  • Probably the best rendition out there. Simple, honest, pure. It reminds me of a small gig I saw in Chester (yeah I know: Chester's not in Scotland) where a friend o mine played the guitar and the tin whistle and the singer, a scottish woman with a real sweet voice, brought tears to my eyes with this song. I may be French -and of italian origin- but in the emotion of the moment I really felt Scottish for a few minutes :)

  • This is the best rendition I've ever heard.

  • Well done!

  • scotland thumbs up, england thumbs down.

  • @MrZaf12 Fuck you. You can be English and enjoy the song as much as a Scot would.

  • THANK YOU

  • Thank you !!!

  • Absolutely magnificent. Well done, my friend, well done.

  • great voice man, well done

  • 4 people are English imperial cunts!!!

  • Scotland Forever!

  • Awesome job dude!

  • Brilliant! One of the finest versions I've heard (and seen). My hat is off to you sir! This is very moving indeed! Thanks alot for sharing! :)

  • excellent thanks for posting

  • I am french and I adore all scottish melodies and espacially Loch Lomond.

Beautiful song - Beautiful voice - great guitar accompagniment .

A real real pleasure - Many thanks, Bob

    Cathy from Brittany

  • Nicely done.

  • Very nice! nothing like listening to a folk song by someone who obviously loves the song.

  • @Sklavier It is actually a rather sad song to be fair though, why its sung like that.

I mean I don't really care for that myself, which either way its sung, its a lovely song.

  • @Sklavier There's many theories as to why it was written, but one most probable reason is when the last Scottish rebelion,. the jacobites went South from Loch Lomond to attempt to get Scotland back, they where caught by the English and half of them where sent back to Scotland the rest as they called him back then Bonnie Prince Charlie had the rest executed.

The high road is the people walking back to Scotland and the Low road is the spiritual path through the underworld.

  • @Sklavier I mean I should know I am a Smith, the clan i would have been apart of would have been from that area in Scotland, where all clans had their smiths but they had their own clan around Loch Lomond.

  • I love this voice. Perfect for this song.

  • you did a great version .....amazing

  • your fantastic

  • very nice thanks

  • Are ye' Scottish ?

  • wow

cool relaxed little version of an enormous(but cool) old song

  • Very good i was impressed

  • Oh I jam some guitar as well ..go figure ???

  • Hey Mr. Bob , that was some great stuff !! This Southern California (USA) Scott ...salute ya !!!! Hey man , I played basketball on a highschool team called the Highlanders ...and they wondered why I went for 20 points and we won all the games ....! HAHHHAHAHHAAAAAA ! God Bless !

  • really good do u think you could send tabs?

  • Very nice. *****

  • Are ye Irish or Scottish, because ye sound a wee bit like either. Course that could just be me. Good singer good sir.

  • actually, that is all theory. the origin is unknown.

  • sry, but without any rhythm!

  • @Mexicain89 He's white, what do you expect?

  • @dmckean44 Not clever, bro.

  • I could be wrong but I was taught this song is about two good friends who were jailed an one was to be hung and the other set from so you take the high road and I'll take the low road means one will travel by spirit the other by road (low road) but which one of them wrote it I can not remember ... whichever they are both dead now.

  • Great!

  • Absolutely brilliant!

Im sure I have seen you before doing Old Skibbereen on youtube under the name bob along or something, but cant find it now, are you the same guy, I'd love to track that vid down?

  • Alba Gu Bràth!

  • Just beautiful. One of the first songs I learned as a wee lass, never so beautifully played or sung.

  • nice playing and singing.......

  • Beautiful song, wonderfully done. Thank you

  • Finally, someone who doesn't make it a funeral dirge! Well done, boyo, well done!

  • It kind of is a funeral dirge, dude. A scottish soldier sentenced to death by the english wrote this song for his sweetheart and told his friend who would survive him to take it back to his darling. Its about how he wishes he could sit on the banks of Loch Lomond with his girl one last time before dying. Its the saddest thing ever

  • @benthemagnificent

    i think he knows that

  • @benthemagnificent nah man, all the other versions on youtube sing it too f-ing slow, without any instrumentation apart from the orchestra version, and this sounds more like a folk version

  • It is a funeral dirge. Its about someone who has died away from home and lamenting how he will never see his true love again.

  • right on.

  • wow.

  • nice job man I'm scottish myself never heard it better keep it up.

  • wow this is an awesome version of this song... there was another version on youtube a couple months ago...one with a young girl/boy duo singing a jazzed up version. Anyone know where I can find it these days?????

    I like this song... 5star

  • I just remembered why this song sounds so familiar. I think if heard in an old Disney cartoon. But with different lyrics probably. Does it rings any bells to anyone?

  • Actually yes. I'm 21 and when I was a child I listened to Disney mucic cassets and this song is on it. They were sung by people involved with disney so I Imagine that it was in a cartoon of theirs. Thought the words are different its basically the same.

  • I am a sixth grade teacher, and am teaching this song to my students. I love this song, and truly appreciate your musicality. The playing is very fluid, smooth, and melodic. I cannot wait to see how this will turn out for my students. Perfect song for the coming spring.

  • He is a best songer! I have never heard songed it is!

  • Each time I watch one of Bob's videos, I can't believe what I'm seeing. And he is a great person to have a conversation with... I wish I lived in Scotland!

  • Whatever nationality, I think anyone who can gather around and hear this song will drop their weapons, because everyone has always heard that memorable line 'You take the low road, I take the high road'

Thank you, sir, a beautiful rendition.

  • LolOlliepopp--

actually it's "you take the high road, i take the low road"

  • he looks like my english teacher mr lundstom

  • I can listen to him over & over...& over.......& just don't want anything else... feel close to home:']

  • Sensational.

  • Firstly I like the image you look cool before you open your mouth. Then your playing was impressive and then you started singing and it blew me away. Smooth as silk with a accent so crucial to singing this sort of folk song. I am 47 years of age and this is the best that I have ever heard this done anywhere I have travelled in the world. I wish I could have heard you sing it live I'd have stood you a few beers for that.
