Probably the best rendition out there. Simple, honest, pure. It reminds me of a small gig I saw in Chester (yeah I know: Chester's not in Scotland) where a friend o mine played the guitar and the tin whistle and the singer, a scottish woman with a real sweet voice, brought tears to my eyes with this song. I may be French -and of italian origin- but in the emotion of the moment I really felt Scottish for a few minutes :)

@Sklavier There's many theories as to why it was written, but one most probable reason is when the last Scottish rebelion,. the jacobites went South from Loch Lomond to attempt to get Scotland back, they where caught by the English and half of them where sent back to Scotland the rest as they called him back then Bonnie Prince Charlie had the rest executed.

The high road is the people walking back to Scotland and the Low road is the spiritual path through the underworld.

It kind of is a funeral dirge, dude. A scottish soldier sentenced to death by the english wrote this song for his sweetheart and told his friend who would survive him to take it back to his darling. Its about how he wishes he could sit on the banks of Loch Lomond with his girl one last time before dying. Its the saddest thing ever

Actually yes. I'm 21 and when I was a child I listened to Disney mucic cassets and this song is on it. They were sung by people involved with disney so I Imagine that it was in a cartoon of theirs. Thought the words are different its basically the same.
