I hear Steamtown's running a re-dedication excursion to East Stroudsburg to re-dedicate the Dansbury Depot. The power will be Reading FP-7's 902 and 903. In my opinion, 3254 would be better looking. Or the Lackawanna F-3 units because the Lackawanna was the railroad that used the depot.
never realy intersted in 2317 but it is a good locing locomotive and probly it eill be great if she hauled AMTRACK Baggage cars and probly be a backup train of one of the Electric trains went oput a perfect replacement train for broken electric trains
actualy the 2317 is stil runing. the othor 2 wil be done in aprox 5 years and no the big boy is not part of steamtowns colection it is privately owned although the curves ARE WIDE ENUF to fit the big boy it would take millions of dolars to get runing and permission from the owner.I think the main concern would be weight if they wer to get the big boy runing (witch their un fortunitely not planing)
@mdurdan 2317 is getting taken out of commission due to the 15 year inspection that is a Federal Law and thus the 2317 will be in rebuild for the foreseeable future. With Baldwin 26 being the next engine to be rebuilt, 2317 is likely to be finished behind 3713, then and only then, would they consider rebuilding any other locomotives. It's the understanding of many that we will not likely see Boston and Maine 3713 much sooner than 2012.
@Giants02122 I like how Strasburg seems to get around that rule. The story is the same as its always been: if you want to see consistently great steam, go to Strasburg. 4 operating locomotives and no annoying corporate trackage right issues.
@tachikoma747 The rule is a Federal Law. It was explained to me best by the head shop man Will at Steamtown. It's basically a 5 year rebuild, 1472 days if you ran the locomotives every day. No one operates their trains for 5 years without resting them. As long as you leave 15 lbs. of steam in the locomotive you can still run a few days without using one of your 1472 "days". But, the exception is that every fifteen years you MUST have the locomotion re-inspected. Goes for everyone.
@Giants02122 I heard that after 3254 runs out of boiler time that they won't rebuild her and instead rebuild #759. But I can't remember where I saw that on youtube. They need to rebuild #759.
@mdurdan I don't know where you get your information but you are 95% wrong. The only thing you right on is that the Big Boy will not run again. The Big Boy is owned by Steamtown and always has been part of the same collection since Blount purchased her. There is no track left that can support the weight and curvature that the Big Boy needs to run. Even if there is some still out there it's no where near the location of the 4012.
They do, but from what i read its in pretty sad shape. The Railfan world would love to see a Big Boy in operation. But the mainlines are not what they used to be. The curves have been rebuilt for diesels, which don't need as wide of curves as large steam locomotives do. One reason railroads don't like steam is its hard on the track.
This is so cool I was on that train when you were taping it and I have a pile of pictures from the train. I was in the car right behind the tender and I seen myself hanging out the window
she'll be in yard service this season...comes out of operation in October to be literally torn apart for the big 5 year inspection...hope she makes it through..
So 2317 has to go through the 15 year inspect first, then I'm guessing 3254 has to go in not that much later... Boy they better get that B&M together fast!
It is, and just a little note....2317 is doing work 514 should be doing, which is doing work 26 should be doing! Oh wait, theyve been screwing around with 26 since '99....come on Steamtown pull it together!
Haha, well she was on haitus... She hadn't ventured out onto the mainline in several years prior to this, and is now subject to the same fate once again. (She is no longer mainline certified anymore, she was only for the short time in 2007, I believe.)
I'm not sure if I used the right terminology, but basically 2317 isn't allowed to go out onto the main because she has several minor issues from what I've been told.
i guess the big issue thats keeping her off the main is the fact that Management has refused to put the new tire set on, which was purchased several years ago...:/
I don't know about mechanical problems, it may be money money problems than anything else. They're dumping a lot of money into the Boston and Maine engine, and if there's anything wrong with 2317, I'm sure they are taking a back seat with her, and trying to get the B&M up and running so they still have two operable engines running on the mainline.
that may be the case, but 2317 is the younger of the two operational locomotives, and is in excellent shape for her age. In theory Steamtown would want to use money to keep it in shape to pull the excursions to take some of the load off 3254.
sounds like it makes sense but I just don't know why they wouldn't then be letting 2317 run more than 3254. Don't they have to be inspected every 15 years? Because if that's the case maybe they are running 3254 like mad because it might have to go into repair before 2317 does, and maybe that's the real reason.
whatever the case, I wish they'd just fix her and get her mainline certified for the 2009 Excursion season...and they should stop screwin around with her whistle! This one fits her perfectly...I'm not sure what that other one theyve put on her is, or how long its been on, all i know is I dont like it...

Pretty engine for a Canadian. Not to fond of that tank in front of the smokestack, but if I was there in person, I would really fall in love with that engine. It's a dieing shame they don't run steam anymore.
What do you mean "pretty for a canadian engine"? us Canadians built some of the best looking engines out there. and the feed water heater in front of the stack looks good and gives the engine a tougher look. but then again everybody has their own opinion, and mine is that the 2300's and the 2800's were some of the best engines ever built!
Yeah, you're right about the tank, but I still prefer a hidden feedwater tank. I think it looks awkward sometimes. Sorry don't get mad, but I still prefer American engines because they were apart of my home. My favorite steam engine is Southern Railroad 4501. But I guess the Canadian engines were better though.
I worked at WDAU/WYOU when Steamtown was a sideshow without a main attraction. I remember standing in the weedfilled roundtable doing an on-camera piece and then coming back years later to see the museum up and the roundtable operating. This brings back memories. Thanks!

Oh Yeah! CP Pacific sounds 10 times better than CN Mikado hands down! I love Canadian Pacific and Toronto Hamilton and Buffalo Ry. the TH&B was own by NYC and CP and the biggest steamers TH&B had was 2 2-8-4's which are scrapped in 1953 and I just wonder how they sound back then. Thank you very much for posting this video. Very thing about this video made my day. :D
Now that is why I love steam engines. They are majestic as they go down the tracks, and they look and sound much more beautiful than the diesels do. Long live steam engines! May you never leave us.
I have a question I've been meaning to ask for a while. Does Steamtown own the tracks they run on, or are they owned by the state or the Canadian Pacific or what?
Steamtown does not own the track, I am not sure who does, but I think Norfolk Southern has their hands in there somewhere. I hope someone more knowledgeable can jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong.
Excellent video as always, Joe! #2317 looked and sounded fantastic, and you did a magnificent job capturing some of the best runbys in your video. Good thing the sun stayed out as long as it did!
Believe it or not, I got to climb all over that engine when it was in the round house in need of new tires. It was part of the rail camp experiance. Glad 2 C it up and running again.
was this the only excursion she performed in this short period of operations between overhauling?
