you have it perfect, but the thing that baffles me is the way that when SRV plays it live, in the first few licks, he smacks all 6 strings and manages to isolate only 1 note. I've tried this but theres always some open string creeping in, its annoying

I can relate.I teach alot of people too play guitar but I don't actually teach as a job.I always have said that the key too being able too figure out a song is knowing it in your head as though you wrote the song.You have too be able too almost hear it mentally as well as physically.

After figuring out each note by ear, you end up playing each lick a lot. Also, as I'm learning I continually start the solo over and play along with it, making sure I can keep up. So there is a lot of repetition, until it becomes automatic. Repetition is the whole key, and an amazing thing. I find that each day I come back, after getting away from it, it becomes easier and more automatic. Also I find half of it is practicing in my mind. Whenever I hear the solo I play along in my mind.

but what also isnt so good about play the same thing is that when you first learn it your not good at all...the you come back to it your great at it and its fun to play but then you lose emotion in it cause its not as fun to play any more so it doesnt sounds good thats why its better to play your own version i think...but great playing
