I want to switch but I cannot get my toshiba to factory default because I do not have the recovery disk! Does linux install automatically overwrite windows bringing my PC to factory default like what will happen in the case if I were to install 7 over vista? All my files are already backed up, just waiting for right solution
Hope that someone can help. I've been trying to install Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I want to replace XP on an old computer. When I try to install I get an error message that says something like ‘ENN: Error reading xeclur 9294’ in green across the screen. It comes up a number of times while it’s loading and the number at the end is different on each line. CD seems to speed up and slow down. Tried the following: slow burn on cd, changed things on f6, try OS without installing & I have checked the md5sum.
Installing anything onto Ubuntu that doesn't install from the Software Centre will make you want to blow your fucking brains out. So after you figure this out from whatever situation you're in, you'll have that to look forward to.
@caolanr8 linux is subdivided into different distributions each tries to provide specific needs OUT OF THE BOX, like ubuntu, is grea for noobs, linux mint is for me by far easier , but any way ... Suse is the best for offices or bussiness and ultimate edition which comes with a ton of games , one of the best choises for gamers; but the cool thing is that YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE ANY FOR YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS!!!

@Penduluman Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux. There is no "original" distribution of Linux. Linux is just a kernel, the heart of the Operating System. There are many distribution like Ubuntu. Lots of things are different in various distributions. You should watch a video about them and try them.
P.S. If you have to ask this question, you should try Ubuntu. It is easy and awesome!
@Penduluman gnome is a desktop environment. Ubuntu uses gnome. Pretty strange, huh? This is the main thing I like about Linux. Several desktop environment, several file login manager, several file browser etc. In short, the GUI you see in Ubuntu is gnome. Well, most of the time!
I don't think there should be much difference, except that you won't get questions about deleting and preserving old install.
Have you tried it ? letting the install guide you ?
Most installs will select the most appropriate selections for you, and if you are unsure just click next ;-) and it will make a good mainstream installation with most common applications .. you can then alter it afterward :)

okay so like i have a currupted vista os on a laptop and i want to know if theres any way i can get linux or any other os on it to make it run programs again atleast so anyone know something that can help me?
well .. running (PC-)games may not be the best for Ubuntu for some technical reasons, reasons which make it better for other things. Ubuntu is a fast, small mainstream distro.

Hi, I'm totally new to linux. I've just bought a new laptop and am planning to explore the world of linux with my old one! I'm not great with computer stuff but am interested and want to learn more. I just wanted to say that I've checked out your website and it's really helpful. It will help me to avoid posting too many stupid questions on the discussion boards. Thanks very much!
I had Vista ( Never froze up) on my tablet pc and now I have Ubuntu and now my pc freezes up and I have to take out the battery to restart. Any ideals why this is happening
thanks for vid..was about to bin my old laptop as windows stopped working & had no disk. installed linux working great now..really easy to do as well once you get going
You can temporarily boot it using a virtual drive (ISO Mounting Program). It'll be just like if you burnt the ISO to a CD or DVD.
I would recommend using a virtual PC though if you want go about it this way. Download either VMware Player or Virtual Box. I prefer Virtual Box, especially because it's free. Google one of these and you can learn about it pretty fast.
@tomeromero No Ubuntu can be loaded onto a usb drive although I would recommend burning the ISO image onto a cd. Make sure you download a free image burner like nero and that you burn an ISO image not a regular cd. U can also run it in a virtual machine from an iso I think I will just post a quick tut on this
has all the links including optional ones for if you want to download Nero and actually make the iso which isn't necessary if you have a vm. Hope it helps.
i started downloading ubuntu and left to use the bathroom, when i came back my computer restarted due to automatic windows update that i had been putting off, and now it is downloading much slower (estimated time 39 hrs) before it was alomost half done within a few min and considering its less than 1mg byte it very much worries me, and before i started downloading it again i searched my pc for the file and didnt find it so i went back to the site but fist downladed infrarecoder any help please?
@xxmrcoolmanxx i Agree lol vista has so many fucked issues that they should make a fucking command thats says "If you think vista is shit then Hold and press ctrl + alt B to make your computer explode!" I mean come one its to damn slow updates dont download right giving you problem making your computer slow and its just a pile of steaming shit
if you are talking about mounting the cd for use in a virtual machine, yes you can use an emulated cd image (loopback image) of the disc to install rather than burning the disc for installation in a vm.
If any of you really want to try this use (( Wubi - Ubuntu)) It's way easier than this. If you need help feel free to ask.
"You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application."

I made a partition on windows first and I had to make another due to copying your video. I had tryed other peoples methods and sent them a plead for help but no ones been kind enough to reply.
I think you can. I have on a usb drive a type of linux called Damn small linux (just in case my comp dies and I dont have the cds around) its only 512 mb and installs in literally 5 minutes, from start to finish.
When burning the CD it must be burned as an "image" not a simple data burn. Roxio will do this for you. I'm not sure about any burning software. I think this is one of the most overlooked instructions in all of linux, even ubuntu's instructions leave this out. Keep trying folks it's worth it !
When i try to do it a screen comes up with loads of things saying [OK] and then it says [starting bluetooth] and it stays there and nothing happens please help me!!!!
I tried to install Linux. I made a CD, chose to install it with all the different options (at different times, of course) and NONE of them work. It says Linux is installed, but it doesn't boot. Not even after I left it for more than an hour. I put in a request for a free Ubuntu CD.
Generally you don't need to install drivers under linux, everything just plugs and plays. Your motherboard and DVD should both be fine. If you want to play dvd movies you will need to add the dvd player codecs, info on doing that is on the ubuntu website.
Best advice - try it out and see. Most modern hardware is supported fine, but some cheapo-windows only based wifi cards and modems still don't work great unless you force it to use your windows drivers.
thanks for the videos, I tried installing the ubuntu i downloaded a long time ago ( 8.04) onto my pc and when I went for update there was a error so Im going to follow through with you on getting ubuntu 8.10

You can't install Linux on an external hard drive - how could it boot from it?
grub-install is the boot loader. As it can't boot from the disk, it will naturally have problems installing on it.
Please ask all questions on my website - please don't ask them here.

I tried to install Linux. I made a CD, chose to install it with all the different options (at different times, of course) and NONE of them work. It says Linux is installed, but it doesn't boot. Not even after I left it for more than an hour. I put in a request for a free Ubuntu CD.
Am I doing something wrong?

When I put the CD in the drive and reboot, none the the things in your video happen.
I'm confused.

he forgot to say that you need to burn an ISO image to the cd

I did that. Anyway, I got it all up and running. I used Wubi.

will the drivers for my motherboard dvd plaayer etc.. work with linux?

Generally you don't need to install drivers under linux, everything just plugs and plays. Your motherboard and DVD should both be fine. If you want to play dvd movies you will need to add the dvd player codecs, info on doing that is on the ubuntu website.
Best advice - try it out and see. Most modern hardware is supported fine, but some cheapo-windows only based wifi cards and modems still don't work great unless you force it to use your windows drivers.
