@fusionstar916: The Space Shuttle does not run on Fossil Fuels, and it launches much less than people drive, so even if it did release large amounts of CO2 and such it would have a minimal environmental impact.
@BerSerKer2k8 lol actually its evened out now ... cause the 3 valley damn in china saves so much water in it the water level sunnk by half an inch worldwide which made earth turn abit slower by 0.00016mph... funny science....
A Shuttle SRB uses ammonium perchlorate as the oxidizer (69.6% by weight), aluminum powder as the fuel, (16%), iron oxide (a catalyst, 0.4%), a polymer binder that holds the mixture together, (12.04%), and an epoxy curing agent (1.96%). Each SRB weighs approximately 580 metric tons at launch and develops 1,500 metric tons of thrust. The Shuttle generates more thrust than the first stage of a Saturn 5 and weighs about 1100 tons less than a complete Apollo Moon mission.
The test boosters are held down by very strong anchors. The last thing Morton Thiokol wants is a booster to break loose and head for another part of the state - or a neighbouring state...
Hey Mars. Thanks for all the detailed info. Brought back alot of memories of making solid rockets. One quibble: Unless I've gone senile, the shuttle DOES NOT produce as much power as the Saturn V first stage. The shuttle produces about 6.5 million pounds of thrust (2 SRBs and 3 SSMEs) to lift its 4.5 million pounds. The Saturn V S-1C first stage (with five F1 engines) produced 7.5 million pounds of thrust to lift that 6 million pound vehicle . (Hence the much slower liftoff.)
I know, its a new way to create rain. The rediculous thermals rise into the sky past the dew point carrying the dust particles and nox gass to form the rain drops, oh no thats acid rain, doh.
yeah I was there today too! Very cool to watch...and feel! I hear peacekeeper static tests have a stronger shock wave than RSRM. too bad I missed out on the last peacekeeper.

@fleshisthefever SUPER eco friendly, the saturn V takes 1 gallon to move up 5 inches, now thats efficient

how comes the booster is not flying away, how do they hold back so much power? can you please tell me?

@fluffyman15 Same way they keep the shuttle from tipping over at the launch pad - They use VERY large bolts.

Boron Potassium Nitrate pellets (BKNO3) are int he igniter, the fuel it self is mostly a hardened aluminum mixture.
