if i do this do i go into combat or do i sit at a computer? i know that they all go to combat training for 8 an half weeks. im just a lil curious cause i wanna do some thing that doesn't involve bullets fly next to my head
Previous language is irreverent. It is what they need. If they need someone who speaks Russian, you will have a major advantage in school, but you will still be going.
The demand for people who speak the Russian language is actually on the rise, so there is a decent possibility, but there is NO guarantee.
@Kapo465 If you know the language well enough you could also consider joining as a 09L Translator. While being a 35P Crypto Linguist requires you to be proficient in a foreign language, translators need to be fluent and have a more language oriented job.
DLAB was tough, especially since I went in without a clue. You should study the rules before you take the test, but I passed it without knowing the rules beforehand. The rules were easy until the last segment. The last segment joins all the rules together, which is killer. I'm headed to the DLI after basic in a few months... looking forward to Cali.
@joshuastoner1 It is unlike any test you've ever had before. It's a completely made up language. My advice: Study the rules for this mock language on the test well before you begin answering. They will always be shown, but it will help you manage time if you don't have to keep reading them. Having a good grasp of English grammar helps, too.
@NinJaMamasita It is all verbal (audio) on a PC. All one section, no written. It's pretty easy to pick up on some words, but once you go on to more difficult parts, the syllable sounds start to run together, if that makes sense. Expect to be timed. It is similar to a foreign language test, which I'm sure you've taken in either high school or college, except you need to grasp it within 5 minutes. If you have any questions, just message me on here.
@stayfresh41 Hi, I'm thinking about going for crypto. But my recruiter told me that I'm not able to take the DLAB until AFTER I enlist. Was this the same for you?
@pinaymod I took it, and I'm not enlisted yet. But I live about 20 minutes from MEPS Salt Lake. So it was easy for me to just stop by and take it. Depending on where you live, they might have to fly you in to take it. Which costs money. See if you can get your recruiter to set you up to fly out with the next group taking their physical so you can take your DLAB. Or just wait till you go take your physical to take the DLAB
@pinaymod You can secure you job BEFORE you enlist. DO NOT enlist until YOU get what YOU want in writing. The recruiter is gonna do the same thing after you sign. You are gonna have ti live with what you sign. This is the only time you will have the control. Pick what you want to do, and be patient.
Actually you have to go into DEP before you take the d-lab, however if you want out of DEP, you just have to tell them that you want out and demand to be let out. They have no choice but to let you.
The classroom looks so glamorous there. Like an awesome secret glowing room of secret awesomeness. They probably turned off the lights so that the grime would glare too brightly in the camera.
@JoeZaza100 sir first off i suggest you pick a concrete stance to take while writing a post (takes a while to see what you're trying to get at), also regardless of whether or not you feel that the linguists trained for this job are "exploiting" the training for themselves that has no bearing on the fact which is: Yes the need for individuals who owe allegiance to us and are qualified in this particular career field are still and always will be very necessary to national security.
Oh snap its goodfellow. I feel like they should have showed more of monterey if they wanted to recruit more people. But they also should have showed the parts where youre sitting in your room at your desk screaming at the piece of paper in front of you covered in another language; looking at the calender date that says DLPT 5 and yelling "Its not fair". Also companos.... mmmmmmmmmm
@konishikong Too funny ... it does seem like the DLPT comes at you out of nowhere. Its funny how this commercial makes it all seem so interesting ... and though agree that it is important to our national security ... those that have had the great privilege would agree that the actual training can also be the most monotonous experience on earth. Personally, could not wait to graduate.
@Shinugami I don't know man… I ride the fence on that one. IS it better to learn them to protect the U.S. … or is it better to learn them to improve personal freedom worldwide? Our flag may stand for our republic, but our republic stands for liberty & justice for all. I find it hard to believe (and see) the many linguists who learn a whole new language, because while that's a leap in itself, it's usually colored by folks as something done for exploitation instead of enlightenment.
@elfantasticolorenzo Has it ever occurred to you that warring countries sometimes acquire enemy weapons to better understand them? Not only don't I find it strange, I also think it's highly apropos given the linguist speaking in front of it is a Russian one. Why are you going so nuts about it, anyway… what—did you think he was in Russia? He's at Goodfellow AFB. Pfft.
Wow terrible russian

DLAB was pretty easy. The "hard" thing is learning the language.
I'm in tech right now and its not too bad. Don't stress.
