  • Thankyou for posting that video clip. Maynard was a great supporter of music education.

As shown in this clip letting the trumpets all have a chance at the stage. And even a fluegelhorn.

  • @esedrew77---I got it on Ebay. I just typed in "Maynard Ferguson--- Live---At the Top". Its from the Plaza Hotel in Rochester, New York--taped live in 1975. I was just lucky to find it. FYI--I just looked it up a minute ago and there was a listing for this on Ebay. Good Luck !!!

  • Got this concert on DVD. Its great.

  • @01GOATBOY01 ...what is the title for the DVD. I've been looking for it for decades!!!

  • Lynn Nicholson and MF holy moly

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Maynard a few times in the 90's. He was such an inspiration.

I miss you Maynard. I was so sad when I heard you died.

  • Love the way the piano player breaks into the Ohio Players "Skin Tight" bassline at 5:57 classic!

  • To pick up a cold horn and nail that bit at 2:54, dang.....

  • bestia-bestia

  • bestia

  • does anyone know the bass players name???????

  • @bigtuna1905 Probably Rick Petrone

  • The high B's High A's and High C's dont sound that high at all at 0:35 ... but then when i play this Its higher than pot heads get o.O

  • Who the hell was that???????????

  • I would have given anything to play with Maynard. I never saw anyone express such delight over the accomplishments of his young players.

  • Joy at 2:07

  • Always loved that band. Lynn, Hahn, Petrone, etc, outstanding.

  • This guy just butchered the original...REALLY BADLY. I would've been more impressed if he would've just played the ACTUAL song.

  • @LoHAtrox no

  • two people were eaten by a T-Rex

  • 2:38 impressive.. who is this guy? i wanna know!!!

  • @chrism4n14 LYNN NICHOLSON

  • The audience savoring every note of the trumpet's solos.

  • Hey , Why have the La Fiesta vida of the same era been taken off ?

  • @johnnyrocket999 i totally agree! i was looking for them today and couldn't find them! those were some great vids and i hope they get put back up

  • @johnnyrocket999 I'd like to know this too. La Fiesta, Gospel John and some others from Live at the Top. Please upload them!

  • I love the way the audience was listening to the solos and grooving with them. Check out the chick at 7:45. Days are gone.

  • Wore this one out too! I thought Randy Purcell's trombone solo in the "B" section was gorgeous and cemented the sound I wanted as a player. Did I get it? No, but that's my fault! =)

  • Don Hans on Flugel ... some great licks

  • @Arborwaychet Best chord transition in a solo from an MF band member. Really enjoyed this solo.

  • 2:43 did maynard just slap the guy's butt? o_o

  • @somebodyfarted123 Hi sname is Lynn Nicholson, and yes he did.

  • Whos the one person who disliked this -.-.

  • what would have happened if Maynard had dropped his trumpet at 8:13???

    anybody else catch that?

  • @chachi610 Yes and he did "catch it' lol

  • @chachi610 He would have bought a new one with his ridiculous pile of money.

  • Gotta love Don Hanz's solo. Nothing more tasteful than that.

  • A great performance but I have to say I do not miss the Fender Rhodes pianos. Then and now they sounded like garbage.

  • If I am not mistaken, this must be sometime around 1970-72.

  • Our jazz ensemble in college got to have Maynard as our guest artist a year before he died.. I felt so honored to get a lesson from him, and get his autograph on a harmon mute... Miss ya Big M... you still motivate me to this day to keep kickin ass teaching and playing. My dad passed away last year, and loved Maynard, but we both loved how nice he was.

  • To me, the very best version of this is on MF 5 "Live at Jimmy's". The sax solo is good and of course the trumpet kicks ass!!! Actually I mean trumpets as in multiple. I'm so thankful I've got all this great music on an ipod cuz my vinyl is so worn from hour after hour of listening.

  • love the trombones

  • lynn nichlson is so frickin skinny! but he's so awesome

  • go bari sax!

  • This is just off tap. These musos are beyond. Alan Zavod - what a great solo on the keys gotta love that - more than 30 years later he's still amazing.

  • thank you, 1nessism.. gotta go..

  • @Prettyflowerchild glad ya dig it... really... obliqueness will not fly... be good to you... follow softest options... # remains the same... .

  • @1nessism then why someone block my site from you>> that seems reallly oblique to me.. such drama, just like the feeling in this vid, lol.. wow !!

  • The high register that he plays in is amazing! I was fortunate to see MF in concert in or about 1977 in Coldwater MI.

    Great stuff (RIP MF).

  • I should probably share the funny story about Lynn Nicholson. Near the end of the show, they always played "Hey Jude" and the trumpet section would come out into the audience. Well Lynn Nicholson was about six feet behind me. My ears were ringing for about 10 minutes afterward!

  • maynard seriously looked like he was gonna pass out near the end... damn lol

  • Maynard's like "where the hell did the trumpets get all the percussion instruments?" haha

  • Maynard throws his horn in the air! 8:15

  • i love the trombone's higher register, it sounds so bouncy and energetic. lovin the flugel solo in the middle.

  • I'm so glad to see him 2 times. Maynard is amazing and will be missed. Thx for the video.

  • lynn = awesome

  • silverST307 this night.Going to get me one!

  • Rick Petrone on bass. OMG, the best!

  • I am so lucky that Maynard came to WVU in the late 70s while I was a student there. That is easily the best concert I have ever heard.

  • @toomuchespresso He often came to the Binghamton, NY area to play. I saw him often. Someone suggested his sister lived in the area. Anyway, it's not far from NYC.

  • I wonder what mouthpiece Maynard is using here. It's not the one he normally uses It looks more like a Warburton.

  • It's a jet-tone

  • It doesn't matter.

  • i wanna play this song so bad in jazz band

  • nice, nice, nice. Lynn Nicholson is a beast. Great vid bro.

  • @ULOOOOZER AND he's a nice guy! I found his email on the web so I wrote him to tell him of a funny experience when I saw him in St. Louis. He actually wrote back! We've been writing back and forth ever since.

  • @ULOOOOZER He's STILL a beast on the trumpet, but a VERY nice guy! I found his email on the web and told him about the time he blew my ears out in St. Louis. He actually wrote me back! We write each other back and forth. He's played with Buddy Rich and Louis Belson. VERY interesting guy.

  • @i002492 Too cool man. Great story. Always great to hear when these guys are still around doin' their thing and approachable like that. He blew his horn soooo clear! (And sounds to me like he still does!)

  • @ULOOOOZER He is unbelievably cool. I can't play the trumpet, but I can scream on the trumpet. He encouraged me to go ahead and upload a shot at C above High C to YouTube. I sent the link to him and he actually took the time to correct my error in the video and send me an email back! As you may imagine, I added his comments to the text!
