This was THE song from a great album. Phyllis Hyman, Norman Connors and Pharoah Sanders were remarkable. Phyllis never received the recognition she should have for such an emotional voice. Truly, the world overlooked a fantastic musician. Hope people today are enjoying their Lady Gaga. Fabulous post.
I'll never forget early 1980's / summertime Fire Island Pines N.Y. / you, arriving via helicopter, landing on the ocean side of The Pines in the sand, almost midnight between Harbor Walk & Atlantic Walk looking "MAGNIFICENT" in a white beaded gown after a Broadway performance of "Sophisticated Ladies" to do a benefit at our summer playground, "The Pavillion" :-)
With songs like this.... one can with their imagination, build a temple to love and make a dwelling place out of it indeed! Thanks to Phyllis Hyman and Pharoah Saunders for making such beautiful music together.
Can anyone tell me what the name of that subtle instrument is that plays softly in the back ground throughout the song? It can be heard at the 0:02 and 0:05 mark. I've been trying to figure it out fir the longest and I love its sound.
If you are looking for this CD, I went to CD Universe.com and the name of the CD is Love will find a way. Beautiful CD, Bought it when it was an LP, Very happy with it..
i loved this sista . her music always make me feel sad but in a good way . pharoah has a spiritual feeling to it like you are flying to the heavens. i cant explain it.
HEY Mrhoward it still bothers me....I still throw-up with young people try to play Lil Kim in the Cafe after work, so I don't go after work until they get a better music so now at this holiday time since Thanksgive the music after work has been more adult, so we all have have a sandwich and some good Black music that doesn't insult you as a Black person
DAMN am still hurtng, I heard this song as a young man and I met the sister a few months latr back in 79-80, she was fine, but she was a cool and happy Cousin, she was always funny and giving....But she had alway a base player but we was always cool. DAMN this too many memories
I ve never hearing this great black woman, her voice is stupend, the most great,is really that i could relaxing, also enjoying and deleiting with this voice,i love her,is the best that i never i couls hearing,is too bad that she is not here in the earth, however i feel good.
I tried finding this on I-Tunes, but I couldn't. Guess I will have to find the actual Pharoah Sanders album and get it. I love this song...it is so beautiful.
It's on Phyllis Hyman's One on One CD...A beautiful CD in it's entirety...Everytime I hear this song it just pulls at my heart...her voice is...well...just heavenly...I miss her so much...
Yeah, Pharoah Sanders played with the extraordinary master of the tenor sax - John Coltrane. Pharoah's playing and music is so underrated and misunderstood to this day. He should be considered one of the greats.
Thanks, Pharoah took the direction of his music and note structuring toward African and the East. That's where Coltrane had and was going before his untimely death.
As soon as Phyllis started singing all I could do was cry! We all need to be the formation of people that shoes love to people because we never know what people are going through.
MAY THE LORD ABOVE BLESS PHYLLIS HYMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Divine Ms. Phyllis Hyman...What can I say...She is truly missed. Everytime I hear a song from her sadness fills my heart, for I will never see her perform live. For many years after her suicide, I was angry. I am no longer angry and have come to love and appreciate the legacy she has left us. Timeless sound and beauty.
I still remember when I found out I were sitting on the edge of the bed watching channel 9 news. They said the show at the Apollo had been cancelled because PH had committed suicide, my mouth dropped. I flung the door open and yelled it out to my mom who is the BIGGEST PH fan, she looked at me strange ran to the TV and damn near fainted. For whatever reason she ran out to the pay phone called my aunts whom all where at my grandmothers because they had just heard the news. TBC
The first thing my great grandmother said to my mom was Brenda are you okay and my mom just broke down. My mom and aunts NEVER missed a PH or Whispers concert and for what ever reason they didn't attend that one. I have listened to this woman sing ALL my life, she's been making music longer than I've been alive and I'm 34. There will NEVER be another Phyllis Hyman.
The weird thing is, my sons last name is Hyman. There aren't many Blacks with the last name and I would find the one with it lol.
This is a real gem, no really -a gem. To me, spiritually, emotionally, it's worth more than any value a stone or a rock could ever bring.

I still simply can't believe that she died thinking for one minute that people did not appreciate both her and her work. It is too sad really.
