so..... your teaching ball flight by how hard you squeeze your thumb and pointer finger AND not path and club face position at impact. Well, that is just not correct - backed by science.
holy cow. you're really blowing my mind here mike. hogan, notorious for hooking the ball, calls the fingers he tries to disengage the swing wreckers. this is so fascinating.
@dschultz6072 wow. take your grip, squeeze your swing wreckers. face closes, right? another thing, without the swing wreckers squeezed, the end of the first part of the swing, barring any manipulation, WILL produce a cupped wrist, and an OPEN FACE. squeeze your swing wreckers, you produce a flat wrist.
This brings to mind pg29 of Hogan's five lessons. He talks about using the thumb and forefinger for finesse shots but recommends new golfers even practice with these fingers off the club. I slice, I should be able to cure it by adjusting my thumb and forefinger, yes?
Hi sevam1, I just started playing golf. This Saturday will be my first game played. I was wondering if you had anything for a novice. Although I am learning about Hogan I am looking for some good nuggets of wisdom for just starting out. My concern is to keep the ball straight. Oh, what is the title of your book?
P.S.--I am age 55 but I feel like I can hit the ball darn near as good when I was 25.
Know why? Well for one the equipment helps but persistance and believing helps as well. I can still hit the driver out there 280 to 300 and for the most part it's going on target!! That's what is great about golf---you can play it for a lifetime!!
I am really learning or re-learning alot(just started playing golf again seriously back in spring of 2008) from your videos and from a bit of experimentation. Two things in the last week I discovered; (1) Focus on ball until it is gone(don't chase it with your eyes). (2) Start the backswing slowly; this produces a swing under control and promotes excellent coil. Also, I just began experimenting with finger pressure(I have begun drawing the ball consistently). It works!!!!!
Very interesting about the thumb off. Your videos have caught my eye. I play to about a 5 hcp., but have trouble hitting the the ball consistently solid. Yesterday, without ever seeing this video, I hit balls without the right thumb and forefinger on the club. I hit the ball VERY well. Driving home, I started to wonder, could I actually play in some upcoming tournaments without these fingers on the club? I guess is the answer is "why not, if it works".
Great video. I love Casey's commentary. What a beautiful golden. Casey "forgot more about (Sam) Snead then you will ever know!" Priceless. What a great dog.
Great club speed too. Sevam could hit great sots with a stick.
What are your thoughts on The Golf Machine theory of trying to "feel" as though your right arm does not bend much at the top of the swing in order to maximize your width and keep a lot of distance between your hands and your head at the top of the swing? Is this how Hogan and you are able to keep such good width at the top of the swing?
Yep!! Try it. Your hands react differently on the backswing depending on how and where you are applying pressure. This has an effect on the plane. Not a big one, but big enough to effect the release and that shape of the shot.
Yes because with the thumb pressing on the backswing affects the arc you swing up on and the action of the hands. Grip pressure affects a lot including trajectory. Experiment with it and you will see.
Hey Sevam. love your videos. just got your book. could you explain something to me. i always here that 'hogans swing was based around the equipment of the time etc' . i could accept this for jones era but hogan was using steel shafts. is it BS or do you think hogans swing would be different if he were learning today? i studied hogan until my pro told me hogan was out of date and golf has moved on. i always doubted that. golf is golf.
Hogan used a consistant forward position. Snead by contrast moved the ball back in his stance as he moved in to the higher irons. There is merit to both approaches, but I prefer Hogan's method because I find it easier to aim that way.
Do you think that a forward ball position, constant in relation to left foot, actually results in a variable ball position (relative to left shoulder) if you vary stance width as Hogan described? Whereas if you keep the feet the same width and move the ball away from left foot achieves the same effect...ie. varying the location of the ball relative to the lowest point of the swing arc?
I've done better with alignment using Hogan's method so I'm partial to it. There is no question that many golfers (Snead a particularly notable one) have done well with varying ball position further back as you progress through the higher lofted clubs. I just have not found the consisancy I want with that method. You sure can put some zip on the wedges with them back in the stance though and that would be one exception I might make. You know, if I really had to jack some spin on something.
oh my godness what i whish that i have that swing! If i had the money i would take the next plane to Canada for lessons. You said that you hold the club with a smaller grip with the 5 wood club. what do you mean?
Oh it's just that the 5 wood I am hitting at the end is a ladies club with a small ladies grip, so I have to adjust a bit to get my hand onto it properly.
Makes me think of the aide who showed Mr. Hogan (at his office) a picture of Fred Couples just past impact with his right hand coming off the grip. Said Hogan: "Well, he must not need it there."
I've noticed the same thumb dropping action in John Daly's swing believe it or not. He does it just before the takeaway during his slight forward press, and he loves to play a fade.
I think this is more an illusion as he is getting lower/Squatting , and starting back down with his lower body first, it gives the illusion that the club is parallel. I think the same position at the top, without the squat, and move down, it would not appear parallel. Just my impresion. I've always been amazed by that move too.
Something you're doing similar to Hogan that has always puzzled me. On his full swings his right forearm barely got past parallel to ground and his shaft could go all the way to parallel. No other pro I can think of had that characteristic. Now you.
The right pointer and the right thumb are "swing wreckers"? So, the hacker puts too much pressure or pinches the grip between the pointer and thumb and this ruins his swing?
i missed exactly what finger it was that "dropped off, and where it dropped off to, or what finger was pressed harder, im guessing pointer finger? Casey was being a little flamboyant.

For your general fade shot, do you have the right part of your right thumb gently pressing against the shaft with your right forefinger for support?

Agreed, I enjoy your videos but the kid on the camera is AGGRAVATING.

does this change your backswing plane

What are your thoughts on ball position? Inside left heel for all clubs from flat lies?
Why do some people use the middle of stance for high irons, with low irons moving forward in the stance?

Right thumb slips from a point of leverage on top left of shaft at address to the side of the shaft at the top. This was done intentionally.
