If I see that sileage heap hanging about up here, I'll take the bastard axe to him! Baaaasstarrrds! You'll all suffer! I'll show the lot of you! I'm gonna be a STARRRRR-R-R-R!!!!
Thank you so much! It makes me want to cry every time, not least because I used to have this DVD edition and my son lost it! Wonderful to have it on my ipod.
wonderfull! makes you almost dizzy as a fairground ride. i bought the annaversary edition of the film (in the tin box) and it contained a seperate cd with all the music from the film on incuding this!
The ending of the book? There is a screenplay (which ends the same as the film) and a couple of reference books concerning the production, but there is no novelisation of the film where events are different. Are you referring to the true story of Bruce Robinsons friend who the Withnail character is loosely based upon?
No, I've heard about this book too. Bruce Robinson made it so he shot himself at the end, I read, but he changed it for the film on account of it being "too dark". Apparently he wanted to leave the audience with "Marwood's hope, rather than Withnail's despair". Can't say it worked that way for me, but...
i need to find the song played while monty withnail and marwood drive into penrith to get some wellingtons, its the amazing french sounding piano piece. heard it on antiques roadshow today actually.. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IT IS??? ill send you a cheque xx
you r spot on, the end is so sad after so much manic humour. As you said, its a fitting end to a truly brilliant film - I count among the best people I have known and know - true Withnail & I appreciators
Yes, you are so right - I only saw Withnail and I for the first time the other day and I was taken by surprise at how affected I was by it. That concluding theme music is so haunting in the context of the movie...
This music gives me a feeling that can't be captured by words... it kind of feels as if my stomach has dropped out... makes me want to weep and burst out laughing at the same time.
Apparantly the soundtrack now comes with the 20th Anniversary DVD, so i would imagine it would be more available from download sites etc! Or you could just buy the DVD! Hope that helps soulscreach.
Unluckily the score contains only the D.Dundas and the R.Wentworth original pieces. Not to say, they most convey the original feeling of the film. But you won't find the Hendrix and other pieces there.
The other day I almost bought the original sountrack vinyl from ebay. Oh, why didn't I? Six pounds!
Tremendous tune , so evocative of the time the melancholy of the sad clown meets Randall and Hopkirk or Jason King. Enough pretentious tosh! Best british film ever!

I love this theme, but I don't know what the pluck at the end (2:37) represents. Is it the end of the track or is that when the screen fades out?

I love this film so much.

When i first saw this i just wanted to jump into the film at the end and say ' I'll be your friend Withnail, hold on, wait for me...'
TheMagonian 2 years ago 9
I agree with yo TheMagonian. he seems so lonely....
I prefer the film's ending to the book's. Withnail kills himself. Nooooo!
Methinks this is a creepy tune.

No, on a webpage I found there was a mention of an unpublished book written by Robinson.
However, I understand this may have been a mistake so I aplologise if I offended anyone wth my earlier comment

i think the slight fairground-ness is a good thing.
its like it should be funny, but its not because its so sad.
a piece that brilliantly concluded a great film.

i agree wholeheartidly
so many emotions, you want to explode
i think the music where's out in the field is more emotive for me, I think the fariground-ness of this track detractys slightly...
but I'm splitting hairs
