  • wow 7:05 look at the front of Jr's car xD

  • i don't care how old this race is, i still get excited watching it. :)

  • The sound of these restrictor plate engines... sexy todays resctricor plate cars, screaming beasts that sound terrible

  • I never realized how close Jeff was to winning this... Damn u waltrip!!

  • Does Mark Martin Crash at every super speedway?

  • Michael Waltrip is the worst driver in NASCAR with Two Daytona 500 Champions And 3 Daytona wins. LOL

  • Man those Monte Carlos look awesome!

  • 5:19 I love when Michael climbed out of the escape hatch.

  • now this is talladega racing, not this 2 car tandem crap

  • this is 100x better than the 2 car crap nowadays

  • I Love How Tony Always Seems to Come In The Top At the End Of The Race..

  • i was at this race...it was a good race

  • The sound, the racing, 4 and 5 wide all in a big wod coming to the checkerd. OMG I miss this stuff!!! We took for granted how awesome it was until we lost it. Hopefully we see the return of this type of plate racing in the very near future :)

  • @jrfan07 im hoping the new 2013 chassis will somehow fuck up the two car draft. let's hope we do get this kind of racing back.

  • I never appreciated the sound of the old car as much as I do now after listening to the steel boxes they use today for three years

  • I miss this type of restrictor plate racing not this two car tengo lovebug bullshit:(

  • this is the racing i miss, forget the two car hook up...

  • 2:58 watch Stewart all the way below the line.

  • @STP43FAN1

He got forced down though, that's legal

  • @bakinginheat9201 Yes, but the way NASCAR handles this rule the EIRI clause often trumps that.

  • DEI found out how to make aero changes in the transmission tunnel area in 2000-1 and that made their cars close to unpassable in most plate races. The rest of the field eventually figured this out and by 2005 DEI was toast on the plate tracks.

  • To also add: Although Michael's car had been wrongly geared by his team, it had a gear that was designed for someone to be leading. Look from 1:52 to 2:20 in the video. Look at the leads that Michael & Jr. were able to get on the field. Those two cars, especially Michael's (which had a larger lead than Jr.), were geared to lead. That's why Michael struggled in the pack during the race, but was very strong out front....

  • This has got to be Michael's most impressive win... His car had the wrong gear, which made him struggle in the pack. Despite that, he was able to get the lead late in the race and literally "block" the whole field. Great job by Michael.

  • This was Mikey's best season, he was up in the top 10 most of the year, he went to Bristol and won the Busch race and then in the Cup race he was wrecked by Rusty Wallace and either got caught up in wrecks or had mechanical trouble just about every race after that except this one and fell to 15th in the points. The 15 NAPA car will be back out there this Daytona however, It will be black as a tribute to Dale Earnhardt.

  • @djr1581 - exactly. everyone who seems to think michael cant drive don't seem to remember this season. he was at the top of his game all season long. he had a great crew chief and fast cars. I believe if he would have took his team and became technical partners with Hendrick Motorsports like Stewart did with his team stewart-hass. Michael would have been very competitive in the 55 and won some races.

  • @djr1581 Soooo true. He was great this year. Won the 500 (with the 2nd best car). Won this raced with a less than impressive car; it was a cow in the pack, Mikey just made something out of it. He also could have won the fall race at Loudon if it wasn't for the gasman late in the race. He just had the worst luck that anyone could have the last 1/3 of the year. Wrecking at Bristol with a top 10 car, top 5 cars at Atlanta (fall), Rockingham (fall) and Homestead only to blow tires and engines there.

  • @djr1581 And unfortunately that bad luck carried into 2004. He had a top 10 car at Daytona = wreck, top 10 car at Rockingham = bad transmission, top 15 car at Las Vegas = wrecked by Bill Elliot. He also had a flat tire at Darlington and got wrecked by Rusty Wallace at Pocono while running in the top 10 - 15. That terrible luck at the beginning of 2004 ruined Michael's chances at making the chase. Michael Waltrip is a great racecar driver. He just needs a good car and good luck.

  • battalionfan888 m.sn in profile

  • dude my dad was at this race and back at the hosue we where watching it to and well when the race wass till going on we called him and we asked him if he saw the flip and he sayed yeah

  • When racing was good...

  • The blocker : Michael Waltirp.

