  • such a true portrait of human nature

  • I was really heartbroken, and I still am sometimes, but ever since I watched that movie, I feel it's alright.. intimicy is a lie, and I accepted it.. as soon as that happened, I felt good again.

  • "Because I want to know everything... because I'm a lunatic." "Because I'm addicted to it (the truth), because without it.. we're animals". That's me.

  • I think it's interesting how her being safe is a constant topic in the movie. When her and Dan broke up the first time he said "it's not safe out there" and she says " oh and it's safe in here". Then when she's in the strip club Larry says he will look after her and she says she doesn't need looking after. In this scene her safety is brought up again at 00:50 . I wonder if it's brought up because she has a borderline personality disorder.

  • @Nightingale19727 I don't think it's about a personality disorder.. she represents a type of girl that is like a treasure, a diamond. for example the taxi driver asks: "is she your's?" "yes she's mine" she's like something to possess.. and the one who possesses her is very proud of it, because she's so beautiful and young. why isn't it safe out there? because there are thousands of man, who would like to possess her.. that's how I understood it.

  • @leoniddead that makes sense too. Its another way of looking at it. The reason why I brought up having a personality disorder is because in the original play she cuts herself and she also asks Dan if he is ashamed of her. People who have borderline personality disorder are a danger to themselves because of their cutting, suicidal and risky behavior. She also doesn't look when she crosses the street and in the play she gets hit by a car and dies. That's why I think Dan and Larry bring up safety.

  • i love this scene: who r u? i am no one.... hit me, hi me fucker... oh natalie you are such a good actress and i love you so much, hope for you and your little baby so

    many beautiful things

  • If someone tells you that he or she does not love you anymore THAN LEAVE THEM ALONE AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE.

  • i guess the line "I don´t love you anymore" has something to do with the line she told him at the beginnig: The only way to leave is to say I don´t love you anymore. Goodbye." When he asked what she does when she still loves the man she says: "You don´t leave.". I think she still loves Dan when he´s telling him this line in the end and it shows such a paradox with that what she told him at the beginning, but she knew she wouldn´t end it no else way than telling him this, because he´s so obsessed.

  • what she says about love in the end is so true...

  • Basically he is a loser, because he fucked around on her but then wants her to remain untarnished. Alice was right to cut the strings, because he ruined it all with his hypocrisy.

  • @Vitaluv He didn't want her untarnished; he says "you had every right". He just wanted the truth. Still, I think he's the second worst persone in the movie, after Anna.

  • this was reall love....

  • Oh.. Natalie, you so perfect.

  • "Without truth, we're animals."

ahaahaah Why did this scene made me feel satisfied? Because the dialogue and acting are intelligent.

  • "Don´t do this Alice talk to me" "I am talking fuck off!" ahahhahahhhhh

  • I'm not sure whether Alice really slept with Larry or not. In this scene, I think what's going on is that Alice now realizes that if Dan has a commitment to the truth, she can no longer hide. She said early that "lying is the most fun a girl can have." She had also said before when Dan broke up with her earlier in the movie that "she was supposed to be the one to leave." I think she is no longer interested because she can't play the game her way. What a lost soul...

  • I think Alice did fuck Larry. otherwise how else would he have known Dans Nickname for her "Buster". Dans a coward anyway. He happily hits Alice but couldn't take a swing at Larry after he coldly dropped his bomshell. Out of the 4 characters Dan is the most defeated.

  • She is so beautiful.

  • Great film. I'll never forget, one of the best of all times. Great scene sad tho, he had it all but greed got the best of him.

  • (U)

  • Great scene there is an awesome chemistry between Jude and Nat !

  • nahh i disagree cilourock

  • Now this is a captivating scene, ladies and gentleman. Also a masterpiece in the world of le cinema!

  • damn that movie is messed up but it's really good

  • She actually did sleep with Larry. I thought that she didnt, but she did. I looked it up to be sure.

