  • It's such a touching song :")

  • this was my musical just one week ago.

  • thank you for this! Does anybody know where to find this in its entirety?

  • Thank you posting this. Im doing working this summer at a musical theatre camp im going to and im gonna use this as my audition piece. But I don't really know the show, can you tell me the story and is he the main character?

  • @Moritz015 "Working" is based on a 1972 book by Chicago-area writer Studs Terkel, which is basically a collection of interviews he did with normal people talking about their jobs and their lives. There aren't any main characters - the musical is written around several characters who give solo monologues (taken from the interviews in the book) and/or sing a solo song. This scene with the steelworker is at the end of the musical, but he also has a monologue at the beginning of the show.

  • @jdewbre Thanks for telling me. We did this at the end of July...and I got this part!!! Unfortenitly we had to give solo's to everyone cus it was a camp and everyone had to have a solo. So I only had the song and they gave the monoloues to other people since they didn't have that much even the one in the middle of song -_-. But this still helped me so thanks for posting it.

  • Working is such an underrated show. We performed it back in my highschool and I was the cleanin lady but this song as always my favorite!

  • how did this song end up on my favorites o.o i mean this guys got a great voice but ive never heard this before and somehow its on my favorites... dont get it..

  • He's better in this than in "Grease" or "Rocky Horror", I think. He's absolutely beautiful, and moving.

  • my friend sings this in our school production of working, i almost cry every time he sings it.

  • I cry everytime i hear this song..

  • Did anyone else notice that when his voice spins on the long notes, his head shakes? I believe that's what happens when you manufacture vibratto, but I could be wrong. Great portrayal, though!

  • @adamz2010 No, you're exactly right.

  • ah stuuning...so heartwrenching...

  • I preferred his performance in Megaforce, just say'in.

  • Someone said they can't imagine another song portrayal of Millworker being sung better than this version? Well, I know the play should stand on its own, but if I were to just judge the song on its own, not even close! From what I understand, James Taylor wrote Millworker for the Studs Terkel play. I'm a fan of JT, and heard him sing it live a few times. Nice sentimental song, but once I heard Bruce Springsteen sing it, there couldn't be anyone who could touch it!!!

  • No... Taylor wrote it before hand... it's been recorded DOZENS of artists like Bette Midler and Emmy Lou Harris. For me, Robin Lamont from the OBC and Jennifer Warnes' version from the TV special are the most haunting.

Done the show 3x as "Mike/Steelworker", and in 40 years of doing professional theater, this was the toughest song for me to do without breaking down- I ALWAYS made the audience cry on this one...

  • my school is doing this musical tonight and this song is one of my favorits

  • This play was great at my school, and this was my favorite song, really reminds me of me and my dad.

  • This is the song that I sang at my school play when I was 18, which got me into theater. Now I'm auditioning for AMDA in LA with this song. This song is a big part of my life, and I wonder who else it has touched, be in theatrics or, maybe, even in the meaning of the song.

  • the guitar is vaguely reminiscent of Godspell. oh schwartz.

  • yea so this is pretty much awesome. I will be playing the part of Mike Dillard the ironworker next week in my school play. This song sounds so great here...hope I can live up to it!

  • dont mind me saying so, but our musical in Holland from "Working" expeccially this song, was better then this one.

  • The intent of this movie is to portray the experience of the worker, hence the title Working. I feel it is almost impossible for any other version of the song to better portray the experience of a laborer than this song.

  • I'll try to put the song in dutch version on youtube, so you can see for yourself

  • BEAUTIFUL. he deserves to be a musical legend between this and the Rocky horror picture show.

  • This is definitely my favorite song from "Working" Simply beautiful. Millwork is also incredible. On the whole an amazing play, I only wish it was better known

  • Wow. PERFECT in every way. Mr. Bostwick gives a stunning performance.

  • such a great actor. that monologue was flawless.

  • Oh my gosh....Barry's voice is absolutely hypnotizing to listen to...*swoons* It's a pity he's not more well-known, he's one of my favorite actor/singers.

  • I LOVE Barry Bostwick! He is truly great. He really can sing and act at the same time.
