Devs were able to make illusions, taking advantage of the low res to make it look just as good as the ps2. For some games, the psp had better character texture than the ps2 . It'd be easier to compare if it had anti-aliasing and a higher res.

nowaday the ds remembers me like when the ps2 was the wors console technicaly but got the most bids. people usualy buy the cheap hardware the ds was worse than psp in graphics but as it was "cooler" and cheaper it earned the most bids as for the wii now: the ps3 and xbox360 has better graphics but as wii is cheap they buy it.

@treverpatey I never said the cpu wasn't important, of course it is, but the GPU does most of the work, and also your RAM memory and many other stuff. A gaming device is like clockwork, every bit of it has its importance. In this case (PSP vs PS2) the low resolution certainly helps the PSP graphics look sharper than the PS2. And the cpu within the PS2 does not vary its frequency like the PSP, helping it render more polygons in greater resolutions.

Resolution has quite a bit to do with this. PS2 resolution = 640 x 448 = 286720 total pixels. PSP resolution = 480 x 272 = 130560 total pixels. The PS2 has more than twice as many pixels to render as the PSP! Not only are there fewer pixels to render, but the textures don't need to be as detailed on a PSP. The PSP is also so old now that developers have learned all the tricks to making the games look great. In other words, the PSP is being used to its full potential.

@gregorythegreatest15 You are very wrong, the resolution difference isnt phenomenal, almost all ps2 games run at 640 x 448 and psp has a native resolution of 480x272, so the psp is running at 2/3 the resolution of the ps2. This is the folley of standard def, also, with pcsx2 (a ps2 emulator) you can juck up the resolution. Side by side, the emulator is very beautiful and crisp.

Also, pure speed doesnt mean better, its the effiency and IPC (Instructions Per Cycle/Clock) of the CPU that matters. Going back to AMD Athlon 64 vs Intel Pentium 4 days, amd could clock one of their processors at 2.2ghz and wreck 3.0ghz P4's. I cant really speak with much knowledge about the 2 different system's gpu's though.

Most PSP games don't have ANY shadows because there is just not enough juice to handle the realtime projections. Silent Hill and Dirt 2 for the PSP both utilize realtime shadow-mapping technology, but the shadows aren't that great either, the shadow-map resolution is still too low.

"half black" games are NOT easy to create as shadows require a lot of fine-tuning.

Games like Dirt2, Silent Hill, God of War, Dante's Inferno, etc. use the Shadow-mapping technique which is ok, but still eats up some resources and is usually not tweaked well enough to look good.

Raytracing is still not implemented into video games as it requires some heavy computing and is not suited for real-time apps yet.

I personally think that ps2 graphics are a little bit better, when u look at tekken 5, the graphics are more detailed, are also a bit sharper. Manhunt 2 on PS2 looks really great, while the PSP Version looks like it would run on 256bit colors.

They use a bunch of crappy stuff like clear blocks and add some color on certain spots, and viola. with the PSP's smaller screen, you don't notice that it's just a bunch of different squares of color. Its a trick to the eye that sony uses with see-through blocks, and a lot of pixels. thats how they pull it off. but regardless, the way they utilize this method rivals the graphics of the PS2. pretty amazing for such a small machine huh?

If you pay attention in a game like dissidia final fantasy, you will notice why the graphics look so awsome in such a small game. For such an old PSP game, the graphics rivaled that of the ps2 games of its time. BUT, while playing duodecim, its better graphics, better gameplay partner, i saw something. when terra flashed in a cutscene with onion knight, her hair...it was a flat thin block of pixels. the parts without it were see-through. Sony pulls it off solely on pixels.

The PSP has a lot stronger GPU than it does CPU. This can be seen when you play poorly programmed games like Angry birds. With update 3.5, Sony upgraded the CPU clock from 266 to 233 Mhz which helped a little. Finally, many of the PSP games run at a lower resolution and color bit depth than the PS2, hence why they apear to be just as good. (This is also why these types of games don't output to TV)

All in all, i like my PSP, and prefer it any day over any Nintendildo offering!