  • He was such a horrible schmuck in this movie.

  • this movie is truly amazing every little detail is thought through, the whole script could be a quote, so well done by everyone involved, it really makes you think. beautiful movie.

  • -I love you!

    -Where?

    -What?

    such a good dialogue!

  • Where? Show me where is this love?

    I can't see it, I can't touch it, I can't feel it.

I can hear, I can hear some words.

But i can't do anything with your easy words

    Oh i <3 it

  • Todos mienten , al final

  • This is exactly how I feel, me and my ex had everything, we were perfect, he destroyed me and left me half a person by lying to me and cheating on me and leaving me for his ex. I spent 18 months still madly in love, dying to have him back but got over him. And he's finally appreciated me, and wanted to give it another but after a few days I realised... I don't love him anymore, and I'm furious at him for ruining everything, for being too late... because like her...I would've loved him forever

  • give it another go*

  • @LolaRose04 If its any consolation I did the same thing to the woman I love that your ex did to you, and there hasn't been a moment in the last 2 years that I don't think about her and the beauty that might have been... even cheating assholes like us have hearts. I have learned my lesson, and a harder one I have never learned. Perhaps he has too. In any case I'm so sorry for your loss, I hope we all find love again.

  • @Bladesmith79 Ur comment was unrelated to me but I would like to say thank for making me believe that people can actually be sorry for cheating. I never got an apology and this makes me feel better that men can regret cheating.

  • Wounderful couple and a sad ending...

  • Why did Alice lie about her identity?

It's such a mystery for me.

  • @Yuxzi becouse she enjoyed the lie

  • I don't love you anymore, goodbye!

    Amo esa frase!

Agh! amo a Natalie Portman!

  • This movie always makes one wonder, is love even real anymore? Does it exist? People just always feel the need to be with someone for companionship. Is it love, or just gaps being filled?

  • Love is what we all seek....

  • @mattgarciatx

What we all need to ask ourselves is do we first seek to be loved or to love? I think the latter shows the healthiest frame of mind and results in the longest, most meaningful relationships.

  • @mattgarciatx Good question. The answer is simple. Love is loneliness & an illusion from the mind. It all in the head not in the heart. See the mind, our brains is a very fascinating human organ. It can make you believe what you want to believe in.

  • @mattgarciatx And your right about that, People will always want the need to be with someone to have companionship or should I say to feel loved. And also to filled the gaps. This whole planet including you and I we all want to feel care for till the day we die. To hear those three famous word from an significant other everyday saying I LOVE YOU.

  • @mattgarciatx The reason why we want & desire a relationship in the first place. You hear people talking about getting serious or wanting to get married. But that's loneliness talking not love.

  • @mattgarciatx Once we reach that certain age or mid point in our lives. That's our last recall in order to save ourselves from depression. Cause at the end secretly we are just sad pathetic lonely people inside. Love will always go back to it's old tracks the beginning, what started it all in the first place. LONELINESS AND INNER PAIN EXISTENCE. Remember that. Oh by the way excellent movie A+ in my book. lol

  • @mattgarciatx I know what you're saying. My sister & I are twins & best friends. We do everything together, so "falling in love" with someone is almost obsolete...I know it sounds odd. I mean, almost everything I need in a companion I have in her. I just don't see any guy ever measuring up to the level of friendship, trust, etc. I already have. Do I really need to "fall in love" with anybody? It all seems a mere phrase since I already have a best friend. Hmm. You got me thinking!

  • @mattgarciatx

It is what you make it, basically. Play with it and you wear it out. Use it and you lose it.

    Sounds trite but it's true.

  • @mattgarciatx life is all about "gaps" being filled, one way or another.

  • Dan was such a weak and pathetic man. Even after watching this movie several times I still stand by the firm notion that after he met Anna he never truly loved Alice. He was much more fascinated with her. When Anna said "you just don't want other men getting their hands on her" she was correct. Dan was needy and possesive and when Anna wouldn't have him he tried to rekindle something with Alice, but she saw through him. She realized how transparent his feelings were for her.