  • no more racing like this thanks brian france and COT

  • i still think if jr went with gordon in turn 3 on the last lap he could have won 5 in a row

  • one of the last truly great nascar races

  • just my opinion, but I say we need to get rid of the chase. The guys who know they wont make it don't try, and that leads to 20 exciting cars in a race instead of 43. then the chase comes along now only 12 cars are actually trying to do anything...

get rid of the chase so all the drivers will race...please....

P.S. do the cars still have those escape hatches? havent seen any of em......

  • im surprisd crashes after the start finish dont happen more often at talladega and daytona

  • 2nd place for Jr. , all good.

  • I wonder why the safety hatch never caught on. it seems like a good idea to me.

  • Love how Michael pops out of the roof hatch on his #15 NAPA Chevy after winning the EA Sports 500.

  • 1949-2003

    thre real era of nascar

  • Rusty wallace should have won at Talladega in the fall race of 2001. Because he never won at talladaga or Daytona. I hope he comes back and win at a super speedway. What do you y'all think about this? Jared out.

  • @jBennos I think you're a mook.

  • awesome finish

  • What was with Bobby Labonte being the first car the get wrecked in the big one? 2001 he gets flipped, and this one he gets turned into the field after the checkered flag.

  • 1979-2002 I think were the great day era

  • Jr. was good back then!!

I miss him in the 8. The first time I watch NASCAR (i wish i watched earlier) was in 2004, the Daytona 500. GOOD TIMES.

    p.s. screw Jimmie Johnson

  • man y does every1 screw with mark martin?

  • 'DEI won 9 of the last 12 restrictor plate races' Man, I miss that.

  • nascars best days... 1990-2004..

  • So true. 2004 was the last good year. But still it started getting shitty during the middle of 2004.

  • agreed

  • zOMG?!? NASCAR was exciting?

  • waltrip & jr were awesome teammates !!!!

  • hell yeah no better tag team they owned daytona and tally for a while jeff just beat people cause his cars were better jr and micheal worked as team

  • i will never understand why they took allen bestwick from the booth

  • I kinda think he's really annoying but he does a good job. Just don't like his voice.

  • What a way to finish the last Talladega race of the Winston Cup Era!!!!

  • go mikey

  • jeff gordon wouldve won it had walrip not blocked him

  • yeah he sure would have. He should have followed Michael back down but Gordon would've prolly taken out Kevin and a few other cars with him.

  • classic

  • Nascar was a lot better when it was still sponsored by Winston, and this finish shows it.

  • The last three years were great - 01-03. Despite Earnhardt Sr.'s death, there was great racing.

  • @flyer2359 I still call it Winston Cup sometimes. I miss these days.

  • did you see how damaged Jr.s car was at the finish? how did it get that way?

  • He could have used that roof hatch at California when he cought on fire and took a long time to get out because he is over 6' tall.

  • Those were the best 5 laps of Michael Waltrip's career!

  • jr won 5 times at talladega.

  • Comment removed

  • It's racing especially Talladega. I'm a big Gordon fan too, but it's racing. Waltrip made the right move to block Gordon to stop him and keep the win.

  • prime example of never say die! Who would've thought! Great race!

  • Is it me, or were the 5-wide for 5th at the finish line?

  • what a great finish

  • they broke talladega :,(..it just doesnt seem as....warm..and nascarish without the old cars and the concrete track

  • @mattbachman, safety is more important

than anything, that is why they have these

new cars. Plus, the new cars don't take as

much damage as the old cars do, and they

are more resistant and stick to the track for

less accidents, and the downforce straightens the cars

    out.

  • @Sportsgamer92 screw the new car it sucks!!! its looks like a box car. the splitter looks like a snow blow!!! the wing is gone finally. the old car was better racing nad so forth. earnhardt sr would rip nascar a new one for the crap of today car!!!

  • i feel the same way

  • i was at that race and it was amazing!

  • Go Ken Schrader!

  • This was a great race

  • Anyone know where I can find a photo of Mikey popping out of the roof hatch? I've been searching since 2003 for it but have not found one.

    Allen Bestwick..... the best.

  • Try CIA Stock Photo....Im sure they have it.....btw check out that site, have every cup race since 1998 awesome site

  • That darn Harvick. Had he stuck behind Gordon at the end, I think Jeff ends up winning this thing.

