You can go there for daytrips without taking damage from the radiation, however more than a day you will start to take damage. wich is why no one can live there.

The reactor at chernobyl had a meltdown, the whole surrounding area was covered in radiation, forcing people to evacuate the town.

Radioactive decay occurs when an unstable atomic nucleus begins emitting isotopes. The rate at which it emits these isotopes determines how safe it is to be in a given area. All humans receive radiation from the sun, but at such a slow rate that a regular person would get less radiation in their lifetime than somebody working at the Reactor 4in the Pyripat Nuclear Plant in, say, five minutes.

I highly doubt the Ferris Wheel works because

a) there is no electricity there, due in part to the lack of a power plant, and that is due in part to the meltdown of Reactor at the Nuclear plant.

b) i'm sure after more than 20 years of inactivity and abandonment, its components are far too rusted to ever operate again.

I live in America but I desperately want to go there, just to see what there is to see. Isn't the place at 52 seconds the reactor that exploded? How did these guys know where the hot spots were too? But really, just seeing this makes me want to go even more. Lastly, can't you be arrested for going into the zone of alienation?

Hi,

At 52sec, you can see the reacor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The reactor exploded indeed.

A lot of places are decontaminated, or they put fresh sand on it. I suggest to walk only on asphalt or concrete, because rain did a lot of raioactive particles desapear.

You can only visit the zone with a guide, otherwise you can be arrested, but more important, may be you are walking in a hot spot without knowing...

Oh yes and you should try the video game series "S.T.A.L.K.E.R" It takes place in the zone, its accurate but it takes it one step further by making the zone seem so distant. Nobody can live in Pripyat for at least 600 year, but i think it will be more something like 60 000 year. There were plans to tear down pripyat, but the old habitants have protested. I hope it will become an unesco monument.

It is strange, some appartments in pripyat looks better then some appartments in the suburbs of Kyiv!

You can only get access with a guide. You have to book a tour with an official agency. During first 10 sec., you can see the checkpoint at the border of the 30 km zone around the reactor 4 of the Power plant

Normal radiation is 0.050 microroentgen, on that place it is 1.000, the most in the zone where we came.

When you enter the wood on your left, radiation will be some 3.000 or 4000

The pool was used till 1998(!) for workers of the plant and habitants of Chernobyl.

Now it is empty... It is known from Call of duty 4 or Stalker. (I'm not a gamer myself...)

The ferris wheel is never been used. (Exept for a test ride) The fair ground with the wheel, cars, ... was placed as a gift from the government to the people from the town Pripyat. Normally the fair ground should be opened at may 1st 1986, but on april 27th, Pripyat was evacuated.
