Good this series has so many cool moments going for this, because as a paleontologist, this episode is kinda annoying. Oh well, it's just a show.

Now that someone mentioned it, conservation of mass is pretty much just a theory where all scientific formulas and conclusions are based upon. Even if that machine can somehow make the creature bigger or smaller without concerning the quantitative composition of their bodies, it can still make sense. I mean, do you have a machine that shoots rays that forces living things to evolve or de-evolve? For example, gravity is a mystery itself. We just learn to accept it and build laws around it.
