Duh! Orr's career was tragically cut short by horrific knee injuries. He was also a defenseman who's primary job was preventing goals. His career +/- stats dwarf those of Gretzky. Gretzky, by the way, had a +/- BELOW ZERO SEVEN TIMES in his career. Despite his points, he was on the ice for more goals against than for. What's so great about that? Call Gretzky the greatest one-way player in history, but as a complete player, he's behind Orr and Howe. They played both ends of the rink.

What good is it averaging 150 points if the other team outscores your team when you're on the ice? Orr may have "only" averaged 100 points, but the Bruins were rarely scored against when he was out there. Orr more than made up for the point difference by taking guys out, blocking shots and breaking up plays in his own end. Gretzky was incapable of doing any of that. Orr's defensive contribution was enormous. Gretzky's was non-existant.

But he didn't apply himself defensively, which is half the game. He scored 130 points and was still a -25. That's terrible. How many goals did the other team score when Gretzky was on the ice? He was nowhere near the all round player Orr was. I'll say it again: He was the best one-way player in history.

Let's see: Orr won 8 straight Norris trophies while winning 2 scoring titles (the seasons he didn't win he was 2nd to teammate Esposito.) He was the greatest powerplay quarterback of all time, as well as being the best penalty killer I've ever seen. Most of his offense began with plays he broke up in his own end. He hit, fought and blocked shots while being the game's best offensive player. His +/- stats are far ahead of any other player, ever. I'd say that's an "all round" player.

You obviously base everything off of +/- ratings which isn't everything! That doesn't solely determine how good you are. They base +/- by past seasons. So if expectations are high then it is harder to get good ratings. Now if you have one really good season your good ratings go up. In the world of hockey the best player is based on goals, points, and assists. Not by +/-. I think many people are jealous because of Gretzky's talent. And hey who couldn't be?
