These things have a blind spot, if you attack from behind and slightly bellow it the rear gunner can't hit you cos his own tail is in the way, and the belly gunner can't see you unless you get right under them.
@skintrade In these days it wasn't that important. The planes flew really slow.
The fighter-planes who attemted to shoot down one of the "big" bombers were built of wood covered with cloth and parts made of aluminium (like the Bombers). It was a horrible hard job to do. There was no way to hide from the bullets or to be protected. The bomber crew had enough time to aim and shoot. One bad nightmare for both sides.
The planes also had little range to operate because of few fuel.
They did just that on the successor the Handley Page V/1500. Also called "the Berlin bomber". They were about to bomb the German capital just when news came of the armistice in November 1918. Had the war gone on for one more day...
The engines were armor plated, not sure but I beleive the crew sat in armor plated stations as well, hence they be buggers to shoot down, try to get head on and hit the pilot.

How come it had two guns in front,one in back...wouldnt it make more sense to have more rearward firepower
