I'm glad so many others think this film deserves more credit, I think Danny Boyle is a great director and never fails to deliver. One thing the film manages to do that few others achieve is terrify me. It's terribly visceral and its depiction of the vast nothingness of space is truly haunting because it's exactly how I'd imagine space in my mind. I'm an atheist and I know there's nothing waiting for me in the afterlife but stardust and this film acts as a constant reminder. It's magnificent.
