The rules today are softer then they were back then. Jordan averaged over 30 pts a game for 7 straight season while taken a beating when driving to the paint! Today you can't look at a player wrong without getting a foul. Sure there's more talent in the game now days since international players have a greater presence in the NBA but the 80s & 90s had to GREATEST PLAYERS EVER to grace the court.
