I was there. I was 24 years old and I graduated from USC in 1972. I have never seen or heard the stadium so electric as that night, everyone was standing up in the student section and the place was rocking. It was the greatest football game I have ever seen in person. FIGHT ON!!!
Not trying to nitpick, as I love all the video highlights you have... I just wish you made versions without the music in the background. It makes it SO much better to hear the crowd noise and announcers.
@lbmusictchr yes yhe famine. it always come down to that. here is your answer...the famine is over why dont we go home? why should we. by now most of us are mutts. we would be rejected in Eire.
I'll never forget this day. I was at a JC college football game in Northern Cal. When the announced the score at half time the whole stadium cheered and chanted beat LA. We were visting from Los Angeles. When the announced the final score my
family was the only people cheering in a quiet stadium.
@MrTennesseeVols Cannot stand it can you that we stole your coach and his beautiful wife. She is much happier here in California since she is with people of her own kind; beautiful and intelligent. You have been owned by the GREYMOOSE of USC!!!
As a die hard SC fan took the day off skiing in Taos, NM and watched the game in a common room with people from all over (including ND). First half I was quiet and pretty down. Second half was one for the ages . If I embarrassed myself I do not care.
I saw that game on ABC and absolutely couldn't believe what I was seeing. Talk about a total collapse and ass-kicking in the second half. USC went on to beat Ohio State 18-17 in the Rose Bowl to share the national championship with undefeated but probation-tainted Oklahoma. SC was AP champs while the UPI vote went to OU.
Dudes, I was reading about A.D. in the TImes, he looks like Marlon Brando, put the pictures side by side, he couild be a lead actor, somebody has got to tell him he's missing his calling, all he needs is an agent and Hollyweird.
Did you read the Headline of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Sports Section the morning after? I'll never forget it: 55-24, THIS IS NO IRISH JOKE! LOL Funny!
I loved the one excuse about the Irish having too thin blood in warm weather. Uhh, the temps weren't anything over low 70s that day. Just admit that you were beaten by a better team and leave it at that.

dont hate me because I'm in a better location than you and because we own your I-wish this last decade bwahahahahaahahah!
This, along with Omar Hassan's miracle comeback from a horrific wipeout at 2009 X-Games, will rank as perhaps the greatest sports comeback of all time. QB Pat Haden deserves a lot of credit, as does AD, with his incredible ability to accelerate no matter how fast he's already going.
Is the 1972 game up on YouTube? Anthony Davis scored something like six touchdowns in that game, two of them on kickoffs. I went to that game, too. It was a great game and actually close in the third quarter. The Domers got really confident when they pulled within two points. Then they kicked off to Davis. Bad mistake.
the usc fight song is awesome. but they should've just showed the play-by-play commentary between keith jackson and woody hayes afterwards. the following songs don't fit the beats on the field.
I was a UCLA fan back then. I hated 'SC. I saw this game on TV that day back in '74. I couldn't believe how fast the turnaround took place. It was unreal. I remember Ara Parsegian was just as white as a sheet on that sideline, just could not believe what was happening. I thought about the game today, and looked here on YouTube. Sure enough, here is the video! YouTube is unreal. And, as much as I hated the Torjans back then, so were they....especially against Notre Dame that day!
I was joking about how Notre Dame hasn't beaten anyone significant for years. The couldn't even beat _Michigan_, fer cryin' out loud. Hell, Army would have probably beaten them this year.
Well Ara's last coaching game was a huge upset against Alabama in the 1975 Orange Bowl. So.....like yeah I think he left his coaching career as a winner.

