@Changles Ravel may have been referring to the only "public" love affair. Interesting. He was certainly a genius at orchestration. I think he had some feelings for others however. Wouldn't it be something to travel back in time and spend some time with him? His life was cut short by severe dementia. In the last 5 years he was not even able to communicate. People tell the story of Beethoven...Ravel's life was also tragic. He referred to Beethoven as" the big deaf one". Ponder this.
@wildejag I like Ravel and its sad that he suffered dementia in the twilight of his years. I guess i have to do some research on this. Thanks for your post.
Michelangeli probably has the best interpretation of this 2nd movement to date. I listened to many other great pianists playing this, including Argerish whose recording is often cited as a reference, but Michelangeli's just has something more.
@raphtx This is magnificent! You should also listen to Alicia De Larrocha's versions as well... Wonderful! There's one with Leonard Slatkin, another with Jesús López-Cobos and a third I think with Charles Dutoit.... Look for them!

he reportedly spent a year in a monk monastery as a young man. he was also a champion race car driver, first-class skier, medical doctor and claimed he was descended from st. francis of assisi. fascinating and enigmatic human being.
@politicopol yes, and his students, who were accepted free of charge, actually had their meals prepared by ABM. They were also given "lessons" in fine wines also.
The recorded sound is "wavery" and flawed, but no matter when the performance is one of such rare insight and beauty; this is one of the most remarkable videos on YouTube, IMO, and Michelangeli is in my list of "top eleven" favorite all time pianists: Rosenthal, Richter, both Lhevinnes, Schnabel, Horowitz, Gieseking, Kapell, Moiseiwitsch, and Cliburn.
Benedetti-Michelangeli takes liberties with tempo & rhythm that you don't hear in the original recording (Ravel conducting, Marguérite Long at the piano). Reason: Ravel wrote both first and second movements to fit into the 8 minutes of two sides of 12-inch shellac disks (the third on one, and as encore, the Pavane on the fourth - two disk album). Thank God for the freedom of later recording - Benedetti- Michelangeli is right as rain in his interpretation!
I'm an idiot at math - that's three disks, six sides. It's the music that blows one's mind! By the way, can the original Ravel-Long recording be found anywhere?
I can't believe only 13,000 people have seen this clip of an exquisite performance of one of the most beautiful concertos ever written... have to tell my friends about this.

One of my absolute favorite recordings. Especially I like the expression on Mr. Michelangeli´s face. Not to mention the expression on Mr. Celebidache´s face when the cellist is playing to load in a particularly beautiful passage, and his mouth moving, so that one can only imaging the words he is using... The second movement is total beauty. And Michelangelis fingers are also a great pleasure to watch!
