Bradley is like Josh Smith in the way the art world needs at least a couple garbage-generator artists to demonstrate it's "just 'cause we can" status. As long as the hoi polloi hates it, it must be good.
@eenkjet-the idea that if an object doesn't intentionally seek to push the history of art then it must be entirely disregarded is a naive statement in my opinion. art can definitely be regarded as a means to communicate on a non-verbal level and be successful in pushing or expanding our awareness of the human condition without being concerned about how it fits into the history of art which has been controlled and highjacked by art historians who have little idea of the maker's perspective..
DEar James Kalm, Thanks for covering these exhibitions. I am not in NY and don't go to New York openings anymore so it's a real treat for me to see this work. Drop cloths didn't start with Joe Bradley neither have the impish attempts at New York Painting excellence.. What about Gary Komarin? Hummm! What about David Bowie hummmm! " Rugged authenticity and uncontrolled grunginess" are indeed appropos. Not against the grain enough for NY Painting.
first video -paintings are visceral, earthy, blunt, potent souvenirs/mementos of the studio... material of paint and other things and the color and the shape construction all add up....nice to see. enjoy the music beginnings too.
I suspect this is another example of New York charlatanism. I love how these "art lovers" never seem to be all that interested in the paintings. They're body language says it all: backs to the wall, briefly glancing at the "art" from time to time when they aren't too busy chatting with their in-group peers. But maybe that's the point.
this work is crap. whether it's crap on purpose, thus counter intuitively making it "good" makes no difference. these pieces were not the work of at artist pushing himself or the history of art. waste of time and paint. put those drop cloths back to work.

kind of a poor man's baquiat/baechler hybrid..tho not as elegant ...but they might look good in a giant loft or corporate lobby...
