Brush up on your history. Men have been protecting women since the dawn of the ages. It's in their codes of honor, its called "chivalry," the need to protect women and children no matter what the cost. To sacrifice yourself in the name of mother, wife, sister and/or daughter. To never strike a woman, or strike back at one because it is "dishonorable." Chivalry is to offer safety/security and protection. Like Prince Charming helps the "Damsel in Distress."
