A handful of innocent peoples death is a small price of a mistake to pay if it makes you realize that it was wrong and make it up by helping the hero saving the entire world. You should pay more attention to the dialogues and storyplot.

@BoxedPchannel Pfft, F..k the blades and their stupid side quests of going killing dragons at their spots. I've already slain all dragons at the destinations at the point they can't put on my map. As well i've already mastered almost all the shouts in the game and got 17 souls to spare. The blades are no help to me. All they do is make me do stuff they're too big pussies to do themesleves. I ain't gonna kill the only dragon that has actually helped me throughout the game.

He's optional because you can choose whether or not you want to go to Esbern and Delphine in Skyhaven temple and accept the quest of killing Paarthurnax. Even IF you get the quest though, you don't have to follow through with it. You won't engage him in battle unless you say "The Blades want you dead"

When I got the quest to kill Paarthurnax I pretended I never got it and just never spoke to Esben or Delphine again. So Paarthurnax is still alive and no you do not have to kill him.

OR you can kill him, fast travel immediately before his skin vanishes, fast travel back, resurrect(pc only), fast travel immediately again so his body doesnt vanish. Then you fast travel back, quickly talk to him before his body starts to disinegrate/disappear, while your talking to him his skin disappears and he remains alive but as a skeleton....which in my opinion is even more bad ass!! and you complete the quest :) warning! if you dont start a convo in time his body will disappear.
