@merlyn: if by "dead star" you mean a neutron star, the incidence on the parent binary stars' orbit would be vastly different than merely the wobble caused by a Jupiter-size gas giant and it would be very obvious from the observations.
Also, gas giants don't really have an 'atmosphere' as Earth, Venus or Titan have, in that there isn't a discernable limit between the clouds and a surface, it's all 'atmosphere' to their incredibly compressed core.
The assumption is that it has an atmnosphere. It could be just a black rock or piece of a dead star. It could even be a smaller rock eclipseing the star because of its distance. Planitary detection is only in its infancy! We havent even sent a probe to look at our own solar system as a base line from at least two 90 degree points. Without that its all guess work!
So again, what is that music?
