The original title of the Slovenian march, the name of the Serbo-Russian March and is dedicated to the Russians and the Serbs, who participated in the Serbian-Turkish war. At that time a lot of volunteers from Russia, which fought against the Turks in Serbia, to help Slavic brothers.
Tchaikovsky composed the music themes from the Russian and Serbian folk songs and national anthems!

when i listen to this song, i imagine an army in a desert, a fight between Cartago and Rome, i imagine egypt and ancient civilizations... this song is perfect...
Disappointing when I realize just how few people who, despite having a genuine adoration for this song, cannot associate with any sort of imagery or epoch. A song meant to chronicle the suffering of the Slavic people at the ends of the turks is completely lost. Rather than fantasizing of a column of Streltsy trudging through the morass of a winter campaign people use this as a theme song for Call of Duty and Halo. Something very depressing about that to me.
@CEShannVfB Agreed, it seems that so much of the history that inspires epics of such proportion or often lost in the popular culture who choose to assign frivolous meanings to timeless tales...
Tchaikovsky was the Black Sabbath, or even Metalica of his era. His music is so hard hitting. Listening to it is like being punched in the face and then smiling because you enjoyed it. These are not "songs", these are 19th century jams!!!
@mrlaymansterms1 I totally agree, 9:17 is like a ship accelerating into warp, hyperspace, or whatever. It's like he wasn't even in the 19th century when he composed this.

@Fredrik1ST Agreed. Many of my favourite classical composers are Russian, not just Tchaikovsky. Borodin, the Rubensteins, Glinka, Rachmanninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Stravinsky are a few other examples that I've listened to and enjoyed.

Original title Slavic march was "The Russian-Serbian march" (composed of parts of the Russian and Serbian songs). Tchaikovsky make this work after the war, Serbia and Turkey in which they participated and Russian volunteers (Glory to them!). The commander of the Serbian army at the Battle of Adrovac (Serbia) was a Chernyayev (Lion of Tashkent), then was killed Nikola Raevsky (alias Vronsky, Anna Karenina)

@Meli1246 My sister played this as her first ever orchestral piece with West London Sinfonia last year and it was SO cool to be there! She's a cellist, so the part I know best is the cello line - I can sing it!!
God I hope we can play this well...... The conductor (one of the music teachers) is usually of the verge of a heart attack and/or stroke and/or seizure and/or massive ulcer EVERY practice.
Can you tell he's a perfectionist? There's no need to really be afraid until he's almost falling off his chair, or yelling so load his voice implodes on itself, so you can barely hear him, but you know EVERY word he says. THEN you KNOW your f-ed.

Always loved this piece. A few years have passed (lost the tape; yes, the TAPE!) and found it, rummaging, was recently listening to it. Wonderful. What most of the younger, & older people are missing. What is with this seemingly growing 'new' class of snobs actually look down on this sort of stuff?! Plus, a lot here seem to be HS students. US I assume. Why UK, Ireland, Europe etc don't encourage more parcipitation? My neice is learning violin, yay! Other than, I'll keep listening!
@MicrobeObliteratorMo but the bass solo is so worth it in the end i would think. I played it in a high school wind ensemble, playing the tuba, and the solo at 6:50 was well worth it.

I had to play the part at 6:54 as a Tuba solo last year because none of the baritones in my HS symphonic band could quite get it right. Best moment of my life (so far), even though I screwed up the first measure a bit : ) Amazing piece none the less.

Some of those parts are based on the Russian National Anthem "God Save the Tsar". It is used in the 1812 Overture and also by Rimsky-Korsakov in Russian Easter Overture. It was a Russian patriotic thing to use the National Anthem.
@aquastriad Those parts are variations of the Russian national anthem, which he used in both pieces. and, i will say, are those similar parts are very fun to play as a bass instrument :)

We just got this peice in my wind ensamble. Normaly, the bass clarinet never plays anything more complicated than straight 16th notes, so I was really shocked to see what I had to play in the peice. XD Sounds amazing though, and I'm gonna work really hard on it!
i've been playing this for a year with my orchestra. we toured strasbour this week gone by and we were amazing. note perfect. it's an absolute joy to play (i play the violin).
not bad for an orchestra ranging in age from 14 to 18 (:
Very nice! In a burst of patriotism, Tchaikovsky composed and orchestrated what was first known as the "Serbo-Russian March" (later to be known as "Marche Slave") in only five days.
Is composed of parts, themes from the two serbian folk songs and themes from the Russian anthem "God save the tsar"
@iMegabyzus so true at 2:15 i just started man screaming at my gf. This song just brings out the inner beast. then at 3:20 it's like nothing happened. She's looking at me like wtf
Ah, how I miss playing this song, I really enjoyed playing this song. I played this song with the San Diego Symphony and I played Piccolo on this song and I really enjoyed it. This is a good recording but it's always better to be apart of it. :)
(No, seriously... and if you don't know about his life story, I seriously recommend watching BBC's "Discovering Tchaikovsky" mini-series, it's fantastic)
11 people can't accept the fact that Tchaikovsky is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times better than Justin Bieber.

After listening to this, I stopped and reflected on how amazing this was. Music these days really lacks the beauty this has.

Ah, how I miss playing this song, I really enjoyed playing this song. I played this song with the San Diego Symphony and I played Piccolo on this song and I really enjoyed it. This is a good recording but it's always better to be apart of it. :)

I played an arranged version... it sucks compared to this.
The arranger totally killed the mood and style. Completely missed out the ending, save the iconic stabbing block chords.

I know how to play it in piano ^^

Where did he get his inspiration from?
vjv100 2 years ago
From his gay lover
(No, seriously... and if you don't know about his life story, I seriously recommend watching BBC's "Discovering Tchaikovsky" mini-series, it's fantastic)

Oh wow. I'm going to keep that in mind as I play it... lol.