Amen. espn and what other channels are a joke. Thankfully there is Youtube where we can enjoy some real classic sports w/out commercials and loser announcers trying make up a catchphrase and comedy act when I just wanna watch sports. BOYCOTT ESPN
I was 11 at the time. It is still the most exciting game I have ever watched. 55 points in 17 minutes of game time against the defending national champions and the nations top ranked defense! It made a lifelong USC fan out of a young Iowa boy.
I only wish McKay had left in his first string for the last 12-13 minutes of the game to run the score up to 69-24 over those sanctimonious jerks. Army has the record of scoring 59 points against them and McKay threw away the opportunity to beat that. Ara ran it up on SC in 1966 to try and get more votes for #1 so McKay would have been well within his rights to do the same.
USC always runs up the score. Remember that fake punt with 5 minutes to go in 2004 when USC was up big? Throughout the 80's and 90's in which USC dropped 11 straight games to the Irish, Notre Dame never ran up the score once.
That was pretty much Notre Dame's second team the entire time anyway. Notre Dame's first string quarterback, halfback, and fullback were all injured. And still 51-0.
@Gipper4433 "Notre Dame routed Boston College 54–7 in a 1992 game where Fighting Irish coach Lou Holtz called a fake punt early in the third quarter, with his team already possessing an enormous 37-0 lead."
I was 11 yrs. old watching this game with my dad who was a USC alumn. At half time I said, "the Trojans have lost, the game is over". My dad jumped off of the couch and yelled at me, "you can't say the game is over because it isn't, you just don't give up, you keep fighting!"
From AD's opening kick off return, until the end of the game, my dad was hooting and pounding his fist on our wooden coffee table with excitement. The next day his hand was badly bruised. To this day I never give up!
I remember this game so very well. I was 12 years old. I couldn't decide on a favorite college team. I loved both of these teams at the time. Let's just say I have been a die hard USC Trojan fans since 1974!
Was at the game ... dead until AD scored before the half. We all sensed something when he received the kickoff, and STOOD for the entire rest of the half, pinching ourselves to see if all what was happening wasn't a dream. Apparently the varsity showed up in the second half and made the Irish look like a typical midwest team-- dull and slow ... GO SC!
THIS was THE game that made a 13y/o from small town Ms. a huge USC fan-Anthony Davis and those oh so gorgeous blonde cheerleaders!! *Hit puberty that day LOL
I remember this game like it was yesterday..i was a usc fan and my youngest brother,(rip)was a norte dame fan..i was 14 at this time and he was 11..he was all over me,picking at me,(we call it joneing in the south,ga.)at halftime..then the miracle happened..my lil brother never joned me again when it came to usc and norte dame playing each other..
I was waiting in the student line for this year's USC/CAL game and I noticed a somewhat short man in all black and shades with a huge ring on his hand walk by. Unfortunately, by the time I realized it was AD he was well on his way and I couldn't get out of line!
To think AD was drafted by the NY Jets ahead of Walter Payton. Payton goes on to have a hall of fame career and AD never plays a game w/ the Jets. He signs with an CFL team.
They asked Eric Pennick, after his touchdown run,why he didn't do a A.D.dance.His responce was classic"this is Notre Dame,WE DON'T ACT LIKE HOT DOGS,HERE!!!!THANK YOU ERIC FOR HAVING SOMETHING THAT A.D &USC DON'T HAVE CLASS!!!!
My dad was telling me about this game over the weekend at the Coliseum. He was a student at SC at the time but was in a conference and didn't show up until right before halftime. He said after that kickoff return to start the 2nd half it was the most exciting college football game ever.
I waws only 2 when this game was played, but I have an older friend who is a big USC fan who would always tell me about this game. It was awesome when this game aired on Classic. What an explosion!
The are 6-5 against one of the 10 weakest schedules in the country, including the Syracus loss last weekend, but not counting their loss to USC this Saturday. These are *all* Charlie Weiss players. The last two seasons he'll be 9-15 against a patsy schedule that should guarantee seven wins a year. Ty Willingham was fired after three years, with a better record his last 2 years than Weiss has had the last two. If Weiss isn't fired after this year, his fourth, can you spell R A C I S M?
I remember watching this game as a 16-year-old kid. I was rooting for ND but by the end of the game was rooting for Anthony Davis. Most spectacular thing I've ever seen on a football field. Never understood why he never did a damn thing in the pros.
I remember watching this game as a 16-year-old kid. I was rooting for ND but by the end of the game I was rooting for Anthony Davis. Never understood why he never did a thing in the pros.
Archie G. only won his second Heisman because the votes had to be submitted before the '74 ND v. USC game. Many voters said they would have liked to have waited, and then would have voted for AD.
Anthony Davis really should have won the Heisman Trophy this year. He really out did Archie Griffin. Archie deserved the first one in '74; but A.D. deserved the '75 trophy. I like the Buckeyes; but I love those Trojans!!!.
I remember this game. I was only about 13 and right after AD went 100 yards to start the second half the power went out. When it came back on it was 55-24 abnd we were like WTF? Defiantely a game to remember. ND was a legit top 10 team back then but USC played one of the great games every. Especially in that second half.

