  • I want to switch but I cannot get my toshiba to factory default because I do not have the recovery disk! Does linux install automatically overwrite windows bringing my PC to factory default like what will happen in the case if I were to install 7 over vista? All my files are already backed up, just waiting for right solution

  • Soap Mactavish I thought you died QQ

  • dude it took hours to download... but now i tried to install, but then some error happened when i was installing. plz help!

  • Hope that someone can help. I've been trying to install Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I want to replace XP on an old computer. When I try to install I get an error message that says something like ‘ENN: Error reading xeclur 9294’ in green across the screen. It comes up a number of times while it’s loading and the number at the end is different on each line. CD seems to speed up and slow down. Tried the following: slow burn on cd, changed things on f6, try OS without installing & I have checked the md5sum.

  • is it also possible to download and install linux to/from an external hard drive?

  • You should get a better microphone. Or speak up.

  • Installing anything onto Ubuntu that doesn't install from the Software Centre will make you want to blow your fucking brains out. So after you figure this out from whatever situation you're in, you'll have that to look forward to.

  • can i revert?

  • wats ubuntu

  • @caolanr8 linux is subdivided into different distributions each tries to provide specific needs OUT OF THE BOX, like ubuntu, is grea for noobs, linux mint is for me by far easier , but any way ... Suse is the best for offices or bussiness and ultimate edition which comes with a ton of games , one of the best choises for gamers; but the cool thing is that YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE ANY FOR YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS!!!

  • my windows 2000 pc is F8 i screwed sumthing on it up and now theres no start menu or desktop with icons

  • @hsc59psn switch to linux , it is way to hard to screw it up plus if you do you can boot from a live cd

  • @jxoesneon i did but it was too hard to use bcuz i couldnt find stuff like skype for linux

  • haha hooray for emulating!!

  • GET A WINDOWS!

  • Whats the difference between Linux and Ubuntu Linux?

  • @Penduluman Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux. There is no "original" distribution of Linux. Linux is just a kernel, the heart of the Operating System. There are many distribution like Ubuntu. Lots of things are different in various distributions. You should watch a video about them and try them.

P.S. If you have to ask this question, you should try Ubuntu. It is easy and awesome!

  • @eyeLikeLinux what is gnome than?

  • @Penduluman gnome is a desktop environment. Ubuntu uses gnome. Pretty strange, huh? This is the main thing I like about Linux. Several desktop environment, several file login manager, several file browser etc. In short, the GUI you see in Ubuntu is gnome. Well, most of the time!

  • Is there a guide on how to install linux on a completely new pc (no OS installed)?

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperxSharpxShooter

I don't think there should be much difference, except that you won't get questions about deleting and preserving old install.

Have you tried it ? letting the install guide you ?

Most installs will select the most appropriate selections for you, and if you are unsure just click next ;-) and it will make a good mainstream installation with most common applications .. you can then alter it afterward :)

If you need the media get a friend to get it for you or ship from ubuntu

  • tnQ dude your the best

    subbed :D

  • Ubuntu sucks, I'd recommend Dream Linux to newbies because it's super fast and comes with Java and Flash plus it's based on Debian.

  • lol at esperanto option.

  • I downloaded mine...and it wont go to the boot menu..

  • okay so like i have a currupted vista os on a laptop and i want to know if theres any way i can get linux or any other os on it to make it run programs again atleast so anyone know something that can help me?

    please.. :o

  • ubuntu linux sucks, hard, im a gamer and i have to say pc all the way

  • @MWproductions555

well .. running (PC-)games may not be the best for Ubuntu for some technical reasons, reasons which make it better for other things. Ubuntu is a fast, small mainstream distro.

It will do good for many peeps who "only" need things like internet-surf, office/mail and other general stuff, but if you want it to do more "hard" things, it needs some tweeks.

I'm playing wow on my suse, and it performs even better than on my win7 ;-)

Find the distro that fit YOUR purpose :-)

  • are linux and ubuntu the same thing or what? im looking to install the linux that developers etc use and all i can find is many different variations of linux and ubuntu with other names such as "zorin OS"

  • Hi, I'm totally new to linux. I've just bought a new laptop and am planning to explore the world of linux with my old one! I'm not great with computer stuff but am interested and want to learn more. I just wanted to say that I've checked out your website and it's really helpful. It will help me to avoid posting too many stupid questions on the discussion boards. Thanks very much!