  • That was a great finish! Talladega gives a new meaning to "wild" all the time.

  • GREAT POST

  • Allen Bestwick is one of the best commentators ever only person maybe better is Mike Joy.

  • if only they could have alan, mike, darrell, and larry in some booth in fox

  • o c'mon webber is the best thing ever to happen..... lol j/k

  • I agree, mike joy, allen bestwick, and larry mac, would be a great team. but nobody can beat the mrn crew. i turn the sound off the tv and listen to the radio.

  • and Bill Webber isn't?

  • hands down, the best broadcast team for nascar was benny parsons, bob jenkins, and ned jarrett, period.

  • rusty wallace and jerry punch are so dam annoying... i wish BP was still around hes one hell of an announcer and person.. or just have fox do the majority of the races then TNT cuz fox is amazing and tnt is purdy good with kyle petty now

  • If it wasn't for Bill Webber I bet NBC would still be airing NASCAR races. TNT and ESPN Blow

  • I agree. Bring back Allen Bestwick!

  • ESPN's broadcasts of NASCAR dont blow.

    ESPN's broadcasts of NASCAR suck.

  • Let's clarify which ESPN broadcasts you're talking about. The ESPN broadcasts BEFORE 2000 were fucking awesome. Today they suck, because the announcers suck, and whoever that black dude is (not being racist, just can't remember his name) doesn't know NASCAR from his asshole, yet thinks his opinion is relevant 24/7.

I miss the ol' days. :(

  • and remind me why allen bestwick isnt commentating anymore? they'd rather have that mother's cock jerry punch.

ok, he isnt a mothers cock, but he has no business being a commentator.

  • i was at that race and it was incredible!

the fans went nuts when he came out the roof hatch. it was great.

  • Great call as usual at the end by AB.

  • they were 5 by 5 by 5 at the end

  • yeah the finishing order took a little while to load, lol

  • Escape hatch hehe Priceless :P

  • shut up princess unrealrat

  • Since when is there a hole in the roof

  • 2003, hasnt been mentioned since

  • now thats racing no gay green white cherkered

  • so if ther was an accident would you have rather this finish under caution?

  • i mean id rather them race back to the line then restarted green white checkered

  • i was there

  • Allen, Wally, and BP were a great team with great chemistry, and you could tell that they all liked each other. It's a shame they had to split that team up and put Weber in the booth.

  • this plate package was similar to the wicker bill in that it provided more drag and throttle response for the drivers

  • Yeah, I remember Jeff Burton saying in a practice interview that you couldn't loose the draft and could run half throttle because of the bigger spoiler and bigger restrictor plate...the same thing the wicker bill did but this package didn't allow for as much passing for the lead

  • TALLADEGA 4 LIFE

  • NBC was so underrated until they put Bill Weber in the booth. In fact, I'll say that they were superior to FOX. After all, NBC had Alan Bestwick and Benny Parsons. FOX had Mike Joy. While Joy is a great commentator, his commentary is more than offset by Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds, two men who have no business near a broadcast booth. Imagine if FOX was covering this race. Larry'd be screaming bloody murder.

  • yea he would be screaming about how people buy seats yet they dont use em.

and what is really sad now is, fox is the best we got *shudders*

Now after Dover since BP died and Bestwick got his ass kicked outta the booth we get to listen to the already annoying Bill Weber for 6 races then we get the always excited Jerry Punch with Andy and Rusty.

Im sorry but Bill, Jerry and Andy should have stayed on Pit road and Rusty needed to stay on the track.

BRING BACK BOB JENKINS AND ELI GOLD!!!!!!!!!!

  • Agreed. If BP wasn't dead, we'd have the best announcing from the revamped TNT. Kyle Petty is good. But he's NO match to Benny. TNT should have Allen back with Weber going back to pit road & Ned Jarrett as BP's replacement. If ESPN wants fans, they need to trash Punch, Andy & DJ & replace them with Bob Jenkins, Buddy Baker & Eli Gold, that way, ESPN will be improved. But for now, ESPN/ABC suck ass & will always be hated.

  • They need to let bob jenkens, ned jarrett, and ken squior announce at dega and daytona.

