i think it does say "a version of man" rather than "burgeoned man" as burgeoned doesnt really make sense in the context of the song, and also the chorus definitely says "swim until you can't see land.. are you a man or you a bag of sand" :] bag of sand, i think, is a metaphor for 'sink or swim' type of thing
