She's glorious. I love that she is a normal human being! As for pitch, you must take into consideration the genre of the music as well as her voice type. She is definitely not a Wagnerian soprano! Instead she has a lovely light lyric sound. Considering this scene was written for a dramatic soprano with a larger voice, Dawn did a fabulous job.
She does sing flat a few times, but it is actually the MUSIC OF MESSIAEN that makes it hard to sing: If you listen, she's singing the same note, and then all of a sudden it seems to sag just a tiny bit. WHY? Because the accompaniment underneath changes & all the cluster chords & their overtones in the orchestra start to do battle with her ear. That's why she can sing the same note over & over in tune, & then all of a sudden it's a bit flat - not because she doesn't KNOW how to sing!
This is St. Francois d'Assise of Olivier Messiaen, Peter Sellar's production in Salzburg with the unsympathetic Kent Nagano conducting. (Notice him just trying to BEAT while Dawn is showing him how she wants to do it artistically - it looks like he's trying to formulate a math equation!) Beautiful, and a lovely, SIMPLE lady - thus, the un-diva garb.
I think that she is a wonderful singer. I really love her voice. She is doing great and it is comforting to know that someone so talented has troubles as well when they sing.
Yes, Dawn Upshaw is married with an 18 year old daughter and 12 or 13 year old son. But she doesn't live in Chicago. She was raised and went to college in Illinois, but lives outside NYC with her husband and the two children. Check her bios. A lot of this information is given and even updated on the Wiki encyclopedia. Have fun.
Saint François d'Assise (Livret d'Olivier Messiaen, opéra commandé par Rolf Liebermann en 1975 pour l'Opéra de Paris Opéra en 3 actes et 8 tableaux) 1975 - création en 1983
Very pleasant to view even a fragment of a rehersal.
But i must say one thing : i still prefer a lot the Saint Fronçois made in Paris in 1983, with real background drawed by the author (Messiaen himself).
Why this choice of doing such a pastiche with screens ? For FUN it would be good, but for atmosphere, for me it's more funny that emoving !
I was in the production... you could see on the wall of screen "flowers" "water falls" and so... opposition between our wild and modern world and the poetic live of François :))

It's a shame the video cuts off in the middle of that phrase... it's a gorgeous section of the music!!!

Dawn Upshaw is the model musical artist. She struggles but at the same time is absolutely brilliant.

I'm so glad you posted this! It's so helpful to see a fraction of the crazy work that goes into perfecting a major role for a gig like this.

She is singing so flat!!!! No line to her singing. Anyone know what this opera is? I don't recognize it.
