@abcRebel do you think smell doesn't work underwater? Its just a thicker fluid than air (which is also technically a fluid). Of course for seals, since they are air breathers thats not the case, he was using his whiskers to decide what the hand was, because they use their whiskers to determine if the wake of an object indicates whether it would be a good meal, i guess he decided the hand wouldnt be so didnt bother biting it :)

Unlike seals, claws on their front flippers are not that distinct, and are not covered by fur. hind flippers resemble the curved profile of scuba divers shoes and can rotate to enable them to walk. Sea lions have ear flaps while seals have ear holes and swim using their front flippers. Seals uses the hind flippers for power and only front flippers for steering. I do believe seals have shorter muzzles too
