Because in this movie, there are multiple universe's and each one has individuals that are related(you can tell because they look alike). Each time an individual travels to another universe and kills they're incarnation, they gain that incarnations strength and speed. Yu Law was a cop that was tasked with ensuring that these universe's remained in balance until one day he was forced to kill a variation of himself.

This is a big no-no with the police force he works with and eventually he battles his last variation which also gathers the same strength and speed from the slain variants.
