Quick Ukulele Review: Mainland Ukuleles Mahogany Soprano

Nice Alan. Hey, if you ever get a chance, I would love to hear that Mainland compared (sound sample) to your Flea. I don't think you had the soprano when you did your soprano comparison before.

whats your favorite ukelele size, mine is the soprano because of its old 50s waikiki sound to it, like how you played it their

I like to switch uke sizes depending on the song. I don't think I have a favorite but I do have many more sopranos than all other sizes combined. That may because they're less expensive to buy, too.

I have the red cedar concert from Mainland and it's a gem. I recommend it.

@heresl00kingatyoukid Depends on the kind of sound you prefer. Red cedar and rings is brighter and mango is mellow and full. I prefer mango myself.

would you say mainland or bushmans are better?

I haven't played a Bushman for a long time. I own a concert Jenny for a long time and it seemed fine. I've heard that a lot of people had to wait for their Bushmans and they weren't "set up" well. I know the Mainland owner and he's good to deal with. I think the Mainlands are prettier with the special binding.

i just got one today...there awesome im just curious what kind of strings are they strung with?

Aquila nylgut. I have all 3 sizes and like the Aquila on the soprano and concert but not on the tenor. Sounds "plunky" to me.

Nice uke - and well played! :-) I've been thinking of getting one of these... Do you feel the matte finish affected the sound at all, perhaps made it mellower than the gloss finsh?

I don't know about that. And I don't know who has a gloss finished one. Maybe hoosierhiver (mainland's owner) could send you a comparison video.

How is the string height at the nut and at the 12th fret? While we're at it, are the notes fretted at the 12th fret close to the 12th fret harmonic?

Looks mighty nice, Alan! I can't decide which one to get though... glossy cedar or matte mahogany. I know I like the mellow sound of mahogany, but the cedar is so damn pretty...