  • i wouldnt trash punch though, he made a good pit reported back in the day, would be neat to see allen bestwick in the booth again, hes a great anouncer:)

  • @timduncan21spursfan yeah i like to listen to a bunch of guys that know their Nascar stuff not a bunch of dicks who think they know everything about Nascar

  • @timduncan21spursfan your right Vince Welch is sooo freaking dumb

  • @timduncan21spursfan, I got an idea for ESPN/ABC: How about Allen Bestwick, Andy Petree and kyle Petty?

  • @talladegajunkie1439 Kyle Petty? FTW, Do you want to hear Incredible evrey ten seconds, Im ok with Dale Jarrett.

  • Yeah I miss NBC from those first 3 years. I wish Ken Squier or Ned Jarrett could save that train wreck of NBC and too bad Bob Jenkins couldnt go back to ESPN. Idk I use to like Fox but lately they just ramble and ramble

  • Mike Joy is great in the booth. Larry and DW are making it dry. (along with DW drinking the Kyle Busch Kool-aid doesn't help) The only good people that TNT has is Wally and Kyle Petty. (Bill Weber doesn't deserve to be mentioned) ESPN/ESPN on ABC has THE WORST COVERAGE. DJ is an improvement but not by much.

Allen Bestwick should be in the booth, but for some reason all the networks he has been with take him out after awhile. I agree with Joey and battalion.

  • R.I.P BP.

But how in the hell do you wreck after the Checkers? But that was a great race.

  • they wrecked in the 2000 winston 500 too...right after the flag...avery similar finish regarding the size of the pack

  • i miss bp

  • the late BP doing commentary.

  • WOW, that finish was almost as good as the 2001 AArons 499, at the very end!

  • Ha "there no help"...I love BP

  • *sigh* i miss NBC

Now we have the "opportunity" to "sail" to be "loose" with ESPN

  • NBC was great until they put Bill Webber at lead announcer and moved Allen Bestwick to pit road.

  • Agreed. Allen Bestwick is one of the best. Not exactly the next Benny Parsons, but hes good.

  • ive been looking for this for a while... do you have the interview too?

  • yes

  • I agree, Allen Bestwick is really good. Jerry Punch is decent as a pit reporter but as a broadcaster he seems kind of boring and repetitve.

  • I'd also like to see Kyle Petty stay in the booth. Rusty tries to hard to be funny. And maybe when DJ retires he can be in the booth

  • DJ will be just as good as his dad was

  • I'd like to see both Ned and Dale Jarret call a race.

  • Rusty's out...DJ's in for ESPN. Rusty will be with Brad (maybe)he's still with ESPN, but DJ will be the play-by-play guy instead of Rusty

  • DJ is good. Rusty tries to hard to be funny. Dr. Punch is average at best, and Andy Petree is great as play by play.

  • They already did at the lowes busch race last year

  • Yeah, i remeber that.

  • god jerry punch voice is sooooooo depressing too.

i remember watchin this race and i swear i nearly had a heart attack with all that racing haha, 1 of the greatest race i've seen

  • Yeah he is just "sailing" away. LOL.

This was the best racing at the plate tracks. NASCAR SHOULD, i repeat SHOULD go back to spoiler on the back of the car and put the wicker on the roof. Just keep the same plate on the cars and keep the same gear rule.

  • Mikey had to be a nervous wreck on that last lap but probably not crazy nervous Dale Jr had his back.

  • Mikey is a plate track vet. I don't think he was nervous at all. Don't forget he won the 500 twice.

  • Alan Bestwick is the best at commentary. Get Jerry Punch outta the booth.

  • yes yes mikey wins and he had the pole today and jeff won

  • THANK YOU CORK! I've been looking for this video for FOREVER!

  • gordon had a real shot to win

    DRIVE FOR 5

  • hell yeah he did it today

  • another classic race at Talladega. This race had an awesome finish and this was the last time Talladega had a good race and these were the good times.

  • my aunt and uncle from oregon were aat this race in the Tri-oval grand stands

  • The good ole days of DEI.

  • Damn what a charge in the last few laps for the 20 car

  • i've been waiting for this for a long time, thank you

  • Bring Allen Bestwick back to play by play imo

  • i agree and great vid

  • 1st comment that was an awsome race.

  • damn the 20 and 29 came from wayy back to get into the top 5 on the last lap, if tony or kevin had a couple more laps who knows, what would have happened, i agree this was the last good race at dega besides the 04 spring race.

  • Actually i thought that the 04' fall race was great.
