First album I got was Human, and it might just have been that philosophical twist that turned me off (Leprosy didn't convince me either though - despite Chuck's obvious genius). I imagine that many bands & kids like me may have felt the same - death metal in the 90's was, in my opinion, about body bags & birth butcherings or antichrists etc...I suppose that philosophy just wasn't cool enough..unless wrapped in grindcore grunts

Napalm Death pioneered grind, and early carcass pioneered goregrind. You sir, need to get your facts straight. Napalm Death weren't anything close to Death Metal up until Harmony Corruption, and even then it still retained grindy elements. As for Carcass, nothing of theres was DM until Necroticism.

The most convincing argument however is probably an interview with Barry (unfortunately in German, by Thorsten Wilms, 2001) in which he himself says that (loosely transl.) "people have always termed [them] Grindcore, or of course Death Metal, but somehow [we] were always just Bolt Thrower" (on boltthrower com, see interviews).

@ meddelhed - thats a very good question and maybe my answer wont satisfy. To begin with, listen to their debut, which was termed "hardcore" at the time. Second, Death Metal lyrics usually concern killing, blood, splatter etc. which clearly isnt the case with BT - Karl, Dave, Martin etc. 'sing' about war and its casualties (killing yes, but in another sense). Of course, Bolt Thrower has songs that would qualify to be called Death Metal - this doesn't make them a Death Metal band though.