  • OK FOR EVRY1. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE LIKE ME AND EXTRACT THE ISO FILE WITH WINRAR AND THEN BURN THE FILES IN THE FOLDER TO A DVD.

  • cool guid ethanks

  • Helpful tutorial. Thanks! And by the way your accent is awesome!

  • ooboontoo

  • I had Vista ( Never froze up) on my tablet pc and now I have Ubuntu and now my pc freezes up and I have to take out the battery to restart. Any ideals why this is happening

  • so... linux is like windows vista? like, i dont mean that linux is simaler to windows or anything, i mean, its a operating system right?

  • yes linux is an operating system

  • Yeah, Linux is just the kernel of Ubuntu, and it's a seperate operating system

  • @TheBestOnlineGamer

Its operating system, more stable, more configurable and better than windows but not for gamers.

  • Can you Boot Linux by using a program to mount ISO files?

  • You can install Linux 2 ways, using virtualbox/vmware to mount the iso and install on a virtual drive or burning onto a disk and booting it that way.

  • You can temporarily boot it using a virtual drive (ISO Mounting Program). It'll be just like if you burnt the ISO to a CD or DVD.

I would recommend using a virtual PC though if you want go about it this way. Download either VMware Player or Virtual Box. I prefer Virtual Box, especially because it's free. Google one of these and you can learn about it pretty fast.

    Best of luck.

  • ya no i guessing you can but how do you run poweriso while your out of the os?

  • i have just tried it and i'm very impressed

  • how do i open it man it wont open i even put on cd not work ffs

  • So if u cld help tht wkd be great

  • cool video, I have been experimenting with linux for a long time now. My personal favorits are tinycorelinux and Macpup linux =)

I also really like Elive and the E-17 window manager tho... anyway nice vid!!!

  • hey i must put the ubuntu on a cd ? or directly run it by click on it to run and follow the steps??

  • @tomeromero No Ubuntu can be loaded onto a usb drive although I would recommend burning the ISO image onto a cd. Make sure you download a free image burner like nero and that you burn an ISO image not a regular cd. U can also run it in a virtual machine from an iso I think I will just post a quick tut on this

  • @Darkwatersecurity ok... thank you :)))

  • @tomeromero

    Posted the vid.

has all the links including optional ones for if you want to download Nero and actually make the iso which isn't necessary if you have a vm. Hope it helps.

  • @tomeromero burn the image to cd or dvd and boot your pc via cd

  • thank you BlingStunna..!!! :)))

  • so, u need windows prior to installing Ubunto?? That sucks! Is there anyway i can install it to a wiped hard drive?

  • No, you don't need windows at all. This video is for people that have windows and want to keep windows as well as Ubuntu

  • @gnu2tux and how to install linux WITHOUT windows???

  • i hate linux and how im so unlucky that it doesnt support my internet connection type, so i can use it=(

  • what type do u have?

  • UBuntu 9.04

  • he new ubuntu 9.10 is really fast. its faster then windows 7.

  • I got a couple of questions. First, du you have to Partition your harddisk to install Ubuntu?

Second, can i remove the partition later without reinstalling the computer?

  • Yes, yes.

  • Okay then, two more, How do i remove The 2nd partition, and can i use the HP recovery partition to re-install vista if i remove it from my PC?

  • for now im going to download ubuntu using another computer

  • i started downloading ubuntu and left to use the bathroom, when i came back my computer restarted due to automatic windows update that i had been putting off, and now it is downloading much slower (estimated time 39 hrs) before it was alomost half done within a few min and considering its less than 1mg byte it very much worries me, and before i started downloading it again i searched my pc for the file and didnt find it so i went back to the site but fist downladed infrarecoder any help please?

  • sorry but vista is the most fail thing ever

  • @xxmrcoolmanxx i Agree lol vista has so many fucked issues that they should make a fucking command thats says "If you think vista is shit then Hold and press ctrl + alt B to make your computer explode!" I mean come one its to damn slow updates dont download right giving you problem making your computer slow and its just a pile of steaming shit

  • @xxmrcoolmanxx yeah it's what made the stock market crashed i'm sick of it...

  • I'm going to install to a Aspire One netbook. I can boot from USB flashdrives so can I install this from my USB dongle?

