  • I agree that it's denigrating to use katakana subtitles just because he's not Japanese. But you could get into the argument that the very existence of katakana is nothing more than a way to preserve that psychological barrier between Japan and the rest of the human race.

  • Why do they give him Katakana subtitles when he's speaking Japanese?

  • @biglardass

It's common whether he is japanese or foreigner.

    Subtitiles are for deaf people.

  • @dondokodokodon I think you're missing the point. Only when the foreigner speaks are katakana subtitles used. Everyone else has hiragana and kanji subtitles. It's as if the foreigner's Japanese is not real Japanese. Kind of denigrating, no?

  • @biglardass

I understand what you mean. What he speaks is real japanese but his pronounciation is not so good (katakoto). Katakana subtile is used for his japanese that sounds foreigner's. It's not denigration at all.

  • @dondokodokodon Okay, but in Japanese TV shows katakana subtitles are used for all foreigners, regardless of their fluency. It invalidates their Japanese. So often when you speak to someone in Japanese in Japan, they react with a kind of astonished disbelief and respond in English. Anyway, I don't know why I let it bother me. This ryokan looks terrific.

Katakana is usually used for something that comes from other countries or associates with foreign things. So I think it's quite natural that katakana is used for his Japanese in this video whether he speaks japanese fluently or not. Again it's not invalidating or making fun of his japanese.
