Danny Carey for sure

  • danny boy!!!!!!

  • Only a few get to this level of self expression, technical ability while creating a unique voice. We should all work this hard!

  • lol carey takes the cake.

  • They're both incredible!!!!!

  • I used to have the DCI video of Terry Bozzio that this was taken from. It had a booklet with it. Very cool.

  • danny ftw

  • Bozzio is good but Danny ATTACKS the drum set totally differently...style. Danny gets my vote.

  • Danny Carey = Today. Terry Bozzio = Yesteryears. They are both great drummers, but the times have changed and so have people's perceptions of constitutes a great drummer. Apples to Oranges comparison here.

  • DANNey

  • hard to say..both amazing and more so important to the evolution to music...it doesnt matter whos better but carey is more pleasing to the ear ..at least he clicks more with my brain than bozzio but rsect all around...dont argue just enjoy drumming finest

  • there is no contest

    danney carey

  • Bozzio has so many more years of experience!

  • Danny Carey almost > Buddy Rich..... almost, but besides that. He is the best.

  • Apples and Oranges...

  • Danny!

  • Fuck em both, Keith Moon was the best...ever.

  • @shippinsteeldeluxe has just proved that there is no space in this post his comments. That is like saying Darwin did very little to contribute to modern science. Bozzio and Carey are a very close match. I would score it like this: Bozzio 1 - Carey 1.618.

  • DC = most over rated drummer of the last 20 years. Tim Alexander anyone?

  • @shippinsteeldeluxe lmao did u actually just say that? lmao its funny Danny Carey is in a band named tool i think its fair to call you a total fucking Tool. but nice try trying to convince us hes overrated...let alone the most overrated drummer of the last 20 years.....i guess guys like Lars Ulrich and Joey Jordison ring a bell? fucking moron. god i hate stupid people.

  • @godofwar5 neither, as mentioned in above post. I love how upset tool fans get upset when you tell them you're not a fan of the band. I used to like them but it got too predictable and boring.

My fave drummers include Bozzio, Chris Pennie, Tim Alexander, Brian Mantia, Tomas Haake (meshuggah who Tool tried to emulate), Gene Hoglan and more.

I think Danny Carey is good but really not as good as everyone thinks, perhaps people should listen to other bands... perhaps

  • @shippinsteeldeluxe ur really stupid actually:S and dont talk to me about listening to other bands. cause i can name a million great drummers from tons of bands who are great drummers. not to mention a shit ton of real drummers like Jazz drummers. Danny is extrememly creative, when he plays drums u know hes playing just by listening. he has a destinct style hes not just a drummer hes unbelieveable. i can understand opinion but to call him the most overrated drummer of the last 20 years? stupid.

  • @godofwar5 apologies for slight typo at the beginning, I'm sure you get the gist of it

  • @godofwar5 see how upset tool fan boys get? Its hilarious. Maybe you should kiss him on the lips?

I met DC a few weeks ago at a grindermen gig, he was a nice guy and signed my gf's viola. Still overrated though. OK he may not be the MOST over rated drummer in the last 20 years but he's overrated

  • @shippinsteeldeluxe getting mad and laughing at morons are 2 different things :) obviously 1 guy outta 605,000 that viewed this video think hes "overrated" Danny Carey ftw :)

  • @godofwar5 I didn't say you were mad, I said you were upset. Upset because someone doesn't share your opinion, you must be a great conversationalist.

  • @shippinsteeldeluxe Now, I am a HUGE Tool fan, but Danny isn't the greatest drummer. I would say he was the greatest modern drummer, though. If we're talking all time, I would say Buddy Rich or Bonham.

  • Well, considering Danny Carey is the best rock drummer alive today, I am going to have to go with him.

  • DC. Hands down.

  • danny carey all the way!!!!!!!

  • I prefer Bozzio.

  • stupid question carey all the way

  • uhm... danny... any other brain busters..

  • Danny Carey is far more creative. Terry Bozzio just repeats rudiments he's learned years ago. Both are brilliant drummers. Tool is a better band than anything Bozzio has ever been in. Including Korn.

  • I vote for Jim Carrey. He is sooo funny.

  • both are great; Terry has more range, variety and experience. There are so many great drummers out there: Kirk Covington(tribal tech), Vinnie C, Dave Weckl ...... etc..

  • Danny, he hits too hard for any one to follow, could you imagine being one of the tom faces after a concert, ice for weeks.

  • I'm a drummer at age 15. been playing for 6 years now this summer. I must say, that playing Tool songs the last 8 (ca.) months of my life has GREAAATLY increased my drumming style compared to ANYTING else. and i've played alot of different shit xD

Danny is my picture of how i want to play.

  • Danny.

  • Danny Carey is the answer.. you stupid rat niggers.

  • really ... its a Question ?? Danny

  • terry bozzio!!!!!

  • Danny Carey without a doubt.

  • Danny allll the way. His drumming is just. completely out of this world. =)

  • vote danny

  • 2:45 Mike Patton!! Yeah!!

  • D Carey is so good. I probably sound too much like him because I listen to Tool so much. Oh well, there are few drummers with a better sound to emulate.

  • Terry is absolutely amazing in his style, no doubts about that...but I am bias...I love Danny's style. It is my favority

  • Fuck... I say BOTH.

  • Sorry Danny learned alot from terry so i say terry is better. Anyone who can play the black page has my solute

  • Added to favorites.

  • These are two of my favorite drummers of all time... I'm going to name my first born Terry Carey...

  • I have the highest respect for Bozzio and everything he's accomplished on the drumset and in terms of bringing a whole new light to percussion. But in terms of raw kick ass-ness.....it's Carey all the way!

  • danny all the motherfucking way

  • Danny carey

  • watch the extended version of stinkfist. awesome

  • then put in dana carvey

  • I get the feeling that Danny could use an upside down five gallon bucket and a spatula and still beat Terry with his surround sound of a drum kit.

  • they are both great drummers, styles arent all that different either, but Danny Carey has, is and always will be my favorite drummer ever, wish hed come play for my band!!!

  • Different styles and different generations. They are both great drummers! End of discussion!

  • Terry was a sick ass drummer but damn Carey is just the fucking king...even neil peart has said he is fukin sick

  • no one can even touch carey

  • My vote.....Nicko McBrain!

  • Whats that weird hi hat electronic trigger thing at 2:07?

  • My vote is for John Bonham.

  • Terry Bozzio thinks he's cool because he has a drum set that he uses only 30% of. He thinks that playing fast makes you superior, however Danny is the fucking shit and his placement is just amazing. It's not about how many notes you play, but what notes you play.

  • the best of the best bands and the crux of time keepers both bands are out of the scope we call time n relativity! i could not answer if i had to choose which bands cd would i choose to only listen to the rest of my time left alive....after doing time in solitary confinement for 6 mnths i found myself euphorically hitting the play button to both tool @ Master Frank Zappa

  • When Neil Peart goes to church he goes to Danny Carey worship cathedral. Danny is not only THE BEST drummer ever, he is also a genuinely good human being.

  • This is the first time I've ever heard Terry play, and I gotta say, I'm really impressed. He's a great drummer, but despite that, Danny is still #1 in my heart. He's the reason I started learning drums, and I'll always be a big fan of his because of that.

That and the fact that he's a straight up amazing drummer.
