Been searchin Koko Taylor clips on youtube to find out who was her guitarist in the mid-eighties. He made a big impression on me when I saw him (and her) at the Chicago Blues Fest. He played a hollow-body, and man, he sounded good. Can't find the info I want, though. Anyway, good raw blues is still alive. Check "Rosetta West - Underground."
@mielazul Frustrating. Knocked out too. I've only been able to find his name, Michael "Mr. Dynamite" Robinson. No story or even a bio. Maybe somebody knows something? Links?
@heyjustathought Hey, thanks for responding. I've been looking into this more since I last wrote here, and I came up with the name Eddie King. He played for Koko at the time I saw her (1986) and he played a hollow body electric. So that might be the one...but I haven't looked into "Mr. Dynamite" Robinson though, so I'll follow up on that. Thanks again.
@mielazul Hmmm, we both may be right. Robinson and King both played guitar on Koko's only live album, although Robinson is given lead credit. Thnx for the follow up. Koko Taylor LIVE FROM CHICAGO: AN AUDIENCE WITH THE QUEEN (Alligator) 1987 Koko's only live album, recorded in front of a wild hometown audience. Grammy nominee. AL4754 KOKO TAYLOR, Vocals MICHAEL "MR. DYNAMITE" ROBINSON, Guitar EDDIE KING, Guitar JERRY MURPHY, Bass CLYDE "YOUNGBLOOD" TYLER, JR., Drums
I think they're synching. What show is this from? I suspect German TV? Great to see these people though, The next performers (who were they?) in the wings towards the end look distinctly uncomfortable, Many thanks
I saw her more than 20 years after this at the Chicago Blues Fest, and she was still awesome. The thing that stuck out the most for me though was the tone her guitarist was getting - he was playing a hollowbody electric and it just sounded so GOOD. I recently tried to research who that was, but I can't be sure. Eddie King? I'd love to know if someone can tell me. Check my channel for good raw blues, btw
I remember driving thru Alabama at 3am thumbing thru AM stations for a local talk show. Then I heard "Here is KoKo Taylor". This song stuck in my head all the way to Ft.Worth.
I reckon the harmonica player is Little Walter. By those years Sonny Boy Williamson was an old man. Love all the great blues harmonica players. Must be a great harp band up there!
@Johntheresonator i hope to join them some day, been playing harp for over 40 years, all of them were influences on me, as well as Paul Butterfield, Jack Bruce, Keith Relf, and Robert Plant who were the white players that i learned from
Love it! Erykah Badu covered this live at her concert last week and it was serious! she broke it down and really captured Koko's sound with her whole band. It was so fun!!!
Koko Taylor was a very sweet woman, and a class act all the way. Met her years ago (a few times) and she treated my daughter VERY nicely. Left us with some wonderful memories.
@shinigami285 This clip - along w/ many others posted here coe from The American Folk Blues Festival DVDs [4 vols.]... I have all 4 and they are priceless. Amazon.com has them at reat prices.
Watch Out! Koko had to call up Pistol Pete in order to crack a smile outta Hound Dog 1:01. He sure didn't seem to be too Wild About [Koko] Baby! Not even her gold tooth or singing about pitchin' Wang Dang Doodles could move him! *grin*
@suitman36 ... What a Lady! ... She starts calm but by and bye she digs in flaming rythmn'---"Tell Double Crossing Ed,/ Tell Abyssinia Ned / Tell ole Pistol Pete / Everybody gonna meet / Tonight we need no rest / We really gonna throw a mess / We gonna break all the windows / We gonna kick down all the doors / We gonna pitch awang dang doodle all night long..." What does that mean? Willie Dixon took that from an old lesbian song "The Bull Daggers Ball" says Mike Rowe in te book Chicago Blues.
I love this clip soo much.I'm compelled to list the reasons.1>Koko's voice is a force of nature to be reckoned with.2>She could pitch anyone's wang dang doodle all night long every day.3>It feels like such an innocent song although I'm always thinking naughty thoughts at the lyrics.4>Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee are there and they too are legends.5>Little Walter plays a mean ass harp throughout.6>The key reason I love this clip 2:40 Houd dog goes from stone cold cool to dirty little smirk.LUVZIT!
Little Walter looks like he's in his early-sixties in this video, and he died at 37! SMH. He must've lived an extremely hard life, especially since black folks usually look young well into their fifties.
@Codycole80yep, and the same goes for somebody like otis spann, who looks much older than mid 30s in the videos here on youtube. these people lived their music, lived it to the hilt. that's the difference between them and most new blues performers.
@Stressed2Capacity course that's sonny terry and brownie mcgee they are ace. they must have been up next like in joolz holland show....uh dont get me started!
@Stressed2Capacity Yes, that's a funny moment. Of course 'pops' is Blind Sonny Terry, sitting next to his long time musical partner Brownie McGhee. Terry was a harmonica player in his own right but of course the great Little Walter is up there preaching a sermon on his harp. Wonderful Willie Dixon composition and wonderful, wonderful voice by the sorely missed Koko Taylor.
Anyone know who the skinny guy is on guitar behind Koko? The other guitarist looks like Matt Guitar Murphy.
@Stressed2Capacity Actually we've both missed other posters comments that it is Hound Dog Taylor. I looked on Google images and there he is, there is even one of the guitar, saying it is a 'wiring nightmare!'
@gmarky81 I was responding to the comment made by stressed2capacity, he made reference to the old guy sitting down, on the video, at around 1:49... I thought it looked like Sonny Terry...
@Stressed2Capacity - That "pops", if I'm not mistaken, is the great harp player Sonny Terry and the guy next to him is his long time partner Brownie McGhee.
