On March 26, 2009, he died while skiing in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy. After performing a double back flip, McConkey intended to glide away in his wingsuit. But McConkey struggled to release his skis. By the time he got them off, he'd been free-falling for 12 seconds and was too close to the ground for his wingsuit or parachute to do him any good. His parachute did not malfunction; it was never deployed.
@mPUAinfo Description: The jump was to be a wingsuit ski base. Ski off of a mountain, do some flips, then pull on release cords that are attached to upward releasing ski bindings in order to jettison the skis and fly away from the wall in the wingsuit and deploy.
@mPUAinfo Shane did a double back flip in perfect McConkey style. As planned, afterwards, he went to release his skis. This is where the jump went wrong. He was able to release the right ski, but not the left, to make matters worse, the right ski became in-tow on the left.. He remained focused on releasing them by reaching down to that left binding. This put him into a spin/ unstable falling style, that was out of his control and not his concern (continued...)
@mPUAinfo Shane was only concerned with reaching that heel piece on his left ski so that he could release it and achieve a snag free deployment. His movements were intentional and deliberate. He succeeded in releasing that left ski off of his boot and then both skis were gone. He immediately transitioned into a perfect flying position; but he was too low. Less than a moment later, he impacted the snow, and died. RIP Shane
McConkey performed a double backflip from the cliff and planned to release his skis and then fly in his wingsuit, a stunt he's executed a number of times. But when both skis failed to release upon tugging on straps leashed to his legs, McConkey went into an upside down position as he manually attempted to release his bindings...................... ...
Because throwing a chute while inverted poses the likelihood of the canopy and lines becoming entangled in the skis, McConkey used valuable seconds to focus on removing both skis and succeeded. He quickly turned into a classic, face down BASE jumping position to throw his pilot chute (which pulls out the main canopy), but after 12 seconds of freefall he struck snow immediately before there was time to react. He was killed upon impact.
Hi there. I live in Norway, near one of the most famous base-jump places in Norway. Where did he perform this stunt? I live near "Lysefjorden" and "Kjærag"...

From what I've read, he was doing the triple backflip wearing skis and wingsuit while basejumping move when he died.
I wonder what made this jump different than the others?
8mycrab 2 years ago 2
supposedly one ski didn't came off, so he started spinning very fast.
There's an article on theadventurelife(dot)org.

Yeah, bro, I did that once. Except without a parachute or wingsuit. Or the triple backflip. And the cliff was a lot smaller. But I did that once.
