  • Nice video, I happen to have a similar old model. BUT try to find a thermostat made in USA. I didn't at either HD or Lowes. And some had energy star logo & some didn't despite being same models.

  • I knocked my thermostat off the wall by mistake :(

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 I turned mine down too far, and it snapped right off. I found that by taking the cover off, I can manually turn the dial...but I have no idea what the temperature setting is. Time to switch it per this video. I had the old mechanical dial, and it would be nice to have a programmable one that turns on while I am still comfy cozy under the covers about 10 minutes before getting up for my shower.

  • How ever u like to install it as long as u could reach it

  • In the video the thermostat is located 60" above the floor, but I believe it should be 48". Could someone confirm the proper height a thermostat is to be located? I'm from Vancouver BC, Canada and am having a hard time getting an answer. Thanks.

  • Loved it! I can do that myself, and I'm a girl! :D

  • ahhhhhhhhh, the beauty of youtube ---

i was about to replace the whole unit cuz of my ignorance.

turns out all i had to do is change the batteries to make the unit work. lol

yes: live and learn - with youtube and even home depot

  • I bought my LED GU10's (285 lumen) "Super Bright" from a UK based LED supplier (energybrite)... I bought my own, my sisters and my dad's (50) @ £5.50... I am a Happy Chap :-) Thank you for your info and highlighting to me the benifts and cost saving... eddie

  • does anyone know where the wires need to be connected if you do not know what letter they were on?

  • last time i tried to install one of these i forgot to mark the wires......long story short....carrier guys came out and installed a new system cause i shorted out something major! old units were 15 years old anyways....live and learn.

  • I hate digital thermostats. I mean, I took calculus in school, but I can never get my digital thermostat to work!

  • I would have left the old thermostat. I have a regular non programmable thermostat. When I get up, I turn the heat up, when I leave, I turn it down. When I get home, I turn it back up, then back down when I go to bed. I am saving money, and saving even more because I am not spending MORE money on a programmable thermostat that is not needed.

  • Saving energy is the first priority. It is not only good foor the environment, but a lower tempretature is also more healthy

  • I guess if the wires fall behind the wall, you're screwed, huh?

  • @mikebrady01 yup

  • Thanks for posting this video. My brother is tired of doing handy work for me, so I'm gonna tackle this one myself!!

  • thanks home depot for the tip

  • programmable thermistats are pieces of shit I hate Mine

  • Good easy step by step video.

  • Nice, you may want to mention that you don't really need to double-check the wires for voltage (extra safety check) after turning off your AC and Heat....because it's only 24V which won't hurt you...I believe I'm correct on this right? I was going to double-check to make sure the wires were safe with a multimeter but I guess you don't need to in this case (I don't know jack about electricity)

  • @marblemacchiatto

you should be more concerned with amperage imo.. i am not a certified electrician but i know that amperage is the killer not voltage..

  • @tiprodoc True--amperage or flow of electrons does the actual damage but the amperage will increase dramatically as the voltage goes up. Touch 24 VAC with one hand and ground the other to a water pipe and you'll feel it. Touch 277 VAC with a hand and ground the other and you'll likely be dead. At extreme voltages such as lightning people have been known to explode from the rapid vaporization of body fluids. Voltage makes a huge difference.

  • Great video! My wife and I are installing our own programmable thermostat this evening and this really helped.

Question though. Did you keep the tape, which marked the letter code of the corresponding terminal, attached after installing the new base plate of the programmable thermostat?

  • I installed a Rite Temp thermostat back in the winter. It seemed to work ok, except my heat strips were slow to come on. Then when the weather got hot, the AC part didnt work at all! I consulted a HVAC man, and he installed a Honeywell. It didnt cost me much more than the price of the unit. And it works just fine. So, just save yourself a headache, and chancing damaging something, just hire a HVSC to begin with.

  • Go with the SOLO 7-day programmable stat from Nuheat, it's so easy!

  • Good basic video. I like the step-by-step, and the man's voice is easy to listen to. Thank you for the video.

  • @KasinH Do you think that I can change mine without helping .. ?

I meant that should I be professional on these things to do it ?

  • Thank goodness i came across this website, as i sit here freezing from uninsulated windiws and doors while my upstairs is 100 degrees, I decided to give my cheap landlord a break and get a more modern thremostat and fix it myself. Thanks for the tip.

  • How would the thermostat effect the heat on a first floor apt if the thermostat is on the top floor

  • will it still work if your power gose out.. I have a floor gas furnace and when the power gose out the old thermostat like the one he took off the wall the old type.. Mine never works when the power is off becasue it need's so much volts i guess.. but will the new one he is installing i wonder if it will turn my furnace on when the power gose out thanks alot.

  • The thermostat may work when the power goes off, but the furnace itself would need electricity to operate its fans, even if it's a gas furnace. (The gas combustion provides heat, but electricity is needed to operate the fans to blow the heat throughout your home.) In my own case, I have a gas furnace, but have a small propane heater (one of the ones rated safe for indoor use) to use during power outages.

  • Mine dose not have fans.. mine is an old gas floor furnace with no fans just heat from the gas fume thats it.. but i was told that the thermostat has a transformer on it. And it has 24volts.

  • Ritetemp=service calls for me! Thanks Homer.

  • What a poor how to video. There are too many variables that are not mentioned. Unless you have an identical setup to the system in the video you may find yourself in a lot of trouble.

  • make sure you get a good t-stat(white rodgers), not a piece of shit rite temp or hunter.

  • I've replaced a lot of the rite temp thermostats. Customers call cause the furnace isn't working and they mention that they just replaced the thermostat a few weeks or months ago. And it turns out to be a rite temp brand or some other generic piece of crap. The customer saved a few dollars the first time but then they have to pay for a different thermostat and my time. Anytime you see those little clip and pin systems like the rite temp uses stay away from them. Junk.

  • Very good. Thanks.

  • Help! I took the old therm off w/o labeling the wires1st! Do I have to read the manual? I'd rather watch another video!

  • HAHA!!!

  • wa if i don't have 4 wires but 2, and i only have a white one and a black one? thanks for help

  • same here, i have the black and white wire too. they only show videos for the new pieces of crap houses, what about the old ones?

  • Thanks. That's what i need

  • if only mine had 4wiers

  • I watched and installed my own thermostat, piece of cake. Thanks Home Depot.

  • Yeah!

  • how much does this thing cost

  • From 45$ to 345$.

The best on the market is the LUX TS9000TS. Less expensive on Ebay.

  • great vid...

  • it would be great if every house had up to date wiring like this, but some people have line voltage at their stats and they need to be especially careful. you can very easily cause harm or damage. this is why work like this is best done by a licensed professional, who is warm-air certified.

  • to anyone who does this, i can take your old thermostats and give them the proper recycling. thanks for reading

  • must be working on a electric furnace

  • I want to try this.. I hope installing it is as easy as it is detailed here.

  • Most informative. Along with the instructions what came with my new programmable thermostat, this gave me the confidence that I was doing it correctly.

  • thank you, it was very helpful