  • i LOVE this movie, so much.

one of my favorite moments is when Dan (Jude) goes "Because I'm a lunatic" and he just looks at her with this dopey expression :)

Natalie's character is so whimsical in this. And I thought it was a bit poetic that at the end of the movie Jude and Clive's characters were addicted to smoking again and Natalie (Alice) was able to quit with 'deep inner strength.' I think there was an underlying message in that simple statement how men are easily manipulated.

  • This movie is so real, that's why is so special. I think everyone can relate to the history. I just love it.

  • eu nao sei se eu suportaria isso tudo...palavras muito duras q foram ditas na lata...esse filme é real! E tenho certeza q retrata a vida de muitos nós!

  • I love this film. It's so raw. Twisted at times but just so real, confusing and heartbreaking. No relationship is a carbon copy of those romantic comedies.

  • why did she do that? i mean he only wanted to know. i would ask the same question.

  • alice (jane) is brilliant

i love this character shes so fucking real.

  • a bastard calling someone else a bastard. funny.

"where? show me. where is this love? i can't see it, i can't touch it, i can't feel it. i can hear it...i can hear some words. i can't do anything with your easy words".

  • I love that part!!

  • oh shit. so sad.

  • I love U...where??...I love that is so true!

  • "I'M NO ONE!" 5:20 ....brilliant

  • This is the actitud, both sides. I understand both sides... Sad but true

  • i had kinda same situation with this....

its so sad and hurting me...

  • hello stranger :)

  • one of the greatest scenes from the movie!

  • 2:51 ---I guess jude shouldnt have left the room for even a minute...ouch..

  • lolz

  • Now, to shed a little light more "closer" to this scene is someone trying to "ignite" the fire inside him. For what? to leave him? if that was so easy, she could have simply said it and leave. Why'd she need that drama, that passion to end it and btw, who said true love can end just like that. she was a liar herself. she simply "forced" him to act the way he acted. a woman's love can melt mountains of hatred, why'd she not want to give him enough love to bring him on the path of true love?

  • watch the fucking move, god damn you stupid motherfucker

  • She cheats on him, He cheats on her, obviously the End was closer than they thought. They ffucked their own lives with their own hands and can't blame nobody. Try not to get wrong message from this movie as it is so easy to.

  • she doesnt cheat on him.. you need to see the movie before giving such "meaningful life statements".

  • i think watching this particular scene can bring out any such "meaningful" statement which are "meaningless" to you, of course.

  • I love this movie b/c the reactions are sooo real. I've experienced the instant fall-out-of-love feeling. It happens when you know the one you love doesn't view you as perfect anymore. It's real. And the scene with Clive and Julia, when he wants to know the details of her affair... men are really like that. They want to know. I experienced this before ever seeing the movie, so I was completely shocked at how accurate they portrayed these situations. Bravo.

  • 4:36-4:51 best moment

  • ill always remember the hit i the final.... her face it's just amazing...i don't have anyother words to say about it

  • I completely agree. In fact I just watched the scene to see her face again. The look she gives him, like "ohhh no buddy you really crossed the line", it's amazing. God, such a great film.

  • la forma mas cruel de acabar con el corazon o almenos hasta ahora

  • what's the name of the movie?

  • Closer

  • omg this move is amzing im doing this scene for a duet for school :D

  • I think Alice lies when she says "Larry fucked me all night". Because when she tells Dan the truth, he doesn't believe her. So she tells him what he wants to hear. That's why she says at this moment "I don't love U anymore"; she's has understood that he doesn't trust her, he just want her to says what he wants to hear. That's my point of view. That's why she looks so surprised when he says "I knew that". Because it's not the truth.