  • will this be faster than xp coz i have an old computer i am going back to (new 1 broke needs repair) j.w thanks ...spec is shit 512ram :O:(

  • if you are talking about mounting the cd for use in a virtual machine, yes you can use an emulated cd image (loopback image) of the disc to install rather than burning the disc for installation in a vm.

  • Can you just mount the image on an emulated CD drive (using Daemon tools or PowerISO) instead of burning the info onto a disc?

  • Is it possible to Burn it to a Flash Drive?

Or will the Computer not read it upon Restart?

  • you need a bios that can reboot from flash drives

  • Erg, so just go with the disk and everything will be alright?

  • How can i bernn linux on dvd?

  • If any of you really want to try this use (( Wubi - Ubuntu)) It's way easier than this. If you need help feel free to ask.

"You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application."

  • will this git rid of windows or can you swich to lenux and back?

  • Good one. If you want some freelancing work in linux, you may like to join eZdia.

eZdia provides you several way you can offer freelancing works.

  • which is the best operation system of linux?

  • ubuntu :]

  • Are you sure that linux is for pc????Cause I thought that it's for laptops

  • PC = Personal computer.

A laptop is a personal computer (PC). A desktop is a PC. A netbook, a sub-notebook, a notebook and a tablet are all types of PC's. Linux works on them all.

In fact, Linux works on Macintosh computers as well.

I don't know where you heard that Linux is for laptops only, that's very, very wrong.

  • so I can install Linux ubuntu anywhere in my laptop and in my PC (keyboard mouse screen e.t.c.......yes?

  • if you dont know the difference between a laptop and a pc than you shouldnt be watching this. a laptop is a kind of pc. even a mac is a pc of some sort

  • laptops could be pc or mac or linux

  • w8 a sec...Linux is an operation system like windows and mac right?

  • Yes. It's an operating system.

  • Thanks for the tutorial, but I am having abit of trouble. I'm trying to put Linux on my external harddrive. I followed your steps but when it's installing it gets stuck on 94% and says "executing 'grub-install (hd0)' failed. This is a fatal error."

I made a partition on windows first and I had to make another due to copying your video. I had tryed other peoples methods and sent them a plead for help but no ones been kind enough to reply.

    Thanks in advance

  • You can't install Linux on an external hard drive - how could it boot from it?

grub-install is the boot loader. As it can't boot from the disk, it will naturally have problems installing on it.

Please ask all questions on my website - please don't ask them here.

  • I think you can. I have on a usb drive a type of linux called Damn small linux (just in case my comp dies and I dont have the cds around) its only 512 mb and installs in literally 5 minutes, from start to finish.

  • When burning the CD it must be burned as an "image" not a simple data burn. Roxio will do this for you. I'm not sure about any burning software. I think this is one of the most overlooked instructions in all of linux, even ubuntu's instructions leave this out. Keep trying folks it's worth it !

  • Couldn't u just mount the image?

  • prob ill try it out thx

  • You forgot to mention to burn the Iso as an image...

  • it downloads as a image, all you have to do is burn it to the disc

  • I have both linux and windows,And they seem fine to me

  • When i try to do it a screen comes up with loads of things saying [OK] and then it says [starting bluetooth] and it stays there and nothing happens please help me!!!!

  • I tried to install Linux. I made a CD, chose to install it with all the different options (at different times, of course) and NONE of them work. It says Linux is installed, but it doesn't boot. Not even after I left it for more than an hour. I put in a request for a free Ubuntu CD.

    Am I doing something wrong?

  • When I put the CD in the drive and reboot, none the the things in your video happen.

    I'm confused.

  • he forgot to say that you need to burn an ISO image to the cd

  • I did that. Anyway, I got it all up and running. I used Wubi.

  • will the drivers for my motherboard dvd plaayer etc.. work with linux?

  • Generally you don't need to install drivers under linux, everything just plugs and plays. Your motherboard and DVD should both be fine. If you want to play dvd movies you will need to add the dvd player codecs, info on doing that is on the ubuntu website.

Best advice - try it out and see. Most modern hardware is supported fine, but some cheapo-windows only based wifi cards and modems still don't work great unless you force it to use your windows drivers.

  • well, there is a way to run it in live mode off of a external hard disk, but i dont know if that is particularly what you had in mind..

i havent heard of installing straight from a hardrive though

  • thanks for the videos, I tried installing the ubuntu i downloaded a long time ago ( 8.04) onto my pc and when I went for update there was a error so Im going to follow through with you on getting ubuntu 8.10
