anyone else besides me think that had Elizabeth been older and around Mary's age he would have Elizabeth delcare her mother not the queen and also admit that she was bastard?
@NicolaWriter It isn't interesting at all. He had no reason to doubt Mary's paternity. He got rid of Katherine because she didn't have a boy, there was never any allegations of adultery against Katherine. He got rid of Anne by accusing her of adultery. So it kind of fits for him also to allege that Elizabeth wasnt' his.
There's nothing to suggest Henry ever thought Elizabeth wasn't his daughter-- as Alison Weir points out, he would certainly not have restored her to the succession in 1544 if he had had any doubts about her paternity.
@sidwellian2012 Wasn't there nothing to doubt in that area because they shared so many features? The only reason she was demoted to Lady was because she was declared a bastard, wasn't she?
@balletslippers91 yes she was demoted to the title of Lady after she was declared illigitimate just like Mary befor her. And yes they shared many features Elizabeth had her mothers figure eyes and hands but her hair was Henrys and so was personality!
@sidwellian2012 he may have had doubts initially but as he would have heard and saw as Elizabeth grew up i think he would have become convinced that she was his
I think the only reason he called Anne a whore because he was hurt when he heard the accusations towards her; commiting adultery, incest and all the crazy drama that happened previously through the end of season 2.
Nonetheless there is no reason to take it out on your daughter bu refusing her purchase of nessceties Henry.... WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS YOU???
Actully Elisibeth was worse then Mary. Elisibeth had more then double the amount killed in her reign then in Marys reign. Elisibeth was just sneaky and didnt go after one group of people. She just went after everyone,
@SummerLovinOX And on top of that she turned on Mary. After Mary had done so much to help her. She may have been a good queen but I don't think she was a good person. She was just like her mother. She only thought of herself.
@SummerLovinOX if Elizabeth was so bad as you say then why weren't there multiple assassination attempts on her life? Why didn't the people overthrow her? I guess she was lucky to have reigned for 45 years...
@cjcheri the majority of the attempts on Elizabeths life were from Catholics who disputed Elizabeths right to rule because they regarded her as being the product of Henrys "illegal" marriage to Anne Boleyn and therefor illigitimate! To the catholics Anne Boleyn was the antichrist and her daughter was regarded as the same!
How dare Henry deny his daughter. If only he could glimpse the future: That Elizabeth would be more beloved and esteemed by her people and diplomats than Mary was, that Elizabeth looked more like Henry than Mary ever did, and it was the "whore's" daughter who is widely considered England's greatest monarch ever.
Historically, I don't think Henry ever denied being Elizabeth's father. I believe it was during the reign of Mary that questions were raised about her parentage. What BS, though; she's the most like him out of all of his children, and yet she's not his daughter. Yeah, RIGHT...
okey, Henry, if Elizabeth isn't your child than you've got only the sick and weak boy, who died at the age of 15 and "bloody Mary"... No problem, your's choise =_=
hell yes maybe he turns in his grave because he knows Elizabeth became a great Queen, though he treated her and her gracious mother like pieces of trash
i think its really ironic that he denies Elizabeth as his child, and she becomes the greatest monarch england has ever seen... just goes to show what a bad king, leader, and father he was
From what I've read (and yes, that's my disclaimer-they were history book,s but you never know) Henry treated his daughters as well as his son. He may have been a lousy husband but it appears he was a decent father. MARY was actually the odd "man" out b/c she was so much older than the other two (not b/c she was Catholic) it was Elizabeth and Edward that grew up together.
That is so wrong that Henry says that about Elizabeth. God what a f*&^ bastard !!. It is not Elizabeth's fault that she was born and it is HIS fault and HIS foolishness that he married Anne Boleyn and executed her now he denies even his own flesh and blood? That is fucked up.
@MsMixis Without Anne's "marriage" to the king the country could have STAYED Catholic ,and that would've been the best that could've happened to England...
Well, compared to people like Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Imapler and Elizabeth Bathory, Henry VIII and Mary Tudor are saints. I never thought that Mary I was an evil queen, just greatly misunderstood and horrible wronged by so many people.
well... He did at some stage bastard his two daughters and elizabeth and Mary were very close. Edward I reckon wasn't that close with elizabeth because he didn't pass the thrown to her. he gave it to Jane grey. So i don't know bout that. But yes he was a lousy husband.
The only reason why the crown was passed to Jane was because she was protestant. Plus, her family wanted power. The crown was supposed to go to Mary if Edward died without children. But then Mary raised an army, and then she became queen. But then Mary died without an heir and so Elizabeth became queen.
Historically, Jane didn't actually do all that much for Elizabeth. Her sole interest was Mary because she was Catholic and the daughter of Queen Katherine and she regarded her as a Princess still. Not to say that she didn't try for Elizabeth as well. She did invite her to Edward's christening, but nothing like the scene in the show. When Anne was executed, Henry sent the poor child far away and did not wish to see her.
Jane did NOT do that much for Elizabeth! People this is a TV SHOW!!!! Almost no one here is how they really were and almost none of these things happened!!!!!
No Jane never would have helped Elizabeth, she was Boleyns daughter, who she tried to get away from as much as possible including Jane Rochford no one wanted to be around her because they all thought she was a lying bitch, and supported Mary over her, and she was a howard however distant, her family's enemy. I'm not saying Jane was a bad person but she really wasn't the glorified saint she is so often maid out to be in fiction.
She was nicer to Elizabeth and did more for her than Anne did For Mary. Yes, Jane didn't do as much as was presented in the show, but she did something. Anne treated Mary like crap and didn't defend her to Henry. I could actually *see* Jane trying to give money to Elizabeth and being kind to Jane Rochford(who was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Jane in rl).
Innocent saint. No. But she was much, much nicer than Anne was.
It's possible that Jane would have eventually tried to do something for Elizabeth. She specifically asked for Elizabeth to be present / participate in Edward's christening.
It was not something that she had to do. Remember that Mary wasn't present at Elizabeth's christening.
Reconciling Henry with Elizabeth would have had to be done in small steps because there was still bad feeling against Anne.
It would have been interesting to see the kind of Queen Jane would have been, had she lived.
I don't think really anyone back then was considered a saint. Anne Boleyn wasn't a satanic monster, but she wasn't a saint. Same thing with Lady Jane Grey and Jane Seymour. Mary I certainly wasn't a saint, but compared to many others rulers before and after her, she really wasn't all that evil.
I think it's wrong to assume Jane would've "never" helped Elizabeth, especially considered towards the end Jane's life she took an interest in the girl.
Jane Rochford was not seen as a "lying bitch", in fact the idea that she fabricated evidence against her husband and Anne didn't come up until long after her death. It was mostly likely made up to dismay her as a Catholic.
Notice how quickly Henry decides to meet his daughter after she submitted to his will. He could have just filed the submission away and continued to ignore her-but I believe deep down he cared for his daughters even though they were less in his eye than his sons-Henry Fitzroy and Edward VI were treated like Princes all the days of their lives.
MARY,(lovde children) While Henry ignored Elisabeth ,Mary stepped in.Mary sent her gifts of cloth and pocket money, and feed, household was lacking, many time, and they spent the holidays together,mm
He looks almost relieved when he gets mary's submission. He did dearly love her. he shouldn't have done it to her.