  • I think the same cilourock

  • Comment removed

  • @lizy9 i think your both homos

  • i have the play and in it she does fuck larry. not just once but many times. i personally believe that she doesn't want to be hurt again and still hasn't fogiven Dan for Anna. good analysis though

  • I agree that she told him what he wanted to hear, but I don't think it was a lie; Larry and Alice did fuck. It's obvious when she says "Why did he tell you? How could he?" They actually did it.

  • I agree, but just look at her face when she says that. It is not anger, but incomprehention... She wonders why Larry told that, if it is a lie. It is how I see this scene. But I think Mike Nichols did it on purpose, to keep the truth... :)

  • @cilourock yeah, then why larry said to dan that alice was madly in love of him, how could he knew that unless he never gets to be with Alice,he did not achieve his revenge, that´s why he lie, that´s why he is able to say that she is in love of dan.

  • @cilourock Same! It was useless to tell the truth, because to Dan, she would be lying.

  • @cilourock i think the same too

  • @cilourock i still cant work this out..

  • @cilourock

No, you need to understand the characters throughout the film. Alice is revealed to be a mystery throughout the movie. When Larry meets her in the club, she offers him no intimacy; he calls her "cold at heart", and before that he detects her as "sly" during Anna's exhibition. The film concludes with her being revealed as Jane Jones (ironically the name she called herself when Larry was begging for someone to be close to after his revelation of his wife's infidelity with Dan. And.....

  • @cilourock

...And the fact that she's been accused to be untruthful by both Larry AND Dan throughout her scenes in the movie, she realizes then and there (on the bed after he returns to the apartment) that she's appears stone cold to those who have loved her. She almost passively confirms it by telling Dan, "I don't wanna lie, I can't tell the truth so... it's over". Essentially through metacognition she recognizes she can't lie to a man who so persistently begs for truth.

  • @cilourock In the play there is a scene missing from the movie where Alice and Larry are together. They both know they aren't in love and they are helping each other get Ann and Dan back. But yes. They have slept together.

  • Comment removed

  • @cilourock anna*

  • @cilourock I think that Alice doesn't lie because when Dan tells her that Larry told him that she fucked her she says ''why did he tell you? how could he?''She is surprised because she can't believe that Larry told him that it happened!and she doesn't understand why.She just admit it because she has sick of Dan's behavior.''show me where is this love? i can't see it, i can't touch it...i can't feeil it'' <-----because she belives that's real love. What happened with Larry was just a fuck

  • @cilourock I don't think she lied! She looks surprised when he says he knew it simply 'cause she didn't know he knew it.

  • man, this movie just shits all over what love is. these characters (natalie, jude, clive, and julia) don't know what true love is, and that is what is so tragic about it.

  • ohh my god¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ she's complitly beautiful... look at her face after the hit...

i don't have words to say about her beauty... peace off.....

  • Go on, Hit me fucker!

  • Love this film, so destructive.

Some people say that you can't fall out of love in minutes. I disagree. It IS possible.

I think what alice really means to do is give up the relationship, maybe she did stop loving him. I always got the impression that that is what she does. She wants men to obsess over her, and then distroys them, or a part of herself. I think alice is a victum, but i also think shes a cunt.

  • I think they're all cunts.

And the only reason Dan is obsessed with the truth and is all of a sudden "addicted to it" is because he's projecting the way he feels about his behaviour onto her...

He was the liar, the cheat and he assumes everyone else acts the same as him

Someone i know said they had to leave the cinema because it was depressing because it was about a "bunch of people with no integrity fucking each other over"

    but thats the reality !

  • I never said i was on Dans side. I'm not, he is not a good person. But people who comment on this video seem to only sympatize with Alice, totally ignoring her faults.

  • i love this scene <3

  • i looove this scene!

  • best scene ever

  • best scene in the movie.

  • i was so sad they didn't get together, they were so cute, but ya dan was an idiot, go alice

  • DAN IS SUCH AN IDIOT!

im so glad that alice left him in the end,

    cause he didn't deserve her.

