I think it is an awful movie! Its message is not that good and this is a good movie for people who think they are very smart and actually aren't because they make a big theory around the movie and feel smart... nothing more! I don't even consider this a movie, there should be another name for this crap!
@SickShortMovies if you don't you are either gay or blind! And you think you are smart cos you like this movie? pff... As i said, it's a movie where u can make up a big theory of how you see it but has no actual content. if you do think so, u must be a person with no knowledge of anything and after seeing this movie ur like "i'm so smart" and ur not.
@rubensgaspar Sorry i'm not attracted to plastic. I don't think i'm smart because I like this movie, I like this movie because it has beautiful cinematography. Sorry, for the big words, I know your tiny brain can't handle them much. Also but trying to use gay as insult proves how incompetent and prejudice you are. And how the fuck do I like Glee you dumbass? By God, you are a ugly grown ass man that has the grammar of a 7 year old. Get a Job, and be a man!
@SickShortMovies the cinematography doesn't make a movie. It has great performances and great cinematography. but i value the story a lot more. i gave it 6/10 on imdb. using sean penn's words, a stronger narrative would have made this movie better. By the way, i can speak 4 different languages, how many can you speak? since you are so smart to criticize. for a person who is so smart saying "gay as an insult proves how incompetent" do you know what incompetent means? Nice comeback (lool)!
@rubensgaspar I speak French, Japanese, Chinese, Gaelic, and Italian. I mess up one sentence, you mess up entire paragraphs, big difference my friend. I never said this movie was amazing or should get 5 stars but it's better then most movies today. I know what incompetent means. You are not able to learn proper grammar and sentence structure aka you are incompetent to learning English Grammar. You listen to LMFAO so your taste in fine arts are therefore invalid. No one gives a shit about you.
@SickShortMovies knowing how to say "hello" isn't speaking a language ;). Also LMFAO is cool, if u don't like it u must be one of those nerds who say they don't like disco music cos you have no friends to go there with!
One sentence? u didn't understand what you did and ur calling me stupid, loool.
Also, called me ugly but u must be so ugly u have to put cat pictures instead of ur own. have a nice life loser!
ur not really worth wasting time on so i won't reply again. cry all you want now!
@rubensgaspar Vas te faire encule idiot, sei un ritardo. a fháil ar an ifreann uaire de youtube, píosa tú de cac.これは4つの言語、女のためにどうですか? 在你的脂肪他媽的臉! Who the hell listens to Disco music in 2012? Creepy ass perverts such as yourself.. LMFAO are a bunch of fat, grown ass man that don't know a thing about music. I'm not a freaking idiot like you because I'd like to protect my identity. BTW, hope you like your face being all over the Internet!
Um.. For anyone who did not understand this movie.. here you go.. There are two ways of life.. The way of Nature and the way of Grace. Brad plays the Role of "Nature" he is a stern father who prepares his boys for life. While the mother playing the role of "Grace" I find this movie a very beautiful piece of art because their is nothing really quite like it. This movie deals with the death and how to move on and try to enjoy life and every passing moment.
Preachy. It tries to be a great movie, so automatically it's going to irritate most people. It begs or demands your indulgence and then some. I just watched it again, to get my head straight for this review. Sean Penn is mandatory reading about this movie. Malick is no Kubrick - cosmic visuals and great soundtrack similar to 2001 A Space Odyssey BUT Kubrick takes you Out There only after building up 3 separate yet linked coherent narratives. Malick starts out presuming he's got you onside.
I think this a movie that is better appreciated when watching it a second time. Personally, I think it is a masterpiece and spectacular work of art. But it isn't for everyone.
@moonkissed45 I agree. I wasn't very enthusiastic about it the first time I saw it but after watching it again recently, I found it to be one of the best films of the year. Definitely going on my top 10 of 2011.
Terrence Malick is a very inspiring filmmaker! His influence can be seen in my most recent project, a no-budget "art"/horror short film. the trailer for which can be found on my channel.
Why does Beyond the Trailer think we really care how many awards or how much money a movie makes? Seriously. Half of that whole introduction was pointless.
I couldn't even stand to finish the trailer let alone the entire movie but somehow I sat through it. The people she is interviewing are the same kind of people that were in the theater, people who had no idea what they were watching but were too embarrassed to admit it so they just make up some bullshit about how the movie didn't have a meaning.
