anyone that says that the pilot has no skill or that he skrewed up,... they don't know what is going on and the dynamics of flight and the skill required to attempt a landing in such situations and the proper response to surprise heavy crosswind. this is a skilled pilot whoever he is, saving the plane like that!
for anyone's information that is a DC 8 plane landing in ontario, california and this video is shown to new ups management personnel and pilots. the technicians tried loading this into the simulators after this incident and NOT ONE SINGLE PILOT has EVER been able to replicate this maneuver and make the aircraft climb back into the air. FACT!
pilot: wee i love drifting in the air. passengers: ahhhhhhhhhh who made that dam pilot in charge of this plane. winds: hehe i love trying to destroy planes. XD
They are trained to deal with crosswind gusts. Why do you think that commercial pilots spend so much time in the simulators? Look up B-52 crosswind landing. It is the only jet in the world that needs no special handling to land in a heavy crosswind.
You have to remember the DC-8 doesn't have leading edge slats, so it has a natural nose down attitude on landing. Looks like a normal go around to me.
He tried to drive the plane in to avoid another pass. He should have been flaring before he was even over the runway. The copilot was probably practicing landing.
Ok, no problem, we have a slight crossw....OH MY GOD, HOLY HELL, HIT THE THROTTLE HIT IT GODDAMMIT OH MY DEAR LORD!!!! whew! I think that "slight crosswind" was fairly severe...
@TheEgg185 There may be all that open desert, But you land on a runway, It could be surrounded by lava, It will not be any harder to land, I would like to see you try and land that :P
What do you mean "all that open desert"? It's not like they are going to be landing at any open area they can. They land on the runway... also they didn't "fuck up". They caught some severe crosswinds, and had to go around. A good pilot knows when to push it, and when to back off. This guy knew that he needed to back off, which makes him a good pilot.
@stickfigure1998 clearly you know nothing of airplanes. pulling up is exactly what not to do in that situation. you'll lost lift and stall the airplane and crash. the correct go-around procedure is full throttle and retract the flaps incrementally. pulling up does not make the airplane go up it makes it slow down. throttle is what makes it go up.
It would seem to me that based on the nose down attitude of the plane from 0:00 to 0:18 when they started the go-around that they were going too fast and the PIC was attempting to force the plane down. I believe landing nose wheel first would have ended in the plane being destroyed though, like the MD11 in Japan for example. (Also a UPS plane I think?)
Severe crosswinds - Santa Anna wind season - crew did an excellent job with recovery and rejected landing (wave-off/go around) procedures! UPS Airlines has perhaps the safest record of aircraft incidences!
Uhh, UPS only takes cargo, no passengers. It has also had a few crashes, the most recent one being the 747-400 they lost in the middle-east due to a cargo fire.
@legomovies64 which has nothing to do with the airline's safety record, only the nature of the cargo carried on board, that aircraft was literally months old.
I remember when this happened in the mid-late 90's ..... it was at Ontario airport which functions as an emergency airport for all the LA/OC area. It has very long runways, but as you can see have very nasty winds..... I used to live about 5 miles from there...great place to fly in and out of.
optimistsRUS's- You are correct in saying you aren't an expert. There is most definitely a strong crosswind from the left--on go around rudder is taken out and the aircraft (the venerable DC-8) flies into the relative wind. This was a strong crosswind and a properly flown approach by professional pilots. If it was a junior F/O flying, he or she is neither stupid nor lacking skill. Crewmembers at this level have years of experience and judgement. Seat position is determined by hire date.
Bear in mind this was probably Ontario airport CA during a raging Santa Ana condition, and Ontario during a strong Santa Ana is so windy you can barely stand, much less land an airplane.
Maybe you are not big enough to know that this was a cross-wind landing attempt and aborting the landing in such a situation is not unusual, it's rather smart to abort the landing than to crash.
I just watched it again, I was too quick to say "you're wrong", but in fact there was no cross-wind here. My apologies for attacking you. I am not an expert on aviation any way, but I think the approach wasn't right, you don't touch down the nose gear first. I wonder who was filming it and whether it was some kind of a test or if it was a stupid junior First Officer who made the landing attempt but the senior pilot took controls at the last moment...?
@optimistsRUS thats ok and see i think what happened was a severe tail wind whether at the last moment or not i dont know but they had to bring the nose down very far just to descend slightly and they really wanted to land i guess and when they pulled up so they didnt touch nose gear first they were forced pretty much into a missed approach because in fact if you look close even after they pulled the nose up and realize they are climbing they try to AGAIN push the nose dwn 2 land but thy couldnt
They avoided a crash by pulling up, right? What I was saying was that in the initial approach it seems to me that the altitude of the aircraft was too high and they descended very sharply to try to avoid a missed approach.
@optimistsRUS agreeded notice when the aircraft gets into ground effect its like its on a bubble and starts corkscrewing, notice also when flaps are deployed almost just befor touchdown , you would have though that would be miles back

@youronlysolution yeah but you shouldn't put the flaps all the way up, because they increase lift, which an airplane needs in order to fly.