  • didn't deserve her

  • i luv this scene very much i have seen this movie 4 to 5 times i luved ittt... clive owen u are the man

  • I agree more with Budaphly regarding Fredzeve's opinion.. you can't have love with out compromise even Owen's character said it in the movie. Jude would not compromise his obsession with control and truth over the concept of love and trust with Natalie.. and therefore Natalie understood his never changing personality; you can't have love with out compromise.

  • me n my frend are doing this scene for a show, and omg ilove it! xx

  • oops meant to say *couldn't lol

  • but, some of the writing in this movie at this point gets stupid.......who are you? im no one! as if anyone would ever say that shit..... hes a douchebag......natalie portman is the bomb

  • and hows he gonna try to get mad at her fucking the other dude.....i dont know if she really did or not......but hes an idiot, fuck him

  • She did the right thing by dumping that cunt, he let money and his ego get in the way of true love fucking cunt. this is what happens when you become a player that late in the game, 4 years deep in a relationship and still acting stupid. Should have left well enough alone.

  • yeah fuck this dude........hes a homo, pussy, faggot..... he left her for julia roberts, a stupid cunt

  • show me

    where is this love ?

i cant see it, i cant feel it

    i cant touch it

    i cant hear it

  • its actually

    I can hear it

I can hear some words, but I can't do anything with your easy words.

  • just wondering...

is this video really soft or is it my speakers?

  • its soft

  • I wanted to kill him when he hit her.

  • "I am talking, fuck off!"

  • Dan: it was the moment of my life.

Alice: this is the moment of your life!

    Dan: you were perfect.

    Alice: I STILL AM!

man, that is the best scene

  • This was originally performed as play in London written by Patrick Marber I believe!?! I think first in 1999. Most of the dialogue is the same. Maybe some add ons for cinema pop.

  • "I dont love you anymore goodbye" I love that line she is so strong

  • i have to disagree with that. she is actually weak. she's so in love with him - that is very obvious.

she's fragile - he's hurt her before - so instead of dealing with her real feelings and fears, she just shuts down.

you don't go from being madly in love to having no feeling toward someone in a matter of minutes.

  • she didnt shut down. it was her realizing she cant love him becuz he could fall out of love with her again as easy as last time. hes the type to easily fall in and out of love like he did wit julia roberts character. so reely he never falls in love, but more of in obsession and lust. she was strong becuz she realized dat about him in this scene and was strong enuf drop her own love for him.

  • YES YES YES! This is so good! I love Closer!!!!

  • "Because you weren't there!"

    wow.

  • I absolutely love this scene. Portman is such an amazing actress, en the lines are fantastic.

  • Natalie's character Alice has a point, she can't feel Dan's love or be in love with him anymore since she's now realized that he's not in love with her, he's simply obsessed and will hurt her again easily................some people can't learn to love........

  • On the contrary, she falls out of love because he is in love. When he didn't love her she wanted him, but when he got needy she fell out of love.

  • i disagree. she fell out of love because jude law's character was obviously obsessed with something else. love is such a strong feeling it can easily be confused with other stuff like PRIDE and shit like that. you have to look closer to see if what you have is the real thing.

  • in fact i think he was in love with her, but insisting on her answering the truth, made the special thing on the relationship dissapear, its like the same as if you are betrayed by someone you love, even if you forgive her, things will never come back, cause the "special" thing wont be the same. His asking destroyed it, her fairy tale isnt magical anymore(thats why she changed her name with him, to live a fairy tale or something like)

  • oh rudi what you did to me!

  • I totally agree with you!

  • it kills me

  • you were perfect..i STILL am!

  • wow... great acting here

  • this is a wonderful movie....makes you realize that you have to put a lot of effort to make a relationaship work....closer is a real story, its a story that people tend to ignore because they want to live a fantasy where true love makes all the pain go away...but this movie is an eye opener to the real world...a world that is harsh...that has a lot of pain n distrust in it....thanks for the video....could you upload the entire movie!
