What you people don't understand is that there were over 1500 people missing immediately afterward and if all those looking for someone knew where the Morgue was it would have been chaos, with probably more gawkers than people actually looking for a loved one. Being a storm chaser and actually not far away from that storm at the given time (near Siloam Springs) when it happened, I can agree with some media but not all. Yes the media screws things up from here and there. However they are able to get the word out about missing people by having them come on the air. I do agree that it goes too far sometimes but if they can help find one fathers son then that is one more body that no one else could have figured out.

I wouldn't want to walk past dead bodies trying to find her if she had been missing. Some of the bodies were so mangled that they weren't recognizable and others were in pieces. There had already been one case of mistaken identity and they were trying to prevent it happening again. Nobody should see that

Joplin was a nightmare after the tornado. We have never seen anything like that here. The police did the best they could for what training they have had. Emotions were high, people were frantic & then you had the ones just wanting to see gore show up, scam artists & those with their hands out for the free food n water. I saw a forensic car next to me n knew that the bodies could not have been in good shape if he was needed.
After going through katrina in nola and working in joplin, yes they needed to restrict access. Yes, 247webfag, there would have been drama. Many bodies werent very easy to identify. I saw the damage first hand. I know people got ripped up and people are very unreasonable during a time like that. I am a Joplin resident and these CNN reports piss me off. The coroner has stated that the tempory morgue consists of 4 or 5 refridgerated trailors. As a resident of Joplin, I am not out looking for this temporary morgue.
There is no conspiracy. Think about it...think real hard about why they wont let familys view the deceased. I spoke to a nurse yesterday who is working at the morgue. They need DNA to prove who is who because they only have BODY PARTS. They are asking for identification such as tattoos, piercings, birthmarks, etc.

Notice the first thing these guys said when the police asked what they were doing was "we're from CNN". Yeah, nobody here cares about CNN. What we care about is people driving around looking for dead bodies to take pictures of and hindering rescue/recovery efforts.
The press was purposely kept at the St. John's location, and it made a great backdrop to their stories so the press loved it, mainly to keep them out of the way. The "right to know" is just BS.

@rmadllo I lost a loved one in the storm, and I'm telling you right now, that's not at all how we felt. If the media could get there and find answers, then let them try. The media and CNN and whoever who think we were angry or frustrated towards weren't the people to blame. We wanted them to expose the situation so we could move the process along quicker. I just think you've got this all wrong.

@sarahowleyes : My daughter was injured in the tornado, and I had to search for her at Memorial Hall. It was a horrible experience to go from injured person to injured person looking for her. I wouldn't want to walk past dead bodies trying to find her if she had been missing. Some of the bodies were so mangled that they weren't recognizable and others were in pieces. There had already been one case of mistaken identity and they were trying to prevent it happening again. Nobody should see that

Joplin was a nightmare after the tornado. We have never seen anything like that here. The police did the best they could for what training they have had. Emotions were high, people were frantic & then you had the ones just wanting to see gore show up, scam artists & those with their hands out for the free food n water. I saw a forensic car next to me n knew that the bodies could not have been in good shape if he was needed.

After going through katrina in nola and working in joplin, yes they needed to restrict access. Yes, 247webfag, there would have been drama. Many bodies werent very easy to identify. I saw the damage first hand. I know people got ripped up and people are very unreasonable during a time like that. People in groups suck and will eff up anything so dont think police and morgue officials are trying to screw people when they really have to protect people from themselves a lot of times.

The morgue is probably half torn down and not a very safe place to be and its hard enough to handle a biological disaster with a bunch of dead bodies and chemicals while you're still taking new bodies in, because an unsafe half destroyed morgue is still the safest place to take the dead bodies. seriously? the organ would no longer be viable since the bodies have been dead for way to long of a period of time. with enough oxygen and blood flow they would be of no use. If they were to open up the morgue before there was enough time to search for missing people it would have created mass panic. There is no conspiracy. Think about it...think real hard about why they wont let familys view the deceased. I spoke to a nurse yesterday who is working at the morgue. They need DNA to prove who is who because they only have BODY PARTS. They are asking for identification such as tattoos, piercings, birthmarks, etc.
They are protecting the family and public from the grim reality of the situation.

@xccell While you are patting those cops on the back ask yourself which sounds more interesting to the headlines.... we went to the Joplin morgue or that we were restricted by police from going to the secret morgue located in Joplin. You go from a hundred eyes watching for a moment to 100,000 eyes watching for a week. If there is nothing malicious going on then you just asked for more attention, but if something is going on then it will be discovered.