Let's just say I have been a die hard USC Trojan fans since 1974!

after the game, john mckay ran into notre dame's president in the tunnel.
the president told him "that wasn't very nice"
mckay, a irish-catholic, replied "that's what you get for hiring a presbyterian (Ara) at a catholic school"

i once saw a game where the U. of Houston scored 100,playing third string for much of the game.this one was the greatest comeback i've ever seen.

GO SC!
hackru 3 years ago
Wasn't that slow during 1983-1995. However this is a great rivalry.

I was waiting in the student line for this year's USC/CAL game and I noticed a somewhat short man in all black and shades with a huge ring on his hand walk by. Unfortunately, by the time I realized it was AD he was well on his way and I couldn't get out of line!

It was nice to see the Cubs beat the Rockies 10-3. I thought THAT was the highlight!

in an interview a few years ago, davis said that after the game, a nun walked up to him and waived a cross at him cause she thought he was the devil.

To think AD was drafted by the NY Jets ahead of Walter Payton. Payton goes on to have a hall of fame career and AD never plays a game w/ the Jets. He signs with an CFL team.

I liked how Pat Hayden dropped back far negating the height of the Notre Dame defense.

FIGHT ON!

Living in the past? USC still kiss ass in the present! How is Notre Dame doing?

The are 6-5 against one of the 10 weakest schedules in the country, including the Syracus loss last weekend, but not counting their loss to USC this Saturday. These are *all* Charlie Weiss players. The last two seasons he'll be 9-15 against a patsy schedule that should guarantee seven wins a year. Ty Willingham was fired after three years, with a better record his last 2 years than Weiss has had the last two. If Weiss isn't fired after this year, his fourth, can you spell R A C I S M?

SINGLE GREATEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE...
ever. Davis owned ND on this day.

I have news for you...that was a TD pass, not a run. That was a lateral pass.
But this was great indeed. Not enough bad can happen to Notre Dame, as far as I'm concerned!
generalbullmoose 3 years ago
how can a lateral be a pass?

This is great Notre Dame history here!

I remember watching this game as a 16-year-old kid. I was rooting for ND but by the end of the game was rooting for Anthony Davis. Most spectacular thing I've ever seen on a football field. Never understood why he never did a damn thing in the pros.

I was in high school when I watched this game. Anthony Davis put on a show in the 2nd half!

Archie G. only won his second Heisman because the votes had to be submitted before the '74 ND v. USC game. Many voters said they would have liked to have waited, and then would have voted for AD.
USC55ND24 3 years ago
I agree!
hendersona61 3 years ago
i think your right about that, how couldn't you give to Anthony Davis After What He Did VS Notre Dame! Go TROJANS!!!
masta215 3 years ago
Anthony Davis really should have won the Heisman Trophy this year. He really out did Archie Griffin. Archie deserved the first one in '74; but A.D. deserved the '75 trophy. I like the Buckeyes; but I love those Trojans!!!.
swt32567 3 years ago
A.D. didn't even play in 1975. '74 was his last year. Not sure who you're talking about.

My bad I meant he should have won in '74. He oculd have won in '73 too but,John Cappalleti
won it.Sorry I got my years crossed up. Thanx for the "Heads-up" guy.

I remember this game. I was only about 13 and right after AD went 100 yards to start the second half the power went out. When it came back on it was 55-24 abnd we were like WTF? Defiantely a game to remember. ND was a legit top 10 team back then but USC played one of the great games every. Especially in that second half.

Why is this titled the Anthony Davis game when in the '72 game against ND Davis had TWO runbacks and six overall td's.

The name of this MOST ANNOYING SONG is CONQUEST...The lyrics go: "This is the only song we know. This is the only song we play"
rangerdgd1 4 years ago
Why play any other song when you're USC and you've been conquering teams for over40 years? Everyone knows that song whether you like SC or not.

I remember watching this game and saying 'WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON"????...This year (1974) USC had the finest group of cheerleaders EVER!!!!!!