Saw the film on fillmsi.co.cc and give it a 5/5 although i think the directors cut in the dvd would probably be better than the theatrical cut considering the amount of scenes he had to cut to get a pg 13 rating.
This is actually a really great film, i noted critics were saying it made no sense and that this was an anti-feminist film, um, of course it made sense! I saw it on fillmsi.co.cc today.
I just saw this at fillmsi.co.cc. OMG BEST FUCKIN film EVER. The effects were intense this is like amazing. amazing, its absolutely blow my mind, well done everyboy who work on this film. realy great job- :D:D:D:D:D:D
This movie is a joke! Bach is an art, the cosmos are art, the life is art. This movie is not an art. The best movie I saw these year was Black Swan definitively, fragile but strong, very sensitive, that was art, there I saw life, human life, not tree of life.
After having watched this film, I seriously think it was practical joke by the director, to see how far movie critics would go to interpret meaning into something that was merely beautifully shot, but had no intended meaning. Critics talk about how this is about God, and there is a quote in the beginning of the film from Job. I think the director tried to play it off as if it is this grand meditation on the problem of evil, but honestly it is just pretentious in its lack of a focused narrative.
Open letter to Grace R.--is it me or you only got to interview white people for this movie. i notice that when you do an action or horror movie review you seem to get to all the minorities for a interview. what is going on grace? i like your little show but its troubling that you only got 3 white dudes for a interview for this. What happen to your black regulars on your show that could seen this movie. i just hate that stereotype that minorities dont see these kind of movies. PS nice boobs
@wilk1978 but she does have her regulars that are black who come to the show and do interviews. this is so typical of white interviewers who do this kind of interviewing...you should be asking to grace not to me dumb ass what happen to the non whites on this show.
Just saw the Tree of Life and all I can say is that people that say this film is boring are just ignorant, it's not a boring film. People will only find it boring for starters, if you don't even pay attention to the movie. Two people sitting right next to me, PAID NO ATTENTION to what was "ACTUALLY" happening in the film, talking...a few minutes later they left the cinema...these are the people that will say the film was boring. Couldn't put in the effort to immerse themselves and "think".
can we just set something straight here please: the movie that i watched that looped about five minutes of video over and over for two hours. . . .and then rolled the credits, is that the same shit that everyone here watched!?! cos MAN!
saying this was a masterpiece is the same as saying a canvas on which someone just splashed paint all over is priceless and hence the cost is in the millions.
OF COURSE IT'S PRICELESS, FUCK! IT ISN'T WORTH SHIT!
you mean the movie was so boring it made you about how boring and depressing your life is and that after so many years of not going to the cinema you went just this once and ran into the worst most epic failure of a movie this world would ever see?
this is the most bullshit array of clips and music compilation (cos it's definitely not a movie) i will ever see in my life, after enduring the first ten minutes of this shit, i skipped through till the end and thought "wtf!!!"
@Hexagram777 Yes, the people like myself weeping during the movie were doing it just to appear cool. Can't you just accept that this movie really touched some of us but that it simply didn't do it for you?
I think Brad Pitt SHOULD win an Oscar but that's not saying he will. I truly thought he was his character, I never thought for one bit that he was Brad Pitt. Great movie also, and don't walk out, there isn't necessarily an explanation as much as there is a clarification.
I am going to see this next week. I don't know what to expect, this review worries me lol. I have only seen Malicks other film Days of Heaven, which I was a little mixed about.
Movies like this are most likely not going to attract a large audience because they are too busy throwing their money at Hangover regurgitation films. Movies like this have substance and it wont waste time trying to make a set story because, as mentioned, the director focuses on detail, which, to me at least, is one of the most important things a director does. The story is life and life is formless, I can see this movie getting a few awards. Ramble complete.
That was probably your most intelligent group of interviewees I've seen. They really seemed to understand what it was, and not just complain for the lack of story or action. I have to say, I really respect this bunch.
@MugginReviews This movie was trash, I walked out. I wasn't the only one either. 9 others walked out before me. The music was great, but the movie was trash. I hate when people try to pass off complete garbage as art. Jackson Pollock is garbage, retro clothing is garbage, 70's furniture is garbage and this film was garbage. Go see Incendies if you want to see a really good non mainstream movie.
