The idea that you can balance the faith based economy of the Harper ideology with the environment is a distraction & myth. Environmentalism is not the right way to deal with 'environmental' issues. Ecology is the science that can best handle this problem. Ecology is the scientific way of understanding the economy. Environmentalism breeds the concepts that Harper talks about at the end - using technology to reduce greenhouse gases. Biodiversity trumps technodiversity. Invest in natural capital.
It just boggles my mind how so many armchair experts think they know more than the thousands of scientists who have researched the subject and had their work work approved through the peer-review process. Do you really think scientists like James Hansen and Andrew Weaver have not examined previous events in Earth's history? Get real folks! Stop spewing hot air and show us some peer-reviewed science that refutes anthropogenic warming.
In prehistoric days the atmosphere was hot and harsh. Plants and bio-action ended up storing what was in the atmosphere into the ground. Humans are digging it up and putting it back into the atmosphere. Doesn't it make sense that we're then restoring the atmosphere to prehistoric conditions?
That's just smart... I, for one am not in favour of giving money to other countries for "hot air". Canada can live within its own means and reduce actual pollution... SO2 is pollution, CO2 is not.
David Suzuki is an idiot... I wonder if he owns shares in Al Gore's Carbon Credit company...???
He's an idiot... And probably owns shares in Al Gore's Carbon Credit company... Sorry Davie but right now Carbon credits are selling for a whopping $5.00/ton... What a bunch of morons... lol That scam aint workin... lol
The world does not revolve around the good of the people, it revolves around money, cash, green bills! We live in a capitalist world, not socialist, it's as simple as that, nothing to add. If you don't know the basic rules of capitalism, than do some research as I already said earlier. Think straight
By the way, I don't respect politicians, any of them. Just be aware that this little bit of information I'm trying to give to you guys is to make you realize that this is all bullshit, no matter who you vote for. If the real solutions are not profitable for someone(excluding the "normal citizens"), it's no good with oil.
What about the carbon tax : It, in no way, brings the oil consumption down significantly. We need to apply technology that we have NOW for transport. We could've replaced oil for many years, radically. We need to STOP consuming the oil, not tax it... think straight
ALSO, here's a little teaching to see how careful he is when he uses this technic of disinformation : did you notice he keeps starting his sentences by "I think, I don't think, I believe, It seems, etc.". All these are also used by Bush very abundently. These words take off the responsability from the person (harper) that uses them... see more next
hey buddy, did you research on the subject? I guess not cuz this is not critical thinking, it's a speech made up to confuse people, I explain : the main cause for both "so called" green house gasses and smog is essentially Carbon Dioxyde (CO2), so talking about them as 2 completely different things is just a way to make people think that smog has nothing to do with oil when it has everything to do with it...
but you cannot control smog if you don't control green-gas emissions! harper is definitely talking to the less educated canadians, and to those who have a lot of money. clean air act is a joke and please educate yourself before judging a policy that you personally never hoped for. clean air act is a joke, harper knows it well. companies can still pollute but we'll have to buy macabre lightning bulbs. a JOKE.
Give your head a shake... What the hell do you think Kyoto accomplishes? If you're a polluter you need only buy carbon credits and keep on polluting. The clean air act attacks the actual pollution... SO2 and other toxins... CO2 is not pollution and Harper is not buying into the Kyoto BS... As we speak, Russia is selling Carbon Credits for around USD$2.00/ton... That's a joke.
you ignorant co2 increases greenhouse gases because they keep air from going up in the atmosphere: it is called greenhouse effect. never heard of it? it causes smog. still doesn't ring a bell, eh? HARPER IS DEFINETELY TALKING TO THE CANADIANS THAT DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT THEIR GRANDCHILDREN WILL LIVE IN. you just proved my point.
Gaud... I have never come across such a "science illiterate". Take a bottle of pop and chill it. The colder it gets the more gas it can hold. The cap screws off easily... replace the cap and let it stand allowing it to warm... The warmer a liquid gets the less gas it can hold. When the ocean gets warm it lets off CO2. When it gets colder the ocean absorbs CO2... Get it?
Now, back to the bottle of pop... When the bottle of pop gets warm the gas inside makes it very difficult to unscrew the cap as there is a great deal of pressure inside the bottle... Applying heat to a liquid forces the gases out of the liquid... Then there is something called evaporation... Applying heat to a liquid, like water creates water vapour... That is the #1 Greenhouse Gas. That's right, water Vapour accounts for 95% of all greenhouse gases.
... In all cases, heat must be applied in order to release Greenhouse Gases, including CO2. So you see, it is impossible for CO2 to drive global temperature. The temperature "Heat from the Sun" drives climate change... It is impossibe to work it the other way around.
Keep in mind that the global temperature has dropped by .07 degrees since 2000... Hello...
Plants grow best with 1000 ppm and the earth has seen higher than that in the past and right now we're at only 385 ppm... That's another joke... CO2 does not cause global warming, global warming causes CO2... Moreover, CO2 accounts for less than 2% of GHGs... and man contributes only 2% of the CO2...
you are right. BUT there are so many other reasons than global warming to take measures for the survival of ecosystems and species and human beings' well being that there's no excuse to keep on living like there'll never be an end to the resources. when my grandfather was a lumberjack in ontario and quebec, everybody thought there were no limits to the wood they could get.
Those are things that Harper knows... and I support his resistance to get caught up in the hype of the doom and gloomers... That's just smart... 10 years from now the earth will be chilling and people will look back on the hysteria of this period and see it for what it was... a big Hoax... Thanx for your input :-) It's been fun.
you may be right. but again, for whatever reasons measures are taken, we have to reduce our consumption of everything and stop being economically counter-productive (big companies earn the money, then taxpayers have to decontaminate lands and care for sick people). companies are only waiting for incentives and laws to change their scheme of production. they know they'll have to do it sooner or later, they prefer later.
And what do you conclude from that phrase? In the full context of his comments it is clear that he isn't questioning the existance of 'greenhouse gasses' or the underlying science. It is intellectually dishonest for the Liberals to take this out of context, especially when the full context outlines a vision for environmental protection and outlines concrete action on the issue. Surely Dion's commitment to the environement should outweigh petty politics?

Harper is right on target, and a shrewd diplomat that is demonstrating good critical thinking skills. I only wish he could go one step further.

That's isn't "clear" at all. He says he is going to deal with the issue because of "perceptions"; not because he believes there is a problem.
