@GazzerHST is there any need for the language? Its not our fault that your railway knowledge is so limited. My young son is watching this video thank you.
As anyone who's been in an emergency brake epplication knows, damn, the force of them can be extreme. I've seen people go flying, literally, in my years. xD
@bus140808 These Virgin boys get paid more than that. Just over 50 grand i think. very responsible job driving these trains but technology has made life a lot easier for the driver of today, make no mistake.
Working as a guard on these trains day in, day out, they stop very very quick. Scarily, in fact when you do 125mph - 0mph it;s suprisingly quick. You just need to get ready for the BANG as you halt. then get ready for the smell of brakes.Fortunately it's probably happended to me less than 10 times in 7 years and the only causes were 'tilt' dropping out on 221's usually Stafford to Crewe @125 and signal reversion due to 'the little orange men' on the S&T!

I was quite astonished it came to a stop that quickly - must have been doing at least 80mph past the TPC 158 standing at the platform, and yet it came to a stand still just slightly past the end of the platform.
The brakes were smoking - I'm surprised they weren't on fire!
Trains do emergency brake applications like this every day of the week for various reasons..... why the big deal...
and as for the quote " If it was me, I'd be running across the tracks and making sure everyone was ok. then again I don't work for the railways" - this is probably why you dont work for the railway.... running across lines just because the train stopped like that....
@4fsake Yep, trains have two braking systems, AWS which applys the breaks if the driver doesn't acknowledge which aspect (green, yellow, red) is shown in the signal and TPWS. These apply the breaks automatically when the train is going too fast on approach to a signal of if the train passes the signal at red.

Whats really weird is that the train guys on the Class 158 didn't seem that bothered that the Class 221 made an emergency stop.... I assumed one of guy was a station staff? If it was me, I'd be running across the tracks and making sure everyone was ok. then again I don't work for the railways. Imagine a cup of coffee and a nice looking lady sitting in front of you as you face forward direction!!! ....... mmmmmh!!!!
@skbworld2008 No it is not the Euston line, Northalleton is on the Kings Cross line. By the way the Euston line has been upgraded so there ere not as many delays as there used to be, but while the Euston line (WCML) was being upgraded there were many delays due to lots of maintenance.
that was a ripper cath. I have never seen anything pull up that fast beofre and she was hiking too. I agree sounded sick when it left. What about the orange coats
no, the signal returned to red as he was approaching, for all he cares the points might have switched against him, he had to stop immediately. So, he slows and gives the tone as he approaches the light.
In the UK we have ATP on certain trains but it is not a legal requirement .ATC is only used on HighSpeed 1 services running at 140mph however it will be used on the new Hitachi SuperExpress trains being built for introduction on the two prinicpal Main Lines from 2013.ATC and ATP are principally the same except ATP only reduces speed and does not bring the train to a halt. However all trains are fitted with dead man handles incase the drives falls asleep and applies the emergency breaks.
Does this line (or others) have ATC (automatic train control)? In the US on commuter railroads like the LIRR, if the operator fails to acknowlege the ATC sounder, or runs a stop signal, the brakes will get dumped into emergency.
The current UK systems are:- Dead Man Handle, (AWS) automatic warning system, (ATP) Automatic Train Protection - only on some routes and (TPWS - on the whole network ) Train Protection Warning System - The TPWS would have put the brakes on emergency if the driver hadnt already done so! (This system is similar ATC but less automatic). The UK will soon be upgrading to European Train Control System (ETCS - In use on HS1/2) a in cab system which will allow linespeeds to be increased above 125mph.
This 'Dead Man Handle' you are referring to is actually called 'DSD', standing for 'Drivers Safety Device'. On most UK mainline rolling stock, it consists of a Foot Pedal which must be constantly depressed by the driver and then when a 'Vigilance' alarm sounds, it must be released & re-depressed at a preset interval (Every 60secs +/- 2 secs on a HST for example) If the pedal is released or is not reset, a Brake Application occurs. It is more commonly known as 'Viglance' or a 'Dead Mans Pedal'.
It is instead getting 'ERTMS' which stands for 'European Rail Traffic Managment Systems'. It is a differant system from ETCS/ATC.
You are also forgetting DRA 'Drivers Reminder Appliance' , 'TPWS +' & the 'Tripcock' saftey system used by the London Underground & Chiltern Railways DMUS.
