A lovely song indeed but it's hardly applicable today is it? Time has moved on big time and if you are gay then you're gay and that's the end of it. Nobody cares one way or the other - much like being left handed.
My understanding is the anti-gay laws and actions by the Police were quite severe. in the UK. I have been told the whole cultural response was quite harsh. Even worse than the US before Stonewall. I have been told this song was quite a powerful and brave social statement given the state of English Society at that time.

I don't know if Tom Robinson is still reading, but you were my inspiration back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There were so many times I just wanted to give it all up amidst all the isolation I was feeling, but you taught me the importance of building coalition and taking pride in one's self. That's a daily challenge even though society has eased up a great deal. The only time I hide now is when I feel I'm in grave danger, and that only happens once every three years or so. Many thanks!
why would you wanna stick your thing up a twat when there's millions of gorgeous men around?
It doesn't bother me that people are straight.
I guess that's just what sexual preference is about. Too bad society favors one and tries to diminish the other. Too bad our government tries to make laws the prevent us from actually making that choice.
I'm not gay but your way of thinking is all wrong! I have friends who were persecuted for the massive crime of loving another man. Live and let live! You wouldn't like people harassing you for a feeling you couldn't help having!
Woah, I totally read this comment somewhere else. Are you that fucking eager to be told the obvious fact that YOUR preferences are not EVERYONE'S?
Plus there's loads of scrummy men out there, darling. You just wait until you find the man who makes your pulse race, and you'll be eating those words...
Also haaaa, I am amused by your assumption that gay men aren't REAL men. So what, they're imaginary?
Third: The gay hating Nazis were defeated in 1945.
Fourth:The gay hating religious will be defeated by science...only a matter of time before the 'Holy Books' are proven to be a load of bollocks, and that means all of them...Roll on the day
This is the first time I've heard this after years of having it on my "Must Buy" list. Really moving. It's amazing (and disgusting)that much of it still rings true to this day. I certainly related, and I'm 28. You're a legend Tom.
Wasn't Tom Robinson the guy who finally got married and had kids ? Never got the thing whether he was gay or not or just recorded this wonderful song, which was my favorite song in that period.
Any chance of posting your best-ever track on here then Tom? I'm talking "Too good to be true" of course, which doesn't seem to exist in any guise on Youtube.
@drvonnick Nice comment nick, Tom's also from my day and I always thought he was a Woofter, but now I have doubts, so my question is......does up the shitter or what?

Great song, and groundbreaking. Written at a really difficult time for gay people. Tom Robinson - what a brave guy.

Can't get my head round this gay thing....
Why would you want to stick your dick up a blokes arse when there are millions of beautiful women around?
Not that it really bothers me; as long as there are gays around it means there is more rampant totty for us real men.

He did indeed - I think he claims to be bisexual.
bloater999 4 years ago
in theory, he's bisexual, but he says he's "a gay man who fell in love with a woman."
