I live in SF and I'm going to start surfing (well gotta save up to buy a beginner board first) I've surfed a couple of times in Santa Barbara which was a dream- dolphins right beside me, warm water, and small waves suitable for beginners. I don't dare go to OB though, I'll have to drive up to Stinson. You know any other nearby places good for beginners?
You can start off at OB no problem, man. Just go out on a small day and be sure to keep your wits about you. Stick close to shore and ride the white water if you want to start there.

Where is the closest warm water surfing for beginner intermediate surfers close to San Jose? I don't mind driving a 1-2 hours.. if there is a place...
@CiCie777 let me explain something to you.. you live in northern california anywhere near you will be cold. itll pretty much be like santa cruz all the way down to la..water temp wise that is
I've surfed in France, Portugal, Brazil, La reunion island ... but OB is by far the toughest place where I went surfing. I remember paddling for ever is frigid water, not to mention the wipeouts...
It's an evil paddle out that could take 45 minutes. But the winters at OB bring huge tubes that are far me are far more frightening than enjoyable. Bell ringing , board snapping wipe outs, but if you can surf through the winter at OB , you can surf anywhere.
Especially any place with a channel. Just got back from Bali, ( Uluwatu, kuta reef) sick tubes, but a cakewalk compared to OB.
Only in the summer... the surf season for Ocean Beach is Oct - March when the winter swells come and the winds blow off shore. I have seen the outer sand bars breaking at 25+ feet. Sloat and Taraval have some of the heaviest waves around. The original mavericks guys all got chops at OB.
If you think that was huge for OB, then go to wise surfboards and look at the pictures of the double overhead club and see all the pics going back to the '80's/ Triple over head waves and tubes. Not f
Unfortunately I quite a ways south from this sandbar and didn't know how good it was (although more crowded) until I did the looong walk north back to my car. But that is the way it goes at OB sometimes.

Nice! That was HUGE for OB and you can just see the surfers frantic to catch every wave.