@MugginReviews The people who complain or expecting this to be just another film must have walked out. There are a lot of walk outs in the theater when I watched this.
More viewers, more backpacks, that must be an East Coast thing. Now that I think about it, perhaps it's because more people walk or ride bikes in New York...
@theylied1776 'it's only entertainment'... film is an art form, some make film for more than just money or to create a lot of explosions to 'wow' people. Some make film to express some meaning, emotion and depth. 'The Tree of Life' is art, "Transformers' is entertainment.
2nd. "Film" is a business first... and an Art Form second, because otherwise there would be no need to sell tickets. don't fool yourself into thinking that if there were a project that a Director "really believed in" that He or She would do it for Free.
When it comes to movies/films, there is no "art for the sake of art", it's only entertainment. Bread and Circuses.
@theylied1776 ..what are you talking about? Many directors have in fact done it for free, the director of Blue Valentine gave up his directors fee to help fund the film. Not everyone is out to make money, many/most independent films barely make back their budgets. The directors/writers/producers of those films are doing it because they have a story to tell or something to express. 'TOL' is a very personal film, he cared about money he wouldn't make such 'artful' films that don't make much.
@LeonTh3Duke "Yes and No". a lot of directors give up their Front End Fee for what are called "Points", money that a director can make after the movie is released if it reaches a certain profit margin.
Like I wrote before, no director works for Free for the sake of art. it's a business first. if you really think that David Lynch didn't get paid for Blue Velvet... then you are truly naive.
@theylied1776 Did I say Blue Velvet...no, I did not. Of course directors want their films/themselves to make money...so that they can make more films. For many it is not business first. They don't set out to write scripts to make money, they have a story first and want to tell it, then of course they need money to make it, but directors like Malick who make such personal films that dont make much do not say "I want to make this to make money", they do it to tell the story, money comes second.
@LeonTh3Duke My incorrect movie title aside, I made my point. you can't show me one director that showcases his craft for Free... for the sake of art. when was the last time that a new film was released that they didn't charge admission for... just to tell a story?
It's a business First, that's why Malick has only made 5 films in 38 years, he's a bad investment. the only reason why Brad Pitt was the Executive Producer (secured funds for the entire production) is because he's chasing an Oscar.
@theylied1776 Once again, with your comment on Malick's career, you prove to not know very much about the director or many others so any further arguments are pointless. You might want to get your facts straight next time.
@LeonTh3Duke My comment was indirectly about Malick, and directly about the film industry being a business first. I can see how the context escaped you.
@theylied1776 Your facts are not correct actually, do yourself a favor and use google for a second, look up any article about Malick and know why you are dead wrong about his career, which just shows you generalize about all film makers. As for admission prices, films cost money to be made, film makers usually borrow that money, and the studio's charges admission to get that money back. Film is a business for studios, not film makers, they do it for art, studios do it for money, big difference.
@theylied1776 yes,and your logic isn't clearly based off of massive assumptions and little to no actual knowledge of the motivations of most many directors, who went to school and dedicated their lives to making film because they love it and not because they make money from it.As I said, for the studio its a business, for the filmmaker who we are talking about, it is an art, they do it because of their passions for it, read up a bit of watch a few interviews then get back to me.stop generalizing
@LeonTh3Duke Logic is useless when trying to assume what motivates a director, no mater how familiar you are with their art; like most people they evolve. this is why I've only made comments directed at the Film industry as a whole. again,it's about context.
Like in any business, some people know how to play the game, and others only make 5 films in 38years.
Passion gets you in the door, but profitability gives you the freedom to make what you want. just ask Spielberg or Tarantino.
@LeonTh3Duke By the way, neither one ever went to college or film school. they just had a passion for the art and an understanding of the film business.
Absolutely beautiful journey through the memories of a man filled with regret and grief looking for answers to the universe's toughest questions and reconciliation. Seeing the evolution of the child as he looks for a balance between grace and nature is an emotional and spiritual challenge. Malick is a poet, and 'The Tree of Life' is truly poetry in motion.
Should have won best picture.

More viewers, more backpacks, that must be an East Coast thing. Now that I think about it, perhaps it's because more people walk or ride bikes in New York...

