This was the first song I ever heard by them, on a mix tape in 1986. I immediately went out and got the "Heyday" album and they've been one of my favorite bands ever since...and they continue to make good music today, after all these years.
It remembers me year 1987 when I went for a trip to the united state! I bought two albums on tape in Washington DC ("Heyday" from the Church and "That total Age" from Nitzer Ebb) and I drove from Washington DC to Miami-Florida with only these two tapes to listen to! Should I say that The Church were more "listen-able" for such a long trip! arf arf arf!
i really cant fathom the fact that these guys didnt get the commercial viability of The cure, Rem, or The Smiths. Echo was abit more popular, jesus and the mary chain too, but the church and the chameleons were totaly forgotten. its true that under the milky way was a minor hit, so was Reptile but, still, this band deserved more credential. At least they are still writting music.
Baylor University in the 80s....That was the HEYDAY of underground radio....at least in Waco Tx....The Spin, The Reivers, Cornpone, Caustic Death, Exodus, The Daylights, Locos Gringos, Cathouse, Man I miss those days...
In D.C. there used to be a good independent radio station, WHFS, that used to play lots of underground stuff. I remember many times hearing the Church. The 1980's version of that station is long gone, but well remembered. That is where I first heard the Church Early in 1986 about two months before they opened for Echo and the Bunnymen.
"Heyday" was an amazingly evocative album--one of the best I heard in the '80s and good music for any time. I loved the sound, the lyrics, and it did not hurt that when I was a teenager, their album covers were, um, easy on my eyes and so pasted on the wall over my bed! :) Seriously good music.
One of the greatest song never heard. It's unforgiveable to me that the Church struggle to even profit from touring these days. I wanna see a 87 year old Kilbey plucking that magical thumping bass line to Myrrh while (a hopefully beardless) Marty abuses his Rickenbacker and Peter...well what can you say about Peter? The guys just really doesn't seem to age and plays so beautifully and effortlessly. Oh and Tim! Thank you so much for resurrecting my favourite band of all time :-)
but i'd deffinetly include joy division & the cure!
although i wouldn't be able to choose
i love clan of xymox to even though they're completely different
do u have any other groups u can recall
that have a sound like these ?
since i'm 17 i never really got to expirience the 80's
but my dad saw about every groups there was to see since he worked in a record company & now i'm listening to the good old sound, rediscovering bands all the time. if any1 has some ..?
@simionTheOne Xymox was good, but jeez, the number of awesome alternative 80's and 90's bands is endless. Depeche Mode of course, but also bands like Lush, The Charlatans, The Stone Roses, Catherine Wheel, Jesus & Mary Chain, the list goes on and on.
this album, "heyday", is a pure melodic masterpiece...i've always been a big church fan...i would've liked the album to be a lil' less slick/production...but it still holds up & has relevancy as a whole...they went on to do other accomplished material...
how great's the re-occuring lyric..."you don't suppose there...be room in here...somewhere for me...i think i just need...someone's words to...reassure me"...classic...
steve has a lyrical moment like that on almost every album...great band...!
Great music....they were never superstars because it's not how the system works. In reality it doesnt matter because I've listened to their music for 25+ years, and most people(outside of Oz) have never heard of them.
i feel you, kieran. its a miracle i know of them. thankfully, eons ago (well, c. 1987) we had a radio station that played "underground", or "alternative" stuff like this, the Smiths, Echo & the Bunnymen, etc. the station lasted ONE YEAR. anyway, WXXP (shout out-- anyone?) had "reptile" in rotation. without that, i may have missed "under the milky way's" small ripple and ultimately this band entirely. the thought sends shudders through me. please hold me....
I found out about these guys from Allmusic Guide because I'm a big Bunnymen and Chameleons fan. luckily we have 2 independent record stores in town that stock alot of Church stuff and ended up buying most of it! in a way its good they're not so popular, music like this should be considered a treasure not to bue spoiled on mainstream radio
Though it's interesting that they "led" you to the Church because one would assume the Chams' are way more "obscure", while the Church had at least some commercial success over 20 years of consistent work.
Anyway it's all good. I put the Chameleons on top of the world...but love these guys, too.
Really...too bad Columbus did go...Not to get too political here, but...ahem...we probably wouldn't have the problem we do now in the world had Columbus just stayed in Spain.
haha...interesting point. but what kind of problems would we have if he DID stay there? i mean, the natives warred with each other. contact did cause them great pain, and extinction of some tribes, but in a cruel way, it may have been worse had the spanish not settled - ok! ok! CONQUERED. :)
If Columbus did stay in Spain there would be no "we" here. How would anyone know what the Native Americans would continue to be like had Columbus not come here? Yes, they may have warred with each other, but at least they knew how to live in their environment, with respect and conservation. Now all we have are Wal-Mart and K-mart and mini-marts....
really, with "respect and conservation"? did they bury their feces after a bowel movement? (thats not a rhetorical question). i dont think they lived in their environment with "respect". they just lived as best as they could, with what they had.
One of the best songs of the 80s and an accomplished, well-crafted and evocative album. Anyone serious about good music--alternative or otherwise--should check out this album. Steve Kilbey remains a stellar songwriter.
I'm firstly a total metalhead, but I've always loved this band. I bought Heydey on cassette when it came out, and it still holds up to this day. My favorite song from the album! Thanks
The greatest band ever. full stop. Heyday is 22 years old and still sounds like it was written yesterday. How these guys are not global superstars I'll never know.
What a song! And album too. Saw them in 1986 opening for Echo & the Bunnymen at theatre St-Denis in Montreal (probably one of the best show i saw). They opened with Myrrh (my greatest Church's song), i was conquered. They played Unguarded moments, a tune that i heard a couple of times on the radio, but i didn't know it was one of theirs and which i really liked. Great moments. Thank you guys!
In some ways, Hey Day was The Church at their finest. Starfish was a masterpiece but Hey Day had a certain kind of raw honesty to it. Still stands up well after all these years, doesn't it!
Thanks for posting this! I have been waiting eagerly for it. Heyday was a brilliant album: one of the best of its decade or any for that matter. As a girl in NorCal I listened to The Church on alt radio and then bought their records. I loved seeing them live in the late 80s. Steve Kilbey had intellectual lyrics and sultry if a bit jaded vocals so my sis and I were hooked.
I couldn't agree with you more. Heydey is one of my Top 5 all-time albums. I saw 'em in '85 when the opened for Echo and the Bunnymen at the State Theater in Detroit. They were touring in support of Heyday. So damn good! I just listened to this album on my way to work this morning--I hadn't heard it in a few years. I actually wept during some parts. Silly, I know. But true.... :)
Fantastic!! I saw Steve and Marty doing an aucoustic set back in the 90´s in a small venue in Sweden. They rocked even more without their rythm section and could really do justice to the vocal harmonies they laid down on their albums. Did they really smoke all that weed?
My soundtrack of the 80s! it is difficul to overestimate the impact of the HeyDay album on my life. its over 20 years since i heard this song first time but it still holds a magical spell over me. thanks a million for this steve! are you THE steve?
Awwww Marty is so cute... :-D

the arrangements were sublime and Steve has probally never sung better than on this album...
