Ed gets stabbed. He's on the verge of dying when Sophie uses her power to save him. (She has a strange emblem on her hand that gives her power, it's a long story.) Unfortunately, she has already overused her powers and she doesn't have enough strength to do it safely. As a result, Ed survives, but Sophie falls into a coma.

There are multiple endings to the game, so what happens next is all up to the player.

I like the way this scene played out. You start out wondering what's with the heavy breathing, and then they hit you. It doesn't show Ed getting stabbed, just him gasping and the bloody knife. When he falls, there isn't a dramatic death fall complete with slo-mo. They kept it plain: he lowers his arms, drops to his knees, and falls forward. Sorry if my comment annoys someone, but I've seen this clip a few times now, and I finally realized how great a job they did on it.