The French, they applauded and booed a movie, I mean a "Film"! I've never been that invested in a "movie". it's only entertainment.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@theylied1776 'it's only entertainment'... film is an art form, some make film for more than just money or to create a lot of explosions to 'wow' people. Some make film to express some meaning, emotion and depth. 'The Tree of Life' is art, "Transformers' is entertainment.
LeonTh3Duke 8 months ago 4
@LeonTh3Duke
1st. "Transformers" is crap.
Bread and Circuses.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@theylied1776 ..what are you talking about? Many directors have in fact done it for free, the director of Blue Valentine gave up his directors fee to help fund the film. Not everyone is out to make money, many/most independent films barely make back their budgets. The directors/writers/producers of those films are doing it because they have a story to tell or something to express. 'TOL' is a very personal film, he cared about money he wouldn't make such 'artful' films that don't make much.
LeonTh3Duke 8 months ago
@LeonTh3Duke "Yes and No". a lot of directors give up their Front End Fee for what are called "Points", money that a director can make after the movie is released if it reaches a certain profit margin.
Like I wrote before, no director works for Free for the sake of art. it's a business first. if you really think that David Lynch didn't get paid for Blue Velvet... then you are truly naive.
I mean that in the nicest possible way.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@theylied1776 Did I say Blue Velvet...no, I did not. Of course directors want their films/themselves to make money...so that they can make more films. For many it is not business first. They don't set out to write scripts to make money, they have a story first and want to tell it, then of course they need money to make it, but directors like Malick who make such personal films that dont make much do not say "I want to make this to make money", they do it to tell the story, money comes second.
LeonTh3Duke 8 months ago
@LeonTh3Duke My incorrect movie title aside, I made my point. you can't show me one director that showcases his craft for Free... for the sake of art. when was the last time that a new film was released that they didn't charge admission for... just to tell a story?
It's a business First, that's why Malick has only made 5 films in 38 years, he's a bad investment. the only reason why Brad Pitt was the Executive Producer (secured funds for the entire production) is because he's chasing an Oscar.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@theylied1776 Once again, with your comment on Malick's career, you prove to not know very much about the director or many others so any further arguments are pointless. You might want to get your facts straight next time.
LeonTh3Duke 8 months ago
@LeonTh3Duke My comment was indirectly about Malick, and directly about the film industry being a business first. I can see how the context escaped you.
My facts are correct, that's what upsets you.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@theylied1776 Your facts are not correct actually, do yourself a favor and use google for a second, look up any article about Malick and know why you are dead wrong about his career, which just shows you generalize about all film makers. As for admission prices, films cost money to be made, film makers usually borrow that money, and the studio's charges admission to get that money back. Film is a business for studios, not film makers, they do it for art, studios do it for money, big difference.
LeonTh3Duke 8 months ago
@LeonTh3Duke
1st. 5 films in 38years, that's pretty self explanatory. that fun fact came from this video.
2nd. Your comment about admission prices just adds to my argument about 'Film" being a Business First and an art form second.
3rd. The Studios don't set admission prices for theaters, they can negotiate their percentage, but that's up to the Theater Owners Association.
Your argument is based in Passion for the art and not Logic.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@theylied1776 yes,and your logic isn't clearly based off of massive assumptions and little to no actual knowledge of the motivations of most many directors, who went to school and dedicated their lives to making film because they love it and not because they make money from it.As I said, for the studio its a business, for the filmmaker who we are talking about, it is an art, they do it because of their passions for it, read up a bit of watch a few interviews then get back to me.stop generalizing
LeonTh3Duke 8 months ago
@LeonTh3Duke Logic is useless when trying to assume what motivates a director, no mater how familiar you are with their art; like most people they evolve. this is why I've only made comments directed at the Film industry as a whole. again,it's about context.
Like in any business, some people know how to play the game, and others only make 5 films in 38years.
Passion gets you in the door, but profitability gives you the freedom to make what you want. just ask Spielberg or Tarantino.
theylied1776 8 months ago
@LeonTh3Duke By the way, neither one ever went to college or film school. they just had a passion for the art and an understanding of the film business.

Absolutely beautiful journey through the memories of a man filled with regret and grief looking for answers to the universe's toughest questions and reconciliation. Seeing the evolution of the child as he looks for a balance between grace and nature is an emotional and spiritual challenge. Malick is a poet, and 'The Tree of Life' is truly poetry in motion.
