That the piece remains aloof from indulgence of any sort and lacks virtually all connection to the harmonic past leaves it open to the accusation of heartlessness, perhaps understandable in an African American composer but not, to my mind, lovable.
A piece of great integrity and originality that musically sets forth the random pursuit and catch that characterizes most life. I prefer the second movement to the first because it preserves a better connection with traditional harmonies and rhythms, but not so much that one is ever comforted or satisfied.
