Wouldn't have been the same with a different singer, words and melody, and of course the band playing along. At the end, it's a very well done masterpiece for a promo or whatever one would call it. And best of all, not one word mentioning the network, and nothing like "watch us because we're great and you like our channel" - just something to make you feel proud to be in Melbourne and be watching the channel. I recall seeing this on channel 7 melb. a couple years back on the 50th anniversary
The "Hello" campaign originated in Milwaukee, Wiscosnsin (WISN, channel 12) around 1977. It was a huge success and the idea was licensed to many stations across the United States. Go see the original - seach Hello Milwaukee.
This video is fantastic! As well as all of the other 'Hello Melbourne' promos of this era. Do you reackon they could ever bring it back today, it's way better than "Gotta love it." Oh Seven's the best AFL Broadcaster, hope they get the rights all to themselves like the good old days from 2011 onwards!!!
I met Frank Gari in 1984 It was Hello Boston or somthing back then, I bought the rights, rewrote the lyrics, Ivan Hutchinson conducted the arrangement. Frank Gari said it was the best version. Frank wrote Say Hello for Melbourne plus pulse of the city was the last before ATN took over the network promotion. Adelaide & Hobart used Say Hello too. John Slater HSV Promotion Manager 1983 - 1993
Actually WISN/Milwaukee, who happens to be WBAL/Baltimore's sister station, was the first station to use the "Hello" campaign, which was in 1977. WBAL and sister station WTAE/Pittsburgh followed afterwards.
Frank Gari of Gari Productions brought the Hello campaign to life...it is one of the most successful cammpaigns brought to television. Many stations used it for years, and then, some brought it back when they were celebrating 40-50 year anniversaries...really powerful, eh? The Osmonds did one of the Utah ads...we loved them both when I was but a wee child in Southwestern Colorado...I traveled to Calgary during this time and saw the Hello Calgary versions also
Actually it's the 1985 version. 1986 was the famous 'Say Hello' promo that was revived for the 50th anniversary celebrations at HSV while 'Pulse of the City' was used in 1987 before the 'national' (read: ATN) promos kicked in.
@toyatacarclub - Yes, the producer of this campaign moved to HSV7 from TVW7 where he'd created the Perth campaign

That's great. I like the last shot, you can see the old Gas and Fuel buildings on Flinders Street before they were pulled down.
